The question we discuss on our forum (or at least the latest one, each time those who refuse the term "spinning" realize they're wrong, they find a new argument against it) is about the term "spinning" on its own : according to some people, English speakers (put roughly, you ) NEVER use the word on its own when they mean the actitivy in general. Is that true ?

Doesn’t (1) refer to the action whereas (2) refers to the activity ?
Or can (1) refer to the activity ? but in this case, don’t we have to be carefull because:

more common is the use of a colloquial device:
an action (described by an adjective) can be exressed by implying possession of the the noun equivalent of the adjective:
"bathing" = "having a bath"
"drinking" = "having a drink"
"spinning" = "having a spin"
