The Tweenager

The word "Teenager" was coined in the 1920s and it seems the Noughties (= 00s for those who didn't know) is coining the "Tweenager"

Honestly, it makes me want to cry and to never bring kids into such a world. I see Bratz birthday cakes in my job all the time, and as Pineapple Pete will tell you, they make me want to scream. I see little girls in knee high boots and mini-skirts asking me to put "My Humps" or "anything by the PussyCat Dolls" on and it just makes me so sad. My own mother was worried when I started listening to the Spice Girls who sang about Girlpower and friendship. And I was 11. These girls are 6 and listening to song lyrics that say "loosen up my buttons, baby"

Any parents out there like to comment? Any younger ones like me who are worried about the world they will bring children in to?

i see what your saying sister/brother...

i actually see stuff far worse than that.

i went to parties and saw 12-14 year old kids takin drugs. (not hardcore, but still, smokin dope and droppin acid is still heavy for a 14 year old kid! and still, what are a 14 year old kid doing at a rave!)

and yeah, i see al those girls walkin around bare naked, wanting to be bigger.

and the little kids that walk around cursing everything and talkin about fuckin this and fuckin that.

i dont think the parents really care...

or they do care, but the kids just tells them to shut up and they do..

i dont know whats up with the parents, im not a parent so i cant know.

what i do know, is that that kinda stuff makes kids lose their childhood very early.

but we cant really change it....

because if it was a goverment problem, u can protest.

but if its people's minds, you cant really do anything but convince them that its wrong.....

Peace

Actually, I think it's a by-product of the rampant commercialism in tween pop music: for example take the pussycat dolls: IMHO strippers given mikes and asked to sing songs: I mean 'Don't you wish your girlfriend was hot like me?' what sort of message does that give to kids? Do you thinking they have the slightest concern over what might be happening to their major fanbase (tweens) I severely doubt it: They have one concern: making money, while they can, before things start to sag, they split up, etc.

I think it's got worse recently though, remember in the past when we had bands like 'Steps' where a lot of the music was about friendship etc, rather than about stuff that was more directly connected to sex.

English kids these days often make me frown Specially when I compare them to the Chinese kids here.

Yes, I've noticed this, not so much locally, but I'm not involved in the primary school system, so I can't deny that's it's happening here too. I've mostly noticed this in Latin American countries.

And it really creeps me out in a " who's this supposed to appeal to, pedophiles ?" kinda way. These girl's mothers need a good slap upside the head. spank

Seriously. It's getting really bad. I've been putting in time at a local daycare center, and I'm seeing the same thing. I also can't believe that Bratz dolls are making Barbie (*of all the dolls!) look practically demure in some cases.

There's nothing stranger than seeing a 6-8 year old who dresses.... er.... I won't say better (because it's not encouraging for someone that young to dress this way) and I won't say "sluttier" (because.... no)..... but, perhaps, more salacious than I do when going to the club.... and they're just going to the supermarket or school! shrug

with having a 9 yo daughter, I see this stuff around and it sickens me.
Far more noticeable in more affluent suburbs over here, probably 'cos the damn clothes, make-up, etc cost so damned much.
Thankfully, my family doesn't have much money so Raquel (my daughter) knows not to ask for much, let alone stuff like that.

My daughter does not, will not and will never be allowed to dress like a child whore.

Sorry 'bout my use of words but to my eyes, that exactly what the parents of these children are putting across to everyone else.

Incidentally, when she asked for me to buy her the pussycat dolls album (she likes the music, doesn't really listen to the words) I told her to go through my mp3 files and tell me what she liked, I then burnt them to a cd for her and "whalla", no more asking.

Thankfully my kids are rather down to earth which helps.

Being in teaching I am increasingly disturbed by how quickly kids, especially girls seem to be growing up nowadays, moreso because it does seem to be very commercially driven.

