Inspired by the outstanding level of awful lyrics in the Rock Thread I thought the topic deserved a little corner of its own! biggrin

A few to kick us off:

"Once he built missiles, a nations defence
Now he can't even give birthday presents"

Iron Maiden - Man On The Edge

"Legalistic people suck
Legalism makes me sick
I wonder what makes them tick
I wanna go and puke on it"

MXPX - I'm The Bad Guy

"He was a boy
She was a girl
Can i make it any more obvious
He was a punk
She did ballet
What more can i say"

Avril Lavigne - Skater Boy

"If you wanna be my lover, you gotta get with my friends."

Spice Girls - Wannabe

Lol, and if you thought the Maiden one was bad:

"Someone left the cake out in the rain
I don't think that I can take it
'cause it took so long to bake it
And I'll never have that recipe again... Oh, no!"

Donna Summer - MacArthur Park

genius!!! ubblol biggrin

Fox, I'm certainly not anti-commercialist... but I really don't see what's wrong with sharing some stupid/silly things you've come across and having a laugh about them smile

I still think, especially with stuff like 90s-techno-pop (which maybe you didn't get so much of outside mainland Europe - lucky you!) it was just a fill-lines-with-something-that-rhymes-and-is-dance-or-sex-related job, and unless you're really not talented with language that's not too hard. Ditto with lyrics for lots of tv casting show people. But we can agree to disagree hug

OMFG some one else who listens to alice in chains.

I came to the stunning realisation a couple of months after dusting off one of my old AIC albums that they were Emo music for the 90's still awesome though. I love anything from seattle. My brothers gf imported a copy of a mother love bone album in from the US for him for xmas. it is awesome. Mind you with two members of Pearl Jam how could they not be.

Yup, to show u that people dont care what they hear.

I couldn't agree more. People aren't in it for the lyrics.

They're in it for the image.

Hardly anyone from my school likes the stuff I like because its to "political".

Punk Rock is political? Anti-establishment, sure...

I don't see why not being able to write lyrics should stop someone criticising other peoples. Silliness! I probably wouldn't make much of a politician but I'm certainly not gonna let that stop me criticising how my countries MPs act. tongue

Most lyrics (particually the ones written specifically for commercial consumption) are awfull and cliche ridden through laziness on the writer's part or just from a supreme lack of creativity.

Also, when alot of lyrics are written they are pretty much to fill a gap. Just for ANYTHING to say. The vocal melody is far more important in most pop/RnB style songs than the words. Therefore usually almost no effort is put in to writing them.

Anyway, it's not like it's a hate campaign, I love lots of music that has awful lyrics! smile

Punk makes me laugh, it's one of the most dogmatic, close-minded, musically tired, unchanging scenes in existence. If it's not exactly like it was in the 70's then you're selling out!!!

Tranlsation of "Chan Chan" from Buena Vista Social Club:

The love I have for you
I cannot deny
My mouth is watering
I just can't help myself.
When Juanika and Chan Chan
Sifted sand together on the beach
How her bottom shook and
Chan Chan was aroused.
Clean the dry sugar cane leaves
from the path
So I can get to that trunk
I want to sit down.
I'm going from Alto Cerdo to Marcane
Then from Cueto, I'm going to Mayari.

Maybe it's a Cuban thing?
Meh, it's a good song.

The worst 'commercial' bad lyrics?

"No no, no no no no, no no no no, no no, there's no limits."

Nuff said.

*cough*

Actually, emo was an offshoot of punk. S'been around for time, but was never really popular.

'Till now, that is. smile

Oh! I just remembered the famous lyrics that weren't...

Crashtest Dummies

"Mmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmm Mmmmmmmmm"

From the song Mmmmmmmmmmmm

Yes, those are classic for certain.

Well. Bad lyrics surely can't be mentioned without some of that Fred Durst magic;

i did it all for the nookie (come on) the nookie (come on)
so you can take that cookie and stick it up your (yeah)
stick it up your (yeah) stick it up your (yeah)
stick it up your

In that case, we need to also put up some Kid Rock, who I am a fan of btw....

"My name is KiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiD"

Thanks for that introduction.

"Kid Rock!"

Oh, and there's a last name

"Bawitdabadibangdabangdiggydiggy....."

You get the idea of the profundity I'm hinting at. wink

I'm really surprised no-one has mentioned Alanis Morisette - Ironic yet.

Even she has publicly admitted that very little (if any) of the things mentioned in the song are ironic in any way.

Emo'ism is just the 21st century way of expressing adolescent angst'ness. Except back in the 90's we were way more hard core than the emos of these years.

So...

Nothing in the song (with the given exception) is Ironic. That makes the title of the song ironic...
I feel like we may be wondering into a self perpetuating logical paradox here.

I'm just going to leave this here and walk over...
