Hope no-one minds me making a new topic - couldn't find anything that instantly filled the niche of what I'm about to ask .... wink

In my LJ I've posted that I've been touch with my old mate and that I've started spinning Poi. In some posts for the last week I've mentioned I'm gonna practice and general stuff like that.

A friend on LJ who hasn't really had much love for me lately has now posted a reply which has made me think;

Their comment being, basically;

"Poi is for people who go to dance clubs not fuvking rovk clubs jason, make yourself more annying why dont u?"

Now, like I say, due to my personal life and peoples views on stuff I'm not particularly liked by this person at the moment.

Now, I've been to my fair share of dance clubs. In fact, I have about 5/6 years on top of this person (Been clubbing, mostly Rock, for 13 years now). although, like I say, it's mostly rock/metal.

So - peoples views:

Can a 6'3", Pantera/Hatebreed/White Zombie loving rocker be accepted as a spinner ? I like my DnB, Dance, Rave, Jungle, Dance, Trance, Techno, Electro etc as much as most other clubbers though, music is my life.

Please, don't post anything about being narrow minded or owt, that's not what this is about, but just got me thinking. biggrin

She's made me angry. It all stemmed from the fact that she's the rekindled best-mate of the girl I fell for yadda yadda blah blah. She's been trying to find all sorts of things to have a go at me about, oddly enough I can knock 'em all back at her/them with reasons/excuses etc, but this was the only thing that got me thinking that maybe it was something I should think about.

She's very keen to labeling me a "rocker" and whilst I do look like one I also remember bouncing around in fields when the Prodigy first hit the scene and being into "rave" when I was new etc.

She's young though, conceited, arrogant, full of attitude and thinks the world owes her.

But still - just got me thinking. From what I can see all the aspects of this happy lil community enjoy a wide array of musics, passtimes, lifestyles, careers etc.

I too was once like her. Then I grew up. Here's hoping she will and that I may be able call her friend once more.

Rock City hunh ? Not been in a year or so, got annoyed that I couldn't mosh and bounce around with all the students ramming the place !!!!

Ah, the memories. Soulfly, Slipknot, One Minute Silence, Dredg, MCM, Glassjaw ... so many great nights there !

--Wibble - just re-read that and the thread in general and realised how age-ist it could sound ! Fear not, I socialise with a vast range of ages, from people in the local clubs who are 16/17 (Norty ! Drinkin' aswell! Tsk tsk!) through to 70+ people and anyone in between. It's a specific mindset that might be the issue - that when people think they "know all about the world". The only thing any of us can truly know is that we know nothing of what we could learn and that given time we'd never even learn the smallest fraction of anything. -- biggrin

Oooo ... stuff to torrent later me thinks.

Tried spinning to Atreyu last night. Interesting.

"Wraith with an Angels body, Demon with a voice of gold ..."

*Spins furiously*

*Loses concentration as starts shouting lyrics*

*Drops to floor as speeding juggling balls in socks connect with testes*

Lesson learnt. Ooof.

I don't mind Emo per se, some it can be alright when it's more punky or rocky (MCR for example - boing-boing-boing punkness to me!) but it's just the vasr number of people in there, and quite a few bad memories of the place (Ex's being harassed, door staff being awkward and overly violent without due cause etc.)

I started spinning when I was nearing the end of my grunge phase, back in the day when I thought dance music was numbing...and Kurt Cobain was God. Now I'm really into breakbeat but find it hard to spin to... I

I have often wondered about music choices for spinning to, people do assume certain things go together and a few people have looked at me weirdly when i list the sort of music i like becuase its metal/rock/indie/idustrial/punk/ska/nu metal/emo/god knows/who gives a s**t!

But i have seen poi to rock music, and to trancy stuff (which i can tolerate) ive never seen poi to drum n bass or r n b cos i just cant stand that sort of music so i have never been anywhere playing it, i do listen to some mellow stuff and spinto that, and at spinning meets theres usually some nice rhythmic, not repetitive drums to spin to.

The other day i heard samba music and didnt know which i wanted to do more - join in whacking a drum or pull my socks off for impromptu poi!

I like to try and spin to the music i like, and some things really work well (cant think of an example though, typical!)

But mainly i spin without music, or just listening to what i want and twirling like an idiot and if the poi and the music go in sync its a bonus!

Do what you want and nuts to everyone else, but im glad its not only me who has wondered this.

I rock out too while spinning. Disturbed, System of a Down, Mudvayne, (Bloodhound Gang), Sevendust, early KoRn (Jon Davis doesn't scat any more in his newer work, Twist rocked).
But on another spectrum, I also like to listen to some bhangra while I'm spinnin. I love the punjabi dhol beats.

Just got "I dissappear" by Metallica in my head. Quite beaty - I imagine that'd be groovy to spin to, though for some reason I see it being more impressive with staff.

Gah. I can barely spin and I'm all ready trying envision choons and what to do to them and stuff.

dude!

i am exactly the same.

i love to spin to EBM, D&B, psytrance, ska, punk.

i have been requested to spin at a new EBM night opening in leeds in *less than a month* so i really need to get my act together (litterally) but i adore going out and spinning at raves till 6am. i spin to whatever is on my MP3 player in the work car park over lunch!

i have 10 piercings, 2 tattoos, my boyfriend is the manager of the local rock club.

i <3 spinning and will do it to anything, practically anywhere, and all my friends appreciate it - they think it is exceptionally cool.

My advise would be fine some friends who aprpeciate you!

I have ... pretty much all the old group of friends I was hanging round with have shown themselves to be a bunch of close-minded, conceited judegemental censored-wits.

What can I say - I've eventually found out who my true friends are!

Can't wait till I'm at a standard where I can spin in clubs and stuff. At the moment it's still all basics, but I've been introduced to staff, rope dart and a few bits in the last week or so ... or I've seen 'em online and thought "Me wanna do that toooooooo!"

So much to learn, so little time !

just a sugestion bro but i often spin to NiN, Sound Disciples, Sepultura.

Much can be found in the industrial or tribal sects of metal.

Two of my peorsonal favorites are Jesus Biting Nails (Sound Disciples) or Man Without Fear (Drowning Pool & Rob Zombie)

Final point action/comic book movie soundtracks are great for spinning music (Man without fear is off of the Daredevil soundtrack)

Have Fun

Love the review of this on Amazon..

"""Perfect" is a word often used in reviews, usually without justification. But there's an argument for its use when describing Slaughter of the Soul, the final album by Gothenburg's At The Gates, originally released in 1995."""

Yeah dude, I've been going to the 1st Floor Club for MANY years now ... I vaguely recall it being called the Rock House when I first started going, then Future, then Supanova .... in all I've on-n-off been going there for about 13 years !

Only very rarely see spinners there. Maybe very occasionally - every few months or so ?

I was going up on Tuesday for the Bombshell student nights quite a bit, didn't see anyone spinning then!

Meep - have to keep a look out for ya !

Actually saw a girl in the local rock club in Derby spinning glow-poi on Saturday. Very good, was trying to watch to learn the moves by-proxy or at least figure out vaguely how she did them!

Good mix of choons spun too aswell, some Tool (Which actually I'm beginning to appreciate a bit more as I'm listening to them for spinning possibilities a bit now!), Nirvana (IIRC) and I think she was spinning to Pantera "Cowboys from Hell" too ... which was good, as it's pretty much my fave choon of the past few years !
