Knowing my current luck, there is a thread already in existence about this... which my search missed... (let me know...)

For all those who love shooting stars...

THIS WEEKEND .....

Saturday to be particular, there is a Perseids meteor shower. Look to the northeast, with the best veiwing in the hours before dawn.

Perseids are said to be a fairly prolific shower orginating from the Perseid cloud and happening every year starting from about mid July (peak activity on August 12th) They are called Perseids because they appear to be coming from the constellation of Perseus, and produce about 60 meteors a hour. The full moon will unfortunately dull out the stars.. but I saw an absolute beauty of a shooting star last weekend, despite the light sky.

I havent found a very good website to keep an eye on the happenings in the sky.. I'm just trying to gather information from all over the place. I will try to keep this thread updated.. for there are some even more prolific showers coming up.. and a partial lunar eclipse. So maybe we can share information here.....

andrea, I have seen that phosfluresence (?) and it is more amazing than well wow! lots of things. Sometimes you just see specks of it on the beach but once, it was totally mind blowing.

I was sitting one night on the deck of my Nana's house, which backs onto a big river mouth in NSW, and a small boat zoomed down the river. I was intrigued to see the wake was glowing green. I went the the water's edge and everything was twinkling. I put my hand in and stired it about - It was like fireworks in the water. The most beautiful thing! Then I splashed the surface, and everywhere the droplets fell, green light and sparkles radiated dramatically.

It is truely a rare and wonderful experience to see something like that. I havent researched it.. sometimes the Phosflurous is there, sometimes not. Some people say the moon has an effect on it. Should look it up

Saw it down in Cork about 15 years ago, waves exploding with silent light as they crashed on the shore, skimmed stones leaving blasts of light in their wake....very nice...

anybody looked it up yet? ( me, lazy and tired) Wondering if it is going away, or how long it will be there?

Want to go back tonight or tomorrow, but dont want to get people excited and then find it has vanished!

Pogo, I am on an island off the west coast of Canada...
I have seen it elsewhere, Thailand, often, but never to this gorgeous extreme! And I had no idea it was like that here! Generally the ocean is freaking cold, so I rarely dive in in the middle of the night!

The glowing whale is beautiful...

sounds love-ly andrea... and without pulling out a map, relying only on my limited knowledge of geography, it also sounds rather... remote

need to find some local phosphorescence...

I didnt even see the new \"stuff\" in this thread till now, cos I have been neglecting my HoP spammage responsibilities...

I know I should be punished for not being here, but you should send this stuff around on a mailing list, pip... ok, I would probably forget just like u did, but at least I would have had a shot at it!!

I cannot believe the faerie shop is still in paddington (assuming it is still the same one)... ok... now you would be wondering how I know there is a faerie shop in paddington...

*looks furtively around, hoping no-one notices*

there used to be a bagel shop right next door, but I think it is no more... frown I ubblove fresh bagels...
