I just don't understand what this world is coming to at some times. On Monday, there was the terrible series of events that happened in Lancaster, PA, that led to the murder of five, innocent girls, ranging in ages between 6 to 13 ( Cnn.com Reports ). I was also informed by a teacher who will remain nameless, that an irate parent in a NJ school had to be arrested after threatening to blow up the school yesterday.

What are we coming to?

Teachers and students are just people. People like everyone around them. They are people who are either searching to better themselves or better their peers. Teachers give of themselves to impart knowledge and wisdom to their students. And students? Especially in both of these cases, they're just children. What are we coming to when the schools are no longer safe in America, when teachers and students are needlessly and mercilessly gunned down.

.... however, I have digressed from my point.

If you know any teacher in the world, hug them. You don't need to tell them why. You don't need to care. Just go hug your teacher. Show them you care. If you really don't like your teacher, you can always use this as an opporunity to freak them out and keep them on their toes. But go on, hug your teacher. Give 'em a great, big bear hug. Just make sure you don't get the teacher into trouble for getting a hug.

If you don't want to hug your teacher, just show 'em some small appreciation. Go on. It'll be good for you and them.

On a side note: Out of curiosity, since I haven't really heard anything about school violence around the world... is this something isolated to America, or this occuring in other countries? Is it just us?

"So long and thanks for all the fish."

re: your side note... I can't speak authoritatively... but I don't believe we've had any incidents like that in oz... and I'd like to think that it'll stay that way

I don't know any practising teachers... but I know a couple people training to become one... does hugging them count?

It seems to be running rampant doesn't it?

My mom was a teacher for 35 yrs and says that even if she were able, she'd not want to go back to it in this day and age!!!

Can't say as I blame her!!!
Scares me every time I have to leave my daughter at school thinking that someone could come into her school and....

Agghhh....don't even like to think about it!
Horrible!!!

*I'll give my mom extra hugs for you all!!! She was one of the best teachers ever around here...well loved!*

.... Yeah... one of my teacher friends pointed that out to me (one who'd actually been fired over something like that). We had to change the "hug" your teacher to "show your appreciation in some politically correct form."

Alas. It's sad. a.) You can't hug your teacher (I remember hugging all of my teachers at random intervals throughout my childhood!) b.) Teachers just don't see the appreciation they rightly deserve.

I think any country that thinks owning guns and having a gun in every home is normal will always rank higher on the death/carnage scale compared to countries who take the only sensible route and make them illegal or heavily restrict their ownership/use. When it's socially acceptable to have guns in every home, your car, your purse or where ever else violence like this can oly be expected frown

Of course it happens in other countries too, no one place can totally avoid psychopaths but else where the end result tends to be far less gruesome.

That's so sad and I'm afraid that the over politically correct crew have won our governments over too and it would be the same here. I remember lining up for a kiss from our teacher when we left her class aged 8. It was a really sad day and a kiss and a cuddle helped us to get over it and move on up the school and on to the next class. Teachers should be allowed to hug kids if the kid wants to be hugged. Sometimes a hug will cure more ailments than the school nurse ever could!! frown

I was going to say that :P

TBH it bowls me over when a student bothers to say "thank you".

It's bad that we've gone so far that we can't hug our teachers, I remember doing it when I was a kid.

But there is something even worse going on. I was listening to a news report this morning and there is talk about allowing teachers and principles to carry guns. According to the report, I heard Wisconsins governor would like to see it happen.

Violence is not isolated to the US, when I was at school here in SA, i had a teacher who left her previous school because she had been held at knifepoint by a student. Another really cool teacher left our school because he was physically assaulted by another student, I also heard rumors of a teacher being held at gunpoint in another school in the area. Legislation was recently passed that allows the installation of metal detectors in some schools. These things dont happen all the time, but they do occasionally, though it mostly seems to be coming from the students side and the parents dont help much either, as they usually blame the teachers. But this is the minority, most people got along well with our teachers and had a good relationship with em smile

I'm training to be a teacher.

I'm scared.

Please hug me.

Don't be scared.

Mostly because they can sense fear.

wink

Even when I was in the ghetto I wasn't scared of school violence. There are much scarier things. Like parents. Or teaching 5 different classes that you've never taught before and know little to nothing about.

Besides, most of my gangmembers only wanted to kill each other.

Hrmm... I'm not helping am I?

Have fun. Laugh about it when you get home. And don't smile til christmas.

I love my job. Always have.

And besides, with every gangfight, you get a story you can tell for years.

I had the best one ever a few years ago... Glad I had witnesses or I wouldn't have believed it myself...

Just remember, you can't save them all. The best case scenario is that you help a few.

I just got an email from one of my 'at risk' kids. He just graduated engineering college and sent us a 'thank you.'

And if that doesn't make it all worth while then you're in the wrong profession. smile

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

{hug}

Don't set anyone on fire. That's generally my first rule. But I'm a science teacher and periodically I tend to break it. I've never killed a student yet, although the thought does occasionally cross my mind wink

Assignments are a load of old granny knickers, do what you have to in order to pass, but don't sweat it.

Eat well, sleep lots. Take vitamins and Echinacea, children are dirty and carry diseases.

Befriend your mentors when in schools, they can help you lots, and write your references. Ask questions, lots of them, there's no shame in not knowing what to do, and teachers are good at helping!

Be extra friendly to your support staff, they can save your ass or hang out to dry on a whim.

Plan lots, teaching is 10 times harder when you are doing it off the cuff, don't expect to be able to do that for a couple of years. Make sure every lesson has lots to do, and contingencies in case that doesn't work. I tend to break it down into 10-15 minute activities. Keep the pace up, and they don't have time to cause trouble.

Steal resources. Every school you are at, keep a folder of useful worksheets/ideas schemes of work etc, so you can build up a really good collection. Ask other teachers and support staff about resources.

Be enthusiastic even especially when you don't feel it. Praise lots, sometimes you need to praise a kid for simply turning up, because it's likely to go downhill from there. Have high expectations, and let the students know and understand them. Try being a little unpredictable, in fact try being a lot of things, the great thing about PGCE is that you not only get to see *a lot* of teaching styles, but you can also practice a few different ones without too much of a backlash if it goes wrong.

I do smile, even before christmas, but my students learn very quickly that this can turn into shocked disbelief as they start to step out of line, and into venomous revulsion if they really cross the line. My mood swings are fairly notorious, but it means they are walking on eggshells all the time wink

If you are going to be tough, mean it, you have to follow through. Kids can sense fear, but they can also sense impotence. Make sure you know the school's consequence system and show your students that you are prepared to use it. Always use warnings, never make an empty threat.

Most of all, enjoy this year. You are allowed and expected to make mistakes, there are people about to rescue you if it all goes wrong, you learn so quickly that you get to be really proud of yourself.

Yeah more guns......more.....MORE!!!
And if the kids come back with even more guns, get bigger guns, with more bullets, that shoot 'harder' and maybe spreay further. And then when the kids catch up get rocket launchers.....mmmmmmm...rocket launchers, then to get ahead teachers could teach direct from their anti personel tanks. Perhaps they should just get sub machine guns for the restless kids now and save a lot of time.

Don't these govenors realise that MORE guns doesn't actually fix the problem, it only temporarily and occaisionally fixes the symptoms of much bigger problems??!?!?!
