I'm booked to go to Australia in October, for.. well.. at least a year.. and I'd like to meet up with any spinny type people around.
I know it's a big place, but I have no plans and no idea where I'm going, so if anyone could tell me good places to go- festival or meet up info would be great!

Of course, offers of sofas and floors to sleep on would also be very much appreciated biggrin

I'm starting off in Sydney, predictably.

Ok here we go:

Sydney doesn't have the biggest scene in Oz at all.. though there are [Old link]

Brisbane: Be there any full moon for [Old link] or any Monday night for [Old link]

Be at Woodford Festival between Christmas and new year. There is a dedicated venue for spinners and lotsa good shows and music/artsetcetc. If you cant make Woodford, Confest is cool too. (not that I've ever been, I'm always at Woodford... wink )

Other spinner friendly Festivals include:

The other Confest, trance festivals like Earthcores in Nov/December, Rainbow Serpent (Victoria end of Jan), Exodus (Northern NSW in Jan) and there are heaps of bush doofs and assorted tribadelicas..

Adelaide has an [Old link]

Melbourne has [Old link]

there is a Circus Festival in Tasmania in Feb and

Perth has nice people too! (Gnor...hug)

Going next week.. ooh.. getting all excited now..

Is the weather really as hot as my Aunt's claiming, or is she just being a shameless exaggerator?
Any suggestions of where to go? I really don't have a clue what I'm doing.

Its not so hot in Adelaide and Melbourne yet, but I hear its much much hotter in Sydney and Brisbane.

I was overwhelmed at just how big the place is. You do realise that you can fit ALL of europe into Australia dont you? Its almost the same size as America!

I don't actually belive in America, so I shouldn't have a problem with that..

I've flown over part of it on the way to NZ.. Looked at the map, thought 'Oh good, we're at Australia, nearly there', and it was something like another 6 hours.. and that was just going over part of it.

So, are you here yet?

Your aunt is probably not exaggerating. Whether she is shameless I can't say.

It does get hot here indeed. And being, as has been spotted by the observant if slightly stunned UCOF, a huge continent; it is considerably hotter in some places than others.

It can be 0 in Hobart and 35 in Cairns. In some places it can be both these in one day. And there seems to be something about the hotness here that tourists find extra hot..sometimes the humidity, sometimes the UV burn that comes from ozone depletion. Take it easy and drink a LOT of water.

As for what to do and where to go, you have been given plenty of hints and clearly know how to use the internet, so get on with it!

Oh yeah and one thing not to do is just go round backpackers and spend your whole time pissing on with pasty irish and bingin brits. Nice people I'm sure but you can meet them at home... wink

Go fruit picking or something and get away from the coastal tourist track...

Make sure you spend some time in Byron Bay.
Its the place i first picked up the poi.
theres a couple of good poi shops and heaps of likeminded people.
fireshows at the bars and a few places where you can get free lessons.
Not to mention the great beaches, great surf and a realy chilled out hippy vibe goin on.

Live life in a spin!!!

That's exactly where I am!- Byron Bay..

I just came on here to ask if there was much of a poi scene round here.. heh. wink

By the way, my aunt was exaggerating- she was talking about Sydney, and from what she said, I should have just come in a bikini or I'd die of heat exaustion.

Yeah bloody hell, it is cold eh. Incredibly cold for this time of year. Brrrrr. Not normal.

And well if you're in Byron you've probably already realised what an over rated place that is too. Used to be somewhat as Live in a spin described, but these days it's more about corporate coffee and pissed backpackers than anything chilled or hip. Every creative person I know who ever has lived there has been driven out by the overpriced everything or the zealous antibusking rangers... the Arts Factory is about the only place still doing anything much. Say hi to Duncan or Kyle if you pass through there....

Hey, if you want to see the bush come and visit me in Alice Springs. (Don't worry about a map, it's right in the middle). i run a small backpackers hostel (with a pool if you catch fire!) and there are plenty of jobs out here. But beware, it's getting hot, hot, hot!!!
I do poi (my absolute favorite toy), staff (well, it's turning), double staff (just getting into it), hula hoop (a little)... Give me a call at Alice's Secret if you are interested or PM me.
Hope to see you here and have fun until then.

Do you know about the[Old link]?
That is on pretty soon and the thread about it (via the llilnky) tells a bit about other Tassy happenings.
For HoPpers, Mr Majestik seems to be the Main Man down there...
Good luck and hope you are meeting lots of the cool Melburps. (Don't mind Bender wink)

Hmmm.. I really need to get organised in some way..

I didn't manage to go to the Melbourney type meet yet, I was staying with rather straight rellies who would probably have disapproved, not that I'm implying anything about you all.. :P

Come to think of it, I've not made it to any poi meets at all yet.. I definitely need to get organised.
