ok, so some of us were having a conversation a few threads over the rainbow and the question got asked and it was suggested it should become a thread on it's own. So here you go...

The question everyone's dying to know the answer to - "if you were a nut, what kind of nut would you be?"

If I was a nut I think I'd be a coconut - big and hairy on the outside and a full meal on the inside!!! (and the shells are useful for all sorts of things too).

What kind of nut are you? ubbrollsmile

I have several large jars of the stuff. I actually like it... a little. And don't tell anyone I admitted to it.

Well duhhhh.. my name is Hazel.

A few weeks ago- when I was new at work, one guy kept forgetting my name- I told him, 'just think of the nut', next day, he looks at me, looks confused and says, 'Umm.. Coco..?'

THE MEEK WILL INHERIT THE EARTH!

If that's okay with you?

a peanut is not a nut!

Correct, but only in the botanical sense. Although if you want to go down that road then the following aren't nuts either:
Almond is the edible seed of a drupe — the leathery "flesh" is removed at harvest.
Brazil nut is the seed from a capsule.
Candlenut (used for oil) is a seed.
Cashew nut is a seed.
Coconut is a dry, fibrous drupe.
Horse-chestnut is an inedible capsule.
Macadamia nut is a creamy white kernel (Macadamia integrifolia).
Mongongo
Peanut is a legume and a seed.
Pine nut is the seed of several species of pine (coniferous trees).
Pistachio nut is the seed of a thin-shelled drupe.

[source:Wikipedia]

But they are all nuts in the culinary sense. As for fruits vs. vegetables in the botanical vs. culinary sense... well, that could be a whole new thread.

I'm probably a wing nut (goes back to Flight Sim. X)

Ok, since you asked so nicely:

A nut is a hard-shelled, indehiscent (i.e. doesn't open at maturity), one-loculated, one-seeded (rarely 2-seeded) fruit. Some examples of true nuts are acorns, walnuts, pecans, chestnuts and hazelnuts. There is still some debate over cashews though, technically they are a drupe but some botanists prefer to call them a drupacious nut rolleyes Cashews are interesting for other reasons, especially the way the pedicel expands into a false apple-like fruit and that the "shell" of the drupe/drupacious nut contains urushiol, the same allergin as poison ivy (they are both in the family Anacardiaceae).

The mongongo is the tree Schinziophyton rautaneni (previously known as Ricinodendron rautanenii) that is found throughout southern Africa. [those botanical names should be either in italics or underlined but I can't figure out how to do that] Both the fruits and seeds are eaten.

Ok, enough of the botany lessons, I need some legume butter on toast ubblol

Okay...I think I already established, a long time ago...over the rainbow...in that deep, meaningful discussion...that I was a macadamia nut...and someone else stole my designation...*cough*Rougie*cough*...but at the risk of being repetitive and redundant...not to mention repetitive and redundant...
