Ok ... i wanted to post this to give newbies some food for thought.

Way back in 2001 i decided to list some ideas for progression categorised into families.

I never really got around to finishing all of my ideas but i want to post this list in hope that it will be of use for some one.

Also to help myself relearning new ideas.

Maybe as a community it would be good for some feed back or help in this list.

I have never shown any one this list or posted it any where until now, remembering that it's ideals are aimed towards newbies and progressing into intermediate and onwards. Sine i have made this list there are ehaps of new stuff, from isolations, atoms, hybrids etcetera... maybe these could be listed.

I felt that a basic description was never really needed... so leaving only a list. wink

Well, now that you've intimidated the average newbie with a massive list. wink maybe some sort of order in which these moves might be most effectively learned might be a little less daunting.

After all, the idea with newbies is to get them up and "doing poi" as quickly as possible and suggestions as to which moves and transitions to learn and in what order will ( hopefully ) keep them interested in continuing on with these arts.

Surely the order in which to learn things depends greatly on the individual?
Even if PK reorders this list it could well be completely the wrong order for someone else who may find butterfly based moves really easy but same direction moves really difficult.

Also, the free lessons section of this site goes through things in a reasonably logical sequence for most people and as PK said - there are no descriptions in this list, so people are going to have to look for other help in learning moves anyway.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

BovrilMonkey, fair enough, but I was thinking that your average newbie might find the giant windmill easier to learn, than the 5 beat BTB weave, both are on the list, so if one were to pick at random....

I can see a potential problem here.

*shrugs* I don't see a problem at all, unless people don't think for themselves anymore (yes, I know it's quite possible they don't wink ).
Just looking at the name should be a good indication for most people. As a general rule, the longer and more complicated the name, the more complicated and difficult to learn the move - I'm sure people can work that out for themselves.

As the start of a comprehensive list of moves goes, I think this one's pretty good (although a complete list would be huge).
As a 'how to spin poi for newbies' guide, it doesn't work very well, but that's not what it was intended to be I think.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

I see your point BovrilMonkey, It's just that your perspective as an experienced spinner, doesn't really translate well to newbies wondering what to do next. You know what the moves are all about, I do too, but someone new to these arts isn't really going to have the same comprehension when it comes to difficulty.

Waist wrap,,that sounds easy.....doesn't it?

That's because the basic front half waistwrap is relatively easy.

Add in a couple more words or an acronym to the name and it gets a lot harder, but in a list of waist wraps, it should be obvious to most people which are going to be easier or harder.

I really don't think a list can be sorted to show which basic moves from each family are easier - I find front half waistwraps much easier and more comfortable to do than a standard butterfly, so if I sorted that list it'd be out of sequence for a lot of people - people have to learn that for themselves, or it'll be hampering their learning as much as it'd be helping anyone else's.

Edit..

Also, I think that showing people moves based on their difficulty is completely the wrong way of going about it - a hell of a lot of moves are only considered difficult because they run contrary to how we learnt to spin.

For example - people who've spent years spinning poi can have major problems learning antispin, because it just feels different to all the spinning they've ever done.

Show it to someone who's only just started spinning and they generally get it sorted relatively quickly - they've not learnt any habits that make it difficult.

Bov..only problem with your theory is that it runs contrary to any idea of moves that should be considered basic building blocks. For instance, nobody says you have to learn the reverse three beat weave after learning the forwards one, but it's going to hamper your efforts if you decide that the next move you want to learn is the fountain.

However,,I was never happy with my TTN, until i learned the four beat TTN, which made this relatively easy in theory, but harder in practice, move feel much more comfortable to spin.

Theory and learning wink that was the intent by my posting this... it was never finished in the first place, it was a method in which i learned by and probably give ideas to others.

Some may criticise... some may not, either way it is now here on hop for people to make up their own conclusion. ubbidea That was my idea... and in no way was it meant to be an in-depth list of moves, just ways in which it is POSSIBLE to do moves and variations grouped into families... progression is there upon the newbie. wink

(my thoughts and theories from some years ago) might be wrong might be right... confused ubbidea

rolleyes isn't it easier to just pick one from the list rather than some one telling you what to learn!.

i am quite new at the poi thing still, and it'd be useful to know how the moves in this list look or what they do, for example i need some more fast or 'wow' moves for when the music reaches its loudest level, and some lazy smooth moves for the slower bits.

then i could skip to bits to add in to my repertoire (such as it is!)

(i know it all depends on how fast you go, but hopefully you get what i mean- those bits where people go 'ooooh' or 'aaaaah')

That comes with practice and understanding.

Having split the list into families it is relatively simple to figure out what the pattern will look like.

Most are pretty basic like.. some are just plain stupid but to give you an idea of what can be done rather... than giving up after 3 beat weave and the butterfly. wink

For a more descriptive view there is a thread by simian which links all of the useful most asked about poi moves for newbies listed at the top of the poi moves forum, if that will help you understand the workings of some of the basics, i even contributed to them oh so long ago.