It has become quite the norm to see 11 year olds (I don't teach any younger) wearing dangerously low slung trousers with their red diamante G string proudly visible at the back (my mam would have gone spare and started ranting about kinky knickers and yeast infections). Girls in the middle of growth spurts tottering about in stillettos (what kind of parent provides stilletos as school shoes, they're dangerous) and wrecking their joints in the process. Playboy branded stationary and accessories (the kids might not quite understand but no way would I let my 12 year old daughter advertise the world's largest pornographers, and I'm no prude either).

I remember one year I went to the school's christmas talent contest and was watching groups of young girls (all under 16) performing urban/streetdance, which was basically a speeded up version of what strippers do in clubs, and it was horrible. Not simply because they were young, but because while they attempt to recreate the movements of their idols, their youth and immature sexuality is so glaringly obvious, it just looked awkward and disturbing.

It's a difficult issue for parents I know. Kids that don't have the latest stuff don't "fit in", well I never fitted in, and I never needed therapy for it. Parents feel mean if they don't give it to them, but parents are parents, not Santa Claus, and girls need to learn how to behave appropriately, to distinguish the difference between stage fantasy and a safe reality. The cynic in me has to give a derisive snort in the direction of parents who worry about paedophiles and teenage boys with wandering hands; but let their daughters dress like prostitutes and hang around bus stops.

I work with kids all the time and I would have to aggree that it is definately the fault of the media more than anything else, I run parties at an Educational Play center for kids and also work at a rollerskating rink.

At the play center we have a game where you have to stick a heap of pegs in a wall in the shortest time possible, sounds innocent enough doesn't it, well I got the shock of my life when I saw a group of 11-12yo girls at a party pretending using these cylindrical shaped pegs as dildos... and asking me, if I thought they were "sexy".

And as if it couldn't get worse as I mentioned earlier I work at a rollerskating rink, I'm the DJ there, as part of a normal session we run an "off skate dancing time" where kids (or older) can take of their skates and dance in the middle of the rink to whatever music I play, I put on rock your body by Justin Timberlake (the same one he and Janet Jackson Performed when that 'wardrobe malfunction' happened) and all the tweens dressed in supre clothing and sporting CFM boots decide to make their way out on the floor and start "dirty dancing" but wait it gets worse... Not one but 3 11-12yo girls decide to imitate the wardrobe malfunction and expose their friends chests...

If the media ain't to blame who is...

Being in Australia we don't religiously sit and watch the Superbowl so the only way any of us saw it was to watch the news... What are parents supposed to do? Stop their childeren from watching the news and keeping up with current affairs...

I agree, I hate the fact that these girls are learning to dress like tarts at such a young age. I remember seeing g strings for kids. It's just so wrong.

I hope that when I have kids, they'll look up to me as a role model, and not some faceless slut on the telly.

Actually, I kind of disagree with that. I think they followed it because Justin Timberlake is their hero, not because they saw it on the news. I actually am in support of the nightly news showing it because I believe we shouldn't be so paranoid about our bodies in Australian society (although from what I understand, it's better than America as American tv blurred out her breast).
What is on the news is what is happening in the world. There is violence on the news because there is violence in the world. Janet Jackson's boobs are on the news because her boobs are in the world.
I direct you to the song Horror Movie by the Skyhooks:
It's a horror movie right there on my TV
Horror movie right there on my TV
Horror movie and it's blown a fuse
Horror movie, it's the six-thirty news

(and the rest of the lyrics is well worth reading if anyone else is interested. and remember that the song was written in the 70s)

The term "Tween" has been around since I was one ever so many years ago.

I agree about Bratz being horrible. Luckily, I have a boy. Boy toys haven't changed really, just more "tech". Though we do battle the pants under the ass...ugh.

It's not the media, it's the parents. Now, stylists and media perpetuate these ideas but I worked a concert that had Pop 20 style music in it. The audience was a goodly percentage of tweens. I watched YOUNG girls dressed and dancing as hootchies, with their mothers acting the same way. The influence starts at home.

eek

I'd be miffed if I got that note home.

They're doing alot of stuff they shouldn't be. My nephew lost his virginity at 11. I was very confused by the whole ordeal and I know I slapped him upside the head, and my sister, over it.

