ok, so who's heard of the tesco's "computers for schools" and "sports equipment for schools" promotions that tesco's has been running??

for those that don't know TESCO is the UK's largest supermarket chain ad the promotion is........ that if you spend so much money they give you a voucher that you can drop off at your local school for them to collect and send off for a new computer.

sounds ok dosen't it???

the fact is, each voucher is only worth 0.001pence eek

something as cheap as a football in tesco's sports stuff for schools promotion in fact costs £2000 and a new computer, as basic as you can get will cost £250.000 eek

of course it looks good that they do that, especially when they are a big monster company, but it doesn't matter. these are supplies that the schools would not be getting otherwise. this deal is probably what it is because tesco is a large company, if a smaller group or company tried, it probably would not have worked or have been even a smaller return

"Dear Tesco,

We are not happy with your current "incentive". The fact is your computers arent free enough. I feel I am getting a bad deal, and that you re-consider your pricing on your free computers?"

Or

...that Tesco stop the promotion all together? That way, it wouldn't be unfair. They could join the rest of the companies that don't care... instead of being 'A company that doesn't care, but gives free computers to help children learn'...

That article tells the truth... but, I don't know what you expect really? Times change, and the convinience and cost that 'X' Supermarket brings (its not just Tesco) is naturally popular. You may hate the way you're being "ripped off" on the computer for schools vouchers (I dont see HOW you can be ripped off when the Item is free but hey wink ) and I personally think thats a load of old tripe about this amazing fruit from the Himalayas. Lets see some factual data, not journalist speculation.

Tesco's has its pro's and con's, as does everything else in the world (except for innocent smoothie, thats all pro's biggrin )...

In my opinion, its Pro's far out weigh the con's. If it was really an evil entity... it wouldn't be so popular. Everyone is picking on the bad points. How about the good points? Convinience, cost? The sheer size of the company must mean it has a good employment rate. Try telling me that all the staff working at Tesco could find a job as a grocer... or butcher... or whatever. Those spotty students need Jobs...

Theres far worse things in the world than Tesco... Brussell Sprouts for example.

Add to Asena's post the opening times. All the small butchers/bakers/fishmongers are usually shut when I'm not working, except for Saturdays (where, let's face it, me and lots of others are working, too).

So unless you have a person dedicated to staying at home at least part of the week, specialised small shops (am NOT counting cornershops here) are inaccessible. With the small families and singles making up a large percentage of the population, that's one reason why big chains are more popular.

No, it wasn't. That's the value, calculated by me in an earlier post based on the vouchers required for the lowest valued PC offered, and being extremely generous in Tesco's favour.

In that case the promotional free gift in a box of cereal is charity too.

Asena - Supermarkets are good for employment?
A survey by the National Retail Planning Forum (funded by Boots) found that for every supermarket that opened there was a net loss of 276 retail jobs in the local area.* The jobs that supermarkets do create tend to be low skilled and there is rarely any training that could help an employee move on to better things. Pay and conditions also leave a lot to be desired.

*The survey is cited in this good article on supermarkets' local effects on Corporatewatch.org. The original paper can be got from the national retail planning forum for £15.

I used to work at Tesco checkouts (I was young and naive! Please don't shoot me! wink ), their wages aren't too bad (for unskilled work anyways) and they normally go up yearly (maybe by just a few pence, but I guess 'every little helps'). They do offer their staff options to train up in other departments (like on the fish counter or in the staff restaurant) and to train up as managers of various sections, so there are options, just limited ones.

However...

The working conditions are a bit crappy, mainly because everything is managed pretty strictly so there's not much flexibility around shifts etc, also there are really distinct hierarchies among staff (in the store I was at, anyways), so it all ends up being a bit political. They know their staff are easily replaced too, so they can get away with being really strict about people getting in on time and not being off sick.

Also, what Simian says about Tesco causing other jobs to diminish. Tesco is probably the biggest employer (apart from the NHS) in the town I grew up in, which is good in a way, but it is really hard finding a half-decent job there that isn't at Tesco (unless you have specific skills, like a teacher or doctor).

Many big companies practice "tax avoidance". Easy jet for a start, and we know they're evil. Anyone who makes their employee's wear that hideous uniform cannot be good.

You don't need top level lawyers to defend you in a loophole in the law. Its a moral decision that a company would make to say "yes I will pay" or... "no, I won't". If a company wants to excel and survive... I think they're all gonna take the second option. For this reason, I think legislations should be passed to ensure companies cant avoid tax.

...but where does this money go? Oh ye, £25 billion on a nuclear weapon set... Personally I'd like cheaper fruit & veg...

Factor 10 off I think...

500 pounds equipment per 210 000 spent = 0.0024
= 0.24 pennies per pound or 2.4 pennies per 10 pounds

So 0.24 %, not 0.024

Which may not seem much to you, but considering the huge figures people have quoted on how much profit tesco etc make, it adds up and is probably better spent on computers etc than on management salaries, buying new plots to build new superstores etc.

Still pretty rubbish though, considering your own reckoning on how much incentive cards generally give back was:

 Written by: Birgit

you get about a penny per pound spent

when this scheme returns about five times less than that.

So I was wrong, but only twice as wrong as you were tongue wink

I think greedy might be a more accurate description. But whatever smile

"looks like tesco are trying to take on argos now with the launch of their new at home delivery sirvice and catalogue.

soon they'll be trying to take over woolworths, hmv etc.."

I fail to see how that is a "take on". TESCOs, being the "EVIL" corporation that they are run on supply and demand.

Recently, demand has been made for home delivery services. Whilst Argos has been on the scene the whole time, shops like Sainsbury's have been doing it for a while.

TESCO saw money could be made from their all ready existing customers, so they went for it.

All they're really guilty of there is a little lack of originality.

And if you want to get all eco about it, say 5 people want a weekly shop...

they each go in their cars and make a journey there and back. Thats 5 cars 5 lots of carbon emissions.
if those 5 people do their weekly shop online, all of their shopping goes in the van, the load gets shared

less emissions! Which is good.

And "soon they'll be trying to take over woolworths, hmv etc.."

Ever actually set foot in a TESCO? They already sell DVDs, CDs, TVs, consoles, Toys.

Looks like they beat you to your accusation.

Sorry about that. smile

i honestly hope they DON'T get the go ahead!!

also it was in my local paper yesterday about "tesco land" saying how much of a grip they have over everything.
