A company with close links to the american government tryed to bribe scientists in the uk doing research on global warming to alter their results to make it seem less bad!
Bribes offered to scientists I think this is seriously wrong! they are just trying to make profits while the whole world has to suffer!

Yes, this is well known about, and it's not only with climate change they do it. It's called 'astroturfing' - because it creates false grass roots movements that have more credibility than the company does.

It's going on all the time, not just in the US. frown

What doesn't help, is that there have been cases where the BBC have known about it but still given them air time when talking about climate change - making it seem like there are 'two sides of the argument' rather than a consensus.

We saw it a lot with the ID vs evolution thing as well.

but this is flawed because with this strategy, the scientific evidence has become so overwhelming that fewer and fewer people are listening to those who disagree. Its like if the scientists say global warming is a concern, buy your own scientists to say the opposite. but they have no real evidence to back it up.

I agree, but they are not trying to make you think that is isn't happening as such, they plan to make people think that there is a debate in the scientific community.

It's very powerful: with ID vs evolution it went like this:

1) say that ID is a scientific theory (it's not)
2) The scientists say it's not
3) say that there is an active debate in the scientific community
4) say that teachers should 'teach the controversy'
5) ID theory is well known and a lot of people think that it might have some credibility.

As far as avoiding it, it is very hard to do, because more or less any action adds more weight to the 'other side' no matter how rubbish it is (assuming it's complex enough that people wont full understand it either way).
