Well, it took me an hour but I just about mastered it. Go me.

Firstly, I found that by leaving him with a row of 3, a row of 2, a row of 1 and an empty row (it doesn't matter which row) I could win every time. So leaving 3-2-1 automatically makes you win. This took me some time so make sure you understand every permutation he can throw at you. If you leave him 3-2-1 there is a way to "checkmate" him every time. Since I'm hungry, I'm gonna let you figure out how.

Now the question is "How do I get him into a 3-2-1 formation?"

Let's call the top row A, second row B, third row C and bottom row D...

Let him go first. He'll do one of three things:
SITUATION ONE:
He: Leaves two in row C
You: Take all of row A
He: Leaves 1 in row C
You: Leave 5 in row D
He: Leaves 3 in row D
You: Leave 2 in row B
You got him in a 3-2-1...

SITUATION TWO:
He: Takes 3 from row B
You: Take 1 from row A
He: Takes 2 from row A
You: Take 2 from row D
He: Takes 2 from row D
You: Take two from row B
You got him in a 3-2-1...

SITUATION THREE:
He: Leaves 1 in row D
You: Take all of row A
He: Takes 1 in row B
You: Leave 2 i row C
You got him in a 3-2-1...

I'm off to dinner. Somebody check my math for me since I don't have the time/desire to.

Thanks for finding that site... my brain needed the workout. Now if only my body would follow.

Hrmm... well it seems that there are a few more starting moves that he's got. He doesn't quite stick to my script as much as I'd like. But the 3-2-1 strategy is still sound.

And he will return to one of those scripts eventually. Keep trying. I'm too lazy to find them all.

Don't mind Jon, he's only joking.

Yes, thanks nyc, man that game is hard. I can totaly see the logic behind it, but he is a realy tricky devil. It would be easier playing against a person (who can make mistakes) he is good, he never makes mistakes once you get down to the wire. you totaly have to set him up.

Thanks kids. There are lots of games like this all with the same idea. There are certain formations or numbers that are automatically good and certain ones that are automatically bad. Since the computer is always going to pick the good ones you really can't make a mistake or it won't let you get the chance to make up for it.
