So, when do you think the trees and lights should be taken down?

My friend had his tree last year until after St. Pats. They decorated it with Shamrocks and little gold coins. They are hoping for the same, or longer this year.

Our town was thinking about passing some kind of ordinance stating that christmas lights have to be down by a certain date after the holiday.

So, what the longest you've left your stuff up?

(mine is long since down...but I only just put the place back to normal positioning.)

6th of January... "3 Kings Day" is traditional back home (Germany). And we only put it up on Christmas Eve. So it's something special smile

As for the light, we use real candles on the tree, so I guess whenever they're burnt down!

4th wise man? Never heard of him! We only get 3, on the 6th Jan. I suppose that's when the anglosaxon "twelve days of Christmas" end, yes?

It's funny how essentially the church made up all of these dates, and yet they're different in so many countries biggrin

well at my folks place the tree always goes up on (or around...depending on if i'm around cos apparently it's become my job!) december 1 & it all comes down on january 6 - i think it's the twelve days thing - but also epiphany. which sucked when i was a kid cos my birthday is january 7 - so the place would be all lovely & decorated & then for my birthday? nothing! ubblol

Zenooph ubblol How very redneck of you! wink

Gita, that sucks! I'd have left a string of lights up just for you!

I supposed I should answer my own question.
They go up whenever I feel like it and they come down as soon after NY as schedule allows and it humanly possible.

I'm impressed with how many here have dates to it all. It's so...organized! eek

There's a 4th wiseman? Is that like the 4th guy in the 3 Stooges?

Most of all of this, from my understanding, came from the old country traditions of the hanging of the greens and the dates of the lunar calendar....will have to go into my books and see what I can find!!! Yippeeeeee!!!!! Have a research mission!!!

I've just sawed up 4 Christmas trees that had been dumped on the sidewalk on my way to the bus for firewood. I've been annoyed for days because people just threw them there and noone picked them up. And now I have more wood biggrin

ubblol @ Kathain that was me a few years ago, when it was such a pain to get it back into storage.

Brigit, I have a few neighbors who just put their trees by the curb. Should I tell them yer coming? wink It's a good way to get good pine since people don't usually choose Charlie Brown lookin' trees.

Psycotic_furby...please tell me it was a fake tree! wink *imagines brown, needle-less tree sad in a corner*

hmmmmm maybe flying all the way to America wouldn't be such a good idea. I mean, what if I load my suitcases with wood and then they're too heavy and I can't take them back? But they could put the trees in a box and ship them!

For us the inside decorations goes up the weekend of Thanksgiving and then comes down the weekend after New Years.

Outside lights are a little different. Depending on the time of year they are called Christmas lights or fairy lights. biggrin
