Posted:Okay...for the 3rd year in a row I have received an email from the Wife Swap casting director. They want my family to be on the show.

I find it laughable. I have one of *the* most normal families on earth.

Why am I bringing it up? This time they offered me $20,000 and the decision is up to me.

Yes, I am aware that television makes the participants look, well...stupid.
But it might be fun.
And it's 20 grand.

What do you lot think?

Its one of the reasons why i said no to the UK version of this programme as from past experiance and what i have seen they tend to 'mock' anyone that has an 'alternative' way of life. With people the way they are, i.e rather narrow minded, the out come of of the show i fear would have more of a negative affect especialy on my children who in the past have been told by school that "Paganism isn't a real religion of a real set of beliefs as it was just made up by the media, mainly hollywood" *sigh*

Posted:.... I'm disappointed in myself.

I'm normally at least mildly articulate and collected in my thoughts. But I've already deleted this post two or three times. And, then, it hit me, while looking at a blank screen. It was so simple. It was sitting right in front of me the whole time, in fact. My casino card from the day at Atlantic City (I went to wager $10 for a friend of mine in hopes of winning big to help pay for travel fees for them).

I understand what you're saying GothFrogette, that there is the distinct possibility and, in truth, more of a probability, of it turning into a mockery of an alternative life. But, it is a chance, a bet, a gamble, a stab at casting some light on what has been a rather curious subject of a lifestyle. I was thinking of some way to best put that when I looked at my casino card.

Sometimes, when you gamble, you lose, but you have to place the bet if you want any chance at the pot.

Posted:yeah i had the thought of "maybe i could start to get people to realise that we are not evil devil worshipers and thats its nothing like what you see in Buffy, Charmed, The Craft etc etc" i have seen british programs where others have tried to do this and failed. the narrater takes the P as after all it makes great TV! and thats the most important part to them. i would have no control over he editing and do not trust the media to portray my way of life correctly which is why i said no.
i do understand where you are coming from and maybe if it was just me then i would be willing to take that gamble, but not when my kids are involved. They get enough hasstle as it is for being 'different' and following our beliefs. They are very strong though and do me more than proud with how they deal with things. Its hard but they do it,they understand that every one can have their own opinions, beliefs etc after all its whats on the inside that matters not what they look like or believe. They don't change the type of people they are just to please the narrow minded members of society.
Oppps sorry i side tracked, i do that when i start talking about my kids *Is a very proud mum* ubblol

Posted:Gnor, that was my thought.

GothFrogette, Noah is my biggest reluctance in all of this. I agree.

The pagan thing isn't an issue. They don't know it. I am not someone who keeps a room on the side and does ritual over everything in my day. Chances are, unless they looked hard at my jewelry, they would never even know.

The more we discuss it on this end, the novelty of seeing what they would do, and/or make me out to be, is very funny.
The money would be awesome.

However, we are more and more coming to realize there is nothing they can do to us that would be cause for good tv.
Hell, Erik Sprague (Lizardman) is a friend of mine. I hang with people who spin tassles, staple things to themselves and in general make fools of themselves as a living. I design tattoos. Our families are conservatives with strong opinions and alot of prayers. PWB is a 9-5 developmental engineer for Xerox, a total geek. And when not performing, so am I. I put together events. I go to Parent Teacher things and am the loudest person cheering the kids on at school events.
We live a very normally executed life with abnormal tendancies.

ubbrollsmile I don't have any kids. Sorry. I'd forgotten to take that small, teeny-tiny, ABSOLUTELY GIANT factor to the show. Me, were I to actually have a husband and able to swap, I'd just be worrying about Barry [the cat] and Harley [the snake]. My thought process was more like "how much trouble could one person get in with a cat and relatively small python? I they're the opposite of me, the cat will just ignore 'em, and they'll just leave the snake int the cage."

Pele, on a side note, I have to ask, is Mr. Sprague really as nice and cool of a person as he seems? I've never had the chance to meet him, and I've always wanted to!

The snake (goldie), the bearded dragon (harly), the cat (joujou) and the guinea pig (snowflake). Hmmmmmmmmm.......
It's food for thought too.

As for Erik, he's a geek like me. lol He is nice, very helpful to those who want it but also very guarded about the biz like most of us, so alot of people think he's snippy. I've never had that with him. Just random silliness.

Pixiejester, I had made a reply and evidentally it didn't go through when I thought it did. Crap.
So...

