So, I've been thinking.

For a few years now I've been working for a fireworks company whenever needed doing fireworks displays... No surprises, I love fire and making things go bang, always have done!

Anyway, I was wondering, as I'm fairly new to poi etc, if anyone's ever seen any fireworks displays done in tandem with fire poi, as in part of a show etc?

Obviously the golden rules of fireworks (heat/shock/friction) would dictate you stay the hell away from fireworks with things on fire, but it could be an interesting display with some dancers...!!

A few people have blended the two beautifully - Burn Crew Concept over in Paris do lovely things with fireworks and staffs - they've got some ace videos too.

Yep, pyrotechnics with staff is fairly well established, though it needs someone skill and often a pyro licence to do it. Here's an example with Kyle McLean spinning pyro at the Gold Coast casino (towards the end of the show)

Well, I'm still learning (as with anything dangerous i guess - complacency is a bad thing!).

It started a few years ago with a friend of mine asking me if i'd like to help him out with a display. it got me hooked first time to be honest, and there's nothing like the feeling of an 8" mortar going off a few feet away from you. even from 50 yards you still feel the punch in your chest!

I'm basically his apprentice, so it's all supervised, but i do a hell of a lot, from rigging up the fireworks to lighting them on show night too. Obviously, a lot of experience (many years and lots of shows!) has to be undergone before you can solely fire your own show, but it's so much fun. the element of danger is exciting, but so is the finished product! mind you, you don't spend much time looking upwards wink

This is a link to our show pics for Guy Fawk's Night 2006 smile

So you're working towards a pyro license? Good on you. Here in Australia it is very strictly regulated and currently incredibly difficult to get a new one due to stuff ups in defining the standards for certification.
If you don't and you're playing with pyro you're... ummm. playing with fire wink

So is it true that you can tell how expensive a firework display is by the number of blue ones?

Yeah, that's right. They're a lot more expensive than the others wink

That was I'd say about 70% of a £650 show. Normally we fire a £2,000 show for firework's night (guy fawk's, whatever you wanna call it) which takes a HELL of a lot more prep and much bigger fireworks!

That looks amazing!

I want to go over to Southport in England sometime for the UK fireworks championships - that's supposed to be an amazing night too. Also, Malta's supposed to be amazing - the Maltese make some mental fireworks too!!

I've spun with Fireworks, and it was fun. The only downside is they were cheap English ones so it didn't look particularly good. Need to get some of the decent French ones!

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

For anyone down this neck of the woods, there's a Fireworks company here in Christchurch that HoP has an association with. They run different pyrotechnics training and a new one introduced is a Pyrotechnics for Performers. Part of it splits into the specific type of performance desired.
If anyone is interested, PM or e-mail me for more details.

* thinks, with Circo Arts, the Fireworks company, and HoP all in close proximity to each other, why don't we have more HoPpers here?!! biggrin * *thinks - will have to do something about that!*
