Your thoughts?

International Readers... or readers who live under a rock...:
Adult Swim, a late-night programming block of Cartoon Network (a Turner Broadcasting channel), features a rather popular cartoon short called Aqua Teen Hunger Force. The 15 minute cartoon features the random adventures of human sized food, namely french fries (Frylock), a milk shake (Master Shake), and what appears to be a meatball (Meatwad), who live in a rental house in New Jersey. While the show generally highlights the adventures of these three (the Aqua Teen Hunger Force), the show also includes a rather assorted ensemble of characters in addition to those three, including the Mooninites, two vulgar mouthed aliens who venture about, destroy things, steal, and flip people off.

Recently, in large cities, including Boston, New York, Seattle, Austin San Francisco, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, and Atlanta (the home of Cartoon Network), some strange signs have been appearing. In truth, they are small led boards featuring Igniknot, one of the Mooninites, with his middle finger raised. While the signs were up for two to three weeks in most cities, the people of Boston suddenly noted them as "mysterious" and "menacing-appearing" in nature. Thus, panic ensues in Boston alone, as the city is shut down in a terror.

The act, while initially denied by Turner Broadcasting, was later admitted as a guerilla advertising campaign. This did not stop the two men in Boston who were responsible for placing the signs up from being charged as for a criminal hoax.

Now, I pose the same question to our internation, or otherwise unaware audience: your thoughts?

Had you been able to get your hands on one of those things, you would have found yourself sitting on eBay gold...reports I've seen have them going for about 5 grand.

Actually, there are a few of them on eBay right now.

One of my friends in Atlanta has actually located one new his house. However, despite his own urge to own one (and my pestering him to steal it for me for my room!), he can't get it. It's too high and in too dangerous of a spot on an overpass of a very busy highway.

Still, I'd rather not worry about the ATF, CIA, and/or FBI busting in my house for owning a "bomb." wink

Apparently, however, they were all over Atlanta for close to a month. A couple of my friends spotted one near Buckhead about two weeks ago (and are currently kicking themselves for not taking it!). No one cared, and, in the panic attack, no one realized that they had been up for some time. Even in Boston, they had been spotted for at least a week or longer before the panic. shrug

Is this right:

A poster, depicting a cartoon character making a rude sign, is posted in cities around America... and Boston takes this as a security alert, shutting the place down in fear?

Is that basically it?

Damn. It just keeps getting worse. confused

I feel like screaming and shaking certain people in America saying 'what are you doing?!!' Stop listening to the rubbish and fear pumped out of your news stations. They are competitive and only looking for ratings!

It's cartoon aliens!!!! ubbloco

Do you really think terrorists (whatever they are) would use cartoon aliens to advertise the fact they want to blow you up!? Seriously?

(Picture the scene... Mr Terrorist, sitting in his little terrorist motel room, he has bad hair, bad skin and he smokes cigarettes. One day, he realises that instead of blowing things up, he should really fck with people's minds... Oh, how to do it?! Hmmm. Yes. Let's take a popular cartoon, and put up some posters. That'll get em. Tragically.)

My opinion?

Some people in America have to wake up to this insanity. Turn off your televisions. Stick by the constitution you're so proud of, allowing free speech for all (without squishing it through paranoia).

The people of Northern Ireland, Palestine, Israel, and countless other nations have been putting up with (or until recently put up with) indiscriminate bombings for years... and no other country has responded with the nonsense hysteria seen coming out of some sections of America.

Have a bit of dignity! The 'terrorists' win if you let them defeat you mentally.

Yeush.

(PS: Just to make it clear, I am not ranting against the 40% of America that realises that this is nonsense and fear-mongering hysteria. Just the other idiots).

They were actually small, led boxes with that lit up. Perhaps about a square foot or slightly more in size. The overall appearance was rather like the old Lite-Bright toys from the 1980s and 1990s. They were deposited in random places across the previously mentioned cities. However, in the city of Boston, someone decided that the boxes were "menacing looking," because they were black and filled with wires, lights, and a clock (*a timer to turn on the lights at night). That's what started the panic.

Here, I found an image of one of the Mooninite's in question from the Boston invasion...

I think it is freakin' hysterical and had me laughing for a looooooooong time.

