Hi
Been doing poi for a while now and i've progressed quite well but I am having trouble mastering the 7 beat weave. My brother can do it perfectly, but he has long and skinny arms and mine are bigger. after all his tuition and my own practice I cannot phsyically bend my wrists and arms to the correct position. Just wanted to know if anyone has the same problem?

Instead of twisting up your arms and risking serious damage to your shoulder, after the 5bt stick out your fingers that the handles are on (really works better if its your pointer and middle) and let it do the last 2 beats on them

Nah, that's cheating... No finger wrapping in a 7bt rolleyes

To get into the full 7, start with the 5bt take it across the body as you would normally, un-twist until your arms are at the "open" stage, then wrap at the elbow bringing your hands up to about eye-level, then twist the wrists, as you would in a 5bt -then back across the body. Repeat biggrin

Then go for the 9bt without wrapping biggrin

I can't stretch far enough for 9 beat, I don't seem to have enough joints to manage it. Although I managed a 7 beat butterfly weave, and that hurts...

Wholly shnikiesmad2 and I thought I was crazy...I thought there might be a slight chance for double jointed people to do the 7beat ummbut a 9 beat? That is insane! Man I am really behind in the tricks...and to think that I thought I knew of most all the possable things in poi. angry

To be honest, it's really not worth learning the 9bt.
I get the extra 2 beats by wrapping my hands/fingers around each other...

Doing it whilst smiling is really hard wink

I have this problem, I've tried and I'm pretty sure my arms just won't do that. I'm pretty inflexible though, might be possible eventually. The easiest way to cheat is to wrap the chains for one beat I think.

if you let the chain touch your arm, it's not actually a 7 beat
Its actually a through wrap weave. or something along those lines. the actual 7bt weave is all about flexibility, dislocation, and being aj ninja.

I'll get there too late if I shorten my stride, I'll get there too soon if I find me a ride, I'll never move forward if I try to hide this path that I've troden one step at a time.
