well...................at school i wanted to be a mechanic.........................2years later one qualification later i got bored so i decided i wanted to be a scaffolder....................8years later i got layed off and decided on a new more fulfilling direction in life, i want more freedom, freedom from the daily grind of the 9-5 woring week.

i suppose i've woken up and realised, there is more to life than having this or having that, and playing the game the corperations and media tell you to play.

Yea no-one relly knows what they want to be when they grow up, ive got mates in their late 30's who still dont really know.

If you are worrying about what to do after you finnish school think about what you like doing and if you can see a field that might come out of what you like. It might not even be that obvious right now, if you are planning on doing A levels and a degree you will find there are a lot of subjects they dont even cover at school that will help get you a job you might not have thought of yet.

In year 11 loved maths and ended up doing a maths A level (along with economics and chemistry) about half way through my second year i realised that i didnt want to do any of these subjects an more and stupidly dropped out. I dont have any A level now and its one of my biggest regrets. If id thought a bit more about my subjects i probably would have finnished the course.
After a year out i ended up doing an access course for a graphic design degree which i then changed to film and now im trying to work as a film maker. Its a difficult industry but im a million times happier because i do something i love.
Basically try not to worry about it too much, even if you choose somehintg you later decide isnt for you any more yo still have time to change your mind and do something else. yea its good to choose a path and follow it but most people arnt lucky enough to choose the right thing first time. If you work hard you will do well at anything you want.
Good luck

My friend went to a boys public school, and when the careers person asked everyone what they wanted to do when they grew up, they all said they wanted to be gynaecologists.

i would say get a general idea of what you like to do...you wouldn't want to be a person who hates their career...but things change and there are always new influences
for example, i wasn't sure what i wanted to do until my senior year in high school, went into resource management...found out i was allergic to trees and mold, so i went into communication because it was broad, and found out about mediation, and i focused on that, but right now i work front desk and even when i do get certified it isn't a full time job, so i still have to find what i want to do when i grow up

I'm currently working in IT and I don't have the most positive view of it after working in it briefly. I plan to teach English in Japan next year after I finish the last dregs of my uni course. I ran an ad-hoc yoga class at a festival last year and I was STRONGLY encouraged to pursue it later in life, which I may end up doing, but nothing is certain just yet smile

that would be me, too!! 37 and not a clue!! but... I'm not stressing about it either...

I'm currently a computer programmer, have been for about 10 years and frankly, I despise it... but... I know that the right thing and I will find each other when we're ready... I reckon we're all pushed way too hard to figure it all out, way too early... get out there and enjoy life for a little while before you commit yourself to a lifetime of "seemed like a good idea at the time".

i freaked out so much at the beginning of my lat year of high school about what i was going to do, i took an extra year to do high school. i then embarked on a degree (bachelor of arts) - dropped out half way through, took 6 months off study, embarked on a second degree (bachelor of education - unfortunatly the year and a half of first degree didn;t contribute towards second one at all) dropped out of that one half way through, worked for 5 years in ticketing and box office at festivals, worked my way up to managers positions. now i'm back at tafe studying to become a librarian, praying that i love it and have found myself a career before i hit 30!

best advice i can offer is to get out and try out as much as you can. volunteer at things you have an interst in, see if it's what's you expect. get part-time entry level jobs where you can, and see if there is scope for your talents. if any of your parents friends have intersting jobs talk to them about them and what they actually involve.
best of luck, but remember it doesn;t matter if you have a few stumbles before you hit your stride peace

ditto

I'm only a little 'un (23 next month... ARRGGHH!!!) but I'm trying hard not to regret the choices I was forced to make, mostly because I screwed everything up at A-Level, did a three year degree in four, and almost didn't finish. Even before I went to uni I thought I'd made the wrong choice, and barely scraped through my first and second years. Now I've been out of uni almost eight months, can't get a job, and I'm trying to make up for lost time by studying in my own time some of the things I wish I'd carried on, like music, and IT.

So I guess I'd have to say IMHO the worst thing you can do is to do something you think you HAVE to do rather than something you want to do and will enjoy. Don't feel pushed to make any decisions now. You have all the time in the world. Take a year out - take five years out. Be happy.

I am 19 and pretty much realised I have very little huge life ambitions. I want to learn to drive, get a bus, paint it like an LSD trip and drive around the world going to as many festivals on the way..selling..something.... But...whever that will actually happen or not I do not know...

Don't worry that you don't know what to do with your life. If you are forced to make choices young, then the chances are you'll do something that later you will think...Hold on why did I do that? This isn't where I want to be....

I've been just going with the flow for a couple of years and I'd recommend it.... still don't know where I'm going (or even where I want to end up, really), but I'm happy enough just going with it and taking everything in my stride. For me it's the best way to live for the time being, it saves me from getting stressed!

You'll have plenty of options open to you with those under your belt, so I wouldn't let the future worry you too much. Best to focus on getting the most out of the present, so study hard, play hard and take care of yourself. Everything will work out in the end, it normally does. smile

In 11th grade I wanted to join the Blue Knights (a drum corp here) and begin a musical route in life... I was dead set on doing something musical.

Then I screwed up... and had to graduate a semester late. During that time I met someone... got pregnant... and graduated while pregnant. I started going to college and decided that although I love music... it wasnt my path in life.

I then started college to become an English teacher... and now I am almost done with school smile:):):)

Things will come to you... sometimes you just dont know what you want and thats fine. Sometimes you do know what you want... I say just go to college, scope out what you like, and let things flow. Have fun in college, do well, and your life will fall into place before you know it smile

I think I'm quite lucky, I pretty much decided when I was 13/14 that I was gonna be a guitarist. I dropped out of school gradually, (screwed up gcse completely one g and one e) but then I managed to blag my way into college (even though I should have had to have more gcse). Finished that last year with MMP (2 Bs and a C equiv) and applied to uni for this year. If I get into uni I should be set for 3 years or so until I have a degree.

See, I admire that kind of commitment!

I had a friend who is out there now saving the world in his own way, he got a 1st degree in pure chemistry and did his PhD project on making solar power more efficient, or something like that.

I also wanted to save the world, but I was more focused on releiving poverty, human rights abuses and human suffering. So I did my degree in social anthropology, but then learned that all the issues are way, way more complicated than I could have ever imagined! I think your approach is more likely to work!

Im in 12th grade. About a year ago, I figured out that art was really the only thing that I could do that would make me really happy, ceramics in particular. This year, I've tweaked my schedule so that 5 out of my 7 classes are independent study ceramics classes. Last semester, I had to decide where I wanted to go to college, scary, no? So, I had to convince my parents that it was a good idea for me to go to an art school, and that I had a future when I would graduate, other than peddling my wares on streetcorners and starving. That was pretty difficult. There is a Kurt Vonnegut quote where he says "If you want to hurt your parents, but you dont have the guts to be a homosexual, the least you can do is pursue a career in the arts." Im not sure how that's related, but it made me laugh. Anyway, right now, Im making lots of pottery, discovering awesome alternative firing methods. I plan on going to art school for 4 years, maybe pick up a teaching certification, and teach high school ceramics. Id like to pursue a work-study residency in China when Im old enough. Thats my deal. juggle