I think that no one will be going to jail for life for this, that simply plays into the hype as well. The best they are going to get are slaps and fines for "pollution" or misuse of city property or advertising without a license or some such stupidity.

Also, about that terrorist record for life thing...if you live in the US, have a phone, a credit card, a library card and now a Barnes and Noble or Borders (major book store chains) cards, you already have one. It was announced last week that the book store cards are being added to the lists to track peoples purchases and tag those who buy, borrow or otherwise look sideways at something that might be concidered "terrorist" material. I'm pretty sure my profile is pretty funny actually, as I use my B&N card every chance I get. That whole profile thing is nothing new to any of us. The Library card one has been in place for years and years. shrug

I think it's typical of current US paranoia and I find that *very* pathetic.

I showed my son pictures of it, without describing the situation and asked what he'd think if he saw it on the street. First thought was "I used to have that toy." Second thought was "He's whipping the bird, that's funny. That's on a tv commercial, but without the bird ya know, cuz it isn't allowed."
My 11 yo could figure out what adults could not. PATHETIC.

Posted:Pele. A brilliant marketing plan ? maybe now after all the attention the Boston incident generated, but before that, what percentage of the population do you figure would actually recognize the character portrayed on the signs. I'm guessing it would be in the neighbourhood of less than 1 percent.

Were it Spongebob on the other hand, I wonder whether Boston might have reacted with a little more common sense.

The problem with prosecuting those two guys as perpetrating a hoax, is the prosecution is going to have a tough time proving that these guys constructed a device with the intent of creating a resemblance of an "infernal machine" ( eg. a molotov cocktail, or wrapping sticks in brown paper to resemble dynamite ) and proving that their intent was to create panic in the first place. No doubt Turner Broadcasting is going to be paying for their defense.

....Than people not notice.... what? What is it that we're noticing here? Oh no, glowy cartoon characters-- what is the world coming to! Next it'll be sinister bumper sticker conspiracies. Evil potted plants! Horrible stuffed animals!

You can't watch out for everything at once. Mindless paranoia is a thousand times WORSE than just minding your own damn business and not worrying about it, because it fosters panic, and gets people locked up for no good reason, and cuts down on there being ANY chance of a REAL threat ever getting seen in the middle of the freaking out. This whole thing is just stupid.

Than people not noticing anything at all, which is a far more dangerous epidemic (self-centered, introversion) than people being curious.
It doesn't matter what it was as long as people noticed.

Stout, people *did* notice. They noticed in other cities as well. It doesn't matter when or how, but that they do. That is not only the core of advertising, it is what makes this brilliant. When stuff like this pops up without rhyme or reason, it causes a stir and gets noticed. They were hoping for media curiousity, they got hype. Worked out better than they had planned.
Most brilliant things in the world are quite accidental, despite best laid plans.

Actually, my brother and I were talking about the same thing.

Sadly, we had been plotting our own throwie event to cover the rusting out skeleton of a failed high-rise apartment complex that was never complete in Asbury. Then, this happened. frown

And about the library cards, that's just... eek!!

At least it creates jobs I suppose, someone has to process all the library card irregularities and work on the hotline for citizens concerned about lunar cartoon characters presenting a threat to the population.

minding your own business and not saying anything is imho more dangerous than not saying anything at all
maybe you think something is going on or looks suspicious but you don't say anything because it's not your problem...

Posted:Do you seriously think those little characters are comparable to thinking you recognise someone from a police wanted picture? confused

Martin Niemoeller's words are very much out of context here, because after all what's happening in the "fight against terror" with all its over-reactions IS some innocent people being held in prisons and questioned with dubious methods. Others are arrested and charged with "criminal hoax" for something that would've given them a fine for illegal advertising not so long ago, and in most places in the world.

If the little moon guys had been "coming for someone", sure, speaking out would've been more than justified. But what's happening here is people speaking out against one of many absolutely exaggerated reactions that will not do anyone any good.

Being curious and attentive is very well and good, sure, it's being 'paranoid' that's just not helpful. Paranoia is what has people giving their civil liberties away left and right-- how many innocent people that get 'noticed' doing something harmless are going to be disappeared without explanation, held indefinitely and possibly tortured without even being charged or getting a lawyer? The laws have changed, it's probably already happening.