I also don't remember rules when I was in school stating how much flesh clothes must cover. Skirt lengths but not all the rest. It's creepy.

I have had a hatred for the whole bratz bizzo since my 7 year old niece started playing with them.

They have just recently bought out g strings and bras from the bratz clothing range for 4-11 year olds.

I stood in shock looking at all the little frilly knickers and bras in Target and thought in dismay..."no way!"

Then about three weeks later my niece was asking her dad for a bratz "boobie top" (bra)

I mean WTF?!

I really believe that Bratz have a lot to answer for when they are encouraging 4 year olds to dress as hoochies.
Not only that but the parents need a good snap kick to the back of the head if they are going out and buying their pre-pubescent girl child lacy knickers and bras...

faithinfire, I am wondering what is the nature of the connection you see between this issue- young tweens dressing like whores, and feminism? Do you think this is a result of the days of bra burning?;) I am curious.

If it relates to feminism at all, I would see it as an insidious breakdown of feminist principles, turning the sexual freedom around on itself, so it becomes a trap of sorts.

Unfortunately freedom of choice carries the risk some people will do stupid things with it.

I agree with most everyone that parenting is the crucial factor. The media is an influence, peer pressure at school, etc, also, but ultimately a child raised within a stable family structure that teaches self respect and healthy boundaries is less likely to get sucked into it.

I also have a stray thought, wondering about if the fact girls are starting their menstrual cycles and hitting puberty so much earlier than they used to, is somehow influencing this?Or visa versa? r not? just a curious connection that popped up...

Feminism could give us two perspectives on this issue.

In the first, it could be viewed as an empowerment through reclamation of sexuality and freedom of sexual expression..

The second would have these girls as victims of a partichial society that uses sexual imagery to objectify women/girls, and reinforce traditional, sterotypical societal roles.

If I had the ability to channel the ghost on Andrea Dworkin, my money's on the chance she'd go with the second option.

this taken to the extreme...it was a reclamation of our sexuality, but like so many things it swung way way way out there and now reinforces the women as objects.

i think it started off as being comfortable with sexuality because it was thought of as wrong and dirty for so long...and then the skirts started getting shorter and the shirts skimpier-models and fashion are not helping. some go out hoochied-up and see it as "freeing" not comprehending the objectification that they are doing to themselves.

I do not know why it is being accepted to market to younger kids, because that is what they are. perhaps, it is because they are suggestible and when they see something they want, the parent hears about it a lot.

This is where the parents come in. kids will sneak out in clothes their parents don't want them to wear but how do the young ones get these clothes...they don't really have money except for allowances

As for earlier maturation, i think it has to do with chemicals in foods, but it also may have to do with lifestyles. there is less stress on our bodies. when there is stress, our bodies can not have a period because instinctually it feels that a pregnancy would add too much strain on the body. back in the day, people were more active with farming, walking, riding, even household chores...try baking everyday, ick...but now, we ride around in cars, trains, buses, airplanes; we can go to the market or fastfood. less body stress, perhaps, leads to early maturation (this is an extreme idea that just popped in my head so please don't jump on me for it)

for tweens-it starts at home, parents don't buy the clothes, don't let them modify, don't let them wear makeup so young, don't buy bratz, don't give in to the whining and tantrums that these disgusting marketing claims bring on

of course, i'm not a mother

In this day & age of"mum" and "dad" living separately, its pretty easy for a "tween" to play 1 parent off against the other and get a top from mum, skirt from dad and then after not seeing dad/mum for a month he/she'll give the tween money 'cos of feeling guilty.

Or shoplifting eek

Something people might find interesting (shocking! but interesting)

My mother works in the youth department of the local council and often comes home with horror stories (which always annoyed me because I was always a good kid, and she'd often treat me like I was one of the delinquents she worked with) and there was one story about a 14 year old girl who had come in to ask to see a doctor or something, complaining of a sore jaw and throat from giving too much oral sex over the weekend. fourteen, she was. And this was a few years ago now. Apparently oral was the "new sex" because there was no risk of pregnancy.
