Posted:I do know some homophobic people who use "gay" for all the purposes lots of people don't mind. But coming from them, it's more than just thoughtless.

(actual quote: "There's nothing in the world I detest more. Not that I have a problem with them or anything.")

Or, to quote a friend, "the kind of people who would've beaten the sh!t out of anyone in a pink shirt before David Beckham started wearing them".

I usually don't care much about giving or receiving pc-ness (one of my nicknames in school was "junkie" for the needles I had to carry round with me). But as has been said before, that's more around people who know me, or else after a warning not to take everything I say seriously.

Now given how easily little misunderstandings can flare up on a forum, or jokes don't come across in written form, it might be better to be a bit too careful with what you say (there's intro threads for everything else).

Are you taking the piss? Who gives a flying monkey censored if anyone takes offense at the original use of the word?

Haha smile
I give a flying monkey censored, because the current use of the word is now far removed from the original sense, and I don't really want to pi$$ anyone off.

Not because of any namby-pamby concern for the welfare of strangers, but because of the Doctrine of True Selfishness, which is the only foolproof reason for/definition of ethical behaviour, as far as I can see. Basically it says that it's subjectively a better experience when people are nice to you. And you never know when you'll need someone else to get you out of a tight spot.

Therefore it's a good idea to be pleasant to people and to take steps to not offend anyone, because then they're more likely to be pleasant to you or help you out in the future.

Love thy neighbour, but not because some religious figure or spiritual leader says so, but because it makes thy life easier, or at least it doesn't make it more difficult unnecessarily.

What I think is "gay" is when people spell gay as "ghey".

Eg: "man, that song is so ghey". It's so annoying!

If you're going to say "gay" to be derogatory, at least spell it right! GRR!

Posted:Quick transition back on topic for a sec:

I think this is an imporant issue and one I've thought a bunch about. I know I might be in the minority (which always trips me out when I end up on the liberal side of things) for my dislike of intolerance.

Two points:
1) Language is a vehicle of communication. It is not just the speaker that is involved in language but the listener as well.

A speaker can't yell "FIRE" in a crowded theater and then say "Oh, no, my and my friends just use the word "Fire" to mean that everything is OK. It's not my fault that everyone else rioted."

2) Using a group of people as an insult is insulting to that group of people. Even if a small subsection of that group doesn't mind. If I redefine "British" as everyone with an IQ under 80, I am insulting Brits even if a few of them think it's funny.

Now, both of those points have limits. Many people, including my friends, insult each other in a joking manner. I often use irony when I think that others will understand I'm being ironic.

But I think that the speaker has some responsibility within the equation.

Well, shall we go?

Ive only ever seen 'gay' used on here in a blatently ironic context, the peaple on here who do have a problem, dont use it in any kind of joking or derogotory manner, they would get a right flaming for a start.

word are defined by thier use. Not by books or dictionaries. the reason some find the term 'gay' offesive is because of its passed use, it now is a negative word.

so, we want to reclaim the word, and in so by doing reclaim our pride (groan). we cannot use the word without implying a negative, because of its past use, but we can use it in ironic context which changes the meaning radically.

so the word gay has gone from a term of hate and persecution to meaning 'a bit naff'. sure its still negative, but i prefer it and use it now.

my point is, this transformation of the word has happened though its specialised use in exactly the kind of public context we presently occupy.

if we are not saying 'gay' to be offensive, sure we can be taken as such, but the word will always be offensive if it only used as such. only by our intentional light hearted use of the word will its meaning, and thefore its capacity to offend ever change.

I have a kinda personal question for NYC and richee, are you gay? (pm will do)

peace out.