Attempting to recreate a previous response...
NYC, that guy is funny. He must have been wildly insecure to start out with to believe any of that stuff. And as for the school thing, that is bs. All of that gets outlined in a contract ahead of time because they are actually not allowed to do things that will be disruptive to a life overall, or risk the contract being void in court. I think he is just looking for "easy" money. Or is a pansy.

And as to how they found me.
A couple years ago they did a blanket thing on a sideshow performers group.
Last year I was on discovery channel, the sideshow group and they asked the admin of the group for possible candidates and he pointed at me.
This year was a carry over from last year, plus I guess the person was at a gathering of sideshow folks.

I would never, ever put my name willingly on such a list.

I have a hard time answering questions like "What's so-n-so like?" They just are who they are. He's just Erik. *shrug* He's married and intelligent and goofy and we mostly talk online about business stuff. We've worked the same shows and been at gatherings and such. He's just him. He's not weird or anything. When he's "on" obviously he's different.
I dunno. I think I have a photo of him and I at a tat con we did in Syracuse a couple years ago. It's in my gallery.

Anyway, I wrote a letter to the casting director.
So..we'll see what happens.
I'll keep you all informed! wink

With someone like yourself with such a strong personality, you'd probably have them all following your direction in no time.

Go for it!!!

I'm the one that gets all the rest of the parents going at my daughters games. She's 11 and a pee-wee cheerleader. I break out with the Xena yell a couple of times and pretty soon the rest of the parents start to at least participate. Then again there are the ones who just look at me like I'm crazy. I don't care!!! I have fun and it's time spent for my daughter so... nana.

I figured as much, silly! If I was anything like my ren faire character (a rather prim and proper lass), I would probably end up killing myself or others.

I was just always curious to meet both him or the Amazing Enigma to compliment both of them on their tattoos, as well as getting to see their body art up close and personal. Alas, I've never been anywhere about your friend and I completely missed my opportunity to catch the show at Seaside Heights when the Enigma was around.

G'luck with the Wife Swapping!

..... just leave explicit notes with all of your pets and make sure your family knows exactly how to take care of them so you don't run any potential risk of your swap messing with your animals or handling them in an inappropriate manner (*#1 to get bitten by any animal)..... and maybe hide some of the fire toys...... and all of the fuel.

I think if we make it through the next screening round that and we get a contract, I intend to make sure that damage to personal property is prohibited and that the handling of exotic pets is as well. We're really strict on such things anyway.

Well, before you compliment them on their tats, look at them first. Neither is actually very good and really look like a child who couldn't fill in the lines (imo). And I am not impressed with Enigma personally at all. He is not nearly as nice as Erik and for the love of all that is beautiful in the world do not let that man tattoo you. I design for a tat studio. Last time Enigma swung though town he tatted about 10 people and 6 of them came to our studio to be fixed, 3 of which had horrible infections. Anytime I have encountered him he has acted as if you should feel priveledged to meet with him. All mho of course.

Family and I are still debating the wife swap. I will give her my number and all but Noah and his friend have been hysterical about what they would do should we get on it. It is sooooo funny, that it is worth the debate.
biggrin

And, oh no, I would never hastily allow someone to tattoo me! Unless maybe it was Michael Parsons.... but I've seen his work up close and personal. PyschoTattoo2 was within walking distance all three places, so I've got to drool over his sexxy, but rather pricy work.

If the Enigma is as you say he is....maybe it is for the better that we missed his show. Alas. Such are some people in this world.

Posted:I watched an episode of American Wife Swap when they had an 'alternative' family (of the eco warrior variety) swap wives with a 'conservative' family (of the filthy rich capitalist variety). The alternative family didn't fare too badly with the editing. It kind of overemphasised the alternative family's avoidance of using cleaning products with chemicals in and overdramatised their lack of cleaning, but by the end of the show I was thinking I'd much rather live with them than with the money-hungry, narrow-minded, emotionally dead people they swapped with.

'Alternative' husband made some good points about how their lifestyle was hard but necessary for the good of the planet. 'Alternative' woman made conservative man cry near the end as he realised how ungrateful he was for everything his wife did for him. It was quite cool.

My friends always told me that American Wife Swap was fake and the families were all actors working to script. I always kind of hoped it was real, just because it's often quite extreme!

Good luck Pele, let us know how it goes! I think if you just be yourself and keep true to yourself you can't go far wrong!

They need 2 weeks, not 6 days as I was originally quoted.
There are all these interviews and such.

I simply can not dedicate that much time...what with the new shows launching, the new job and the possibility of opening a new dance/art studio as well....

It's way too much.
