A few weeks ago, I applied to go to Japan to do a short course with uni, but my application didn't make it though...

Until tonight when I got a call from my Japanese lecturer (And I can tell you, hearing your Japanese lecturer speaking to you in Japanese on the phone when you aren't excecting it is a tad wierd!)

And there was a cancellation from the program....AND I WAS THE TOP OF THE WAITING LIST!!!!! I GOT IN!!!!!!!

i think i failed a japanese test this morning (actually, when i heard her voice i thought she was calling me to tell me i failed it) but this accaptance is totally what i need to kick me in the arse for this subject and pick up my motivation again!

Me = so jealous, and hungry. I developed a bit of a manju habit when I was in Japan *drools*.

I went to Japan for 2 weeks. Strange place indeed

You have to go and check out the Nihon Ki-in and learn go. (I'm a go nut- It's the greatest game there is)
And the touristy stuff like the temples at Niko
And the Nihon Ki-in, but read a good book on go first
try- "The magic of Go" by Cho Chikun
or if you're feeling cocky
"Lessons in the fundamentals of Go" by Kageyama
He'll knock you down a peg or two.

A word of warning- the Japanese are actually quite racist. The word for westerner is "Gai-jing" literaly meaning "outside person" but it's kind of like "nigger". They tried to change it to Gai-goku-jing but not very sucessfully. You'll hear it all the time, but bear in mind that it's not nice. Also almost all foreigners are in Tokyo, you'll get odd looks indeed out in the countryside.

Oh and go and see some Sumo Wrestling if you can- that was the most fun I had. I still maintain that Sumo is the best spectator sport

I had a friend try to teach me go. i never got into it tho.

I remember last time I was in Japan hearing people call me a "gaijin" but thinking I didn't speak Japanese - they got a nasty shock when i glared at them letting them know I understood! ubblol

Something I find difficult about Japanese is the fact that I will never pass for a native because I simply don't look like one (unlike when I was in Romanian and noone was the wiser)
