yay! A thread on Anti-Spin weaves!

So I was just thinking about them. Simian can probably think better about them, but I was bored so I posted this.

(I think) the default anti-spin weave is the anti-spinised equivalent of doing constantly translated isolations. ie: you're just isolating in one direction in front of you, doing the normal one bit iso, and constantly translating the staffs. (changing the ends that are 'together')

Sometimes my anti-spin weave has a few extra beats in it, as if you were folding the staffs under your arms in the 'non-anti-spin' version of the weave.

So after a comment by ben, I thought about the other obvious variations on anti-spinning isolations:

Anti-spinning the 'giant' staff created by the isolation. (very difficult, unless you have small sticks / huge arms.)

Anti-spinning just one of the staffs and getting the other to follow it. (Kinda weird feeling, not sure if it's visually effective yet.)

Moving the center of the isolation in a circle and anti-spinning on that.

Anti-spinning both of them and just having a quarter / half rotation of isolation in the 'middle' of the movement.

oh wait, I think the caffiene just ran out.

Questions: What about butterfly?

if the pattern is flat to an outside observer (i.e. it like this ++) and you do it in the same plane, but describe the crosses in the order of an infinity sign, to maintain antispin motion, you would have to reverse the direction of the stick's spin on the middle horizontals.

 Written by: me, again yesterday

tracing an infinity sign with your hand would mean mean that you travel round one half of the pattern clockwise and the other anticlockwise.

unless you reverse the direction of spin of the stick as you go from one side of the infinity pattern to the other, one half will be spin and the other antispin, no?

i knew i knew what i was going on about wink

let me quickly tell you how to make the stick.

Get linux.

Install Inkscape.

Make a black box, copy it.

Make a thinner longer outlined box. Copy it.

Make a thinner longer handle box.

make a very thin very long stick box.

Arrange as appropriate.

Add a small red box for the center line.

Colour code your wicks if you want.

pentagon, triangle and other gon's to follow at about 5-6pm.

So I was thinking about this on the train down to leeds.

The box anti-spin. The staff makes a box, or the hands follow the path of a box, or the wicks can follow the path of a box. (I don't think I've posted a picture of that one yet.) I think the box anti-spin I posted is more like a box isolation. and the wicks following the path of a box is also a form of box isolation. (Cos I can't figure out in my head how to anti-spin my arm in relation to the box.)

triangle should work out the same way:

anti-spin: your hands following a triangle.
anti-spin: the wicks following a Y / fluz capacitor line shape.
isolation: the wicks following a triangle.
isolation: the staffs making a triangle.

oooh cool

of course, you could do that "box wicks" pattern with a true antispin circle rather than a curvy diamond, just like you pointed out with the "cross wicks" pattern

and mr cantus, you can tell tobi that munky says 3-point or 5-point antispin is equal in validity to 4-point antispin, and greater in difficulty.

I'll have to draw a picture of the curvy diamond cross anti-spin in order to understand that. Does it depend on the size of the pattern in relation to the staff?

meg - both methods of shape isolation are related to staff length.

the main difference being that the longarm versions depend on your arm length in relation to the staff length/pattern too.

"to get the isolation to work in both dimensions (horizontal and vertical) using a long arm circle, it is necessary for your stick to be *exactly* twice the length of your arm (from shoulder to palm)."

*temporarily distracted by a shiny pebble, monkey veers the conversation off course at a tangent, dangerously close to the muddy ditch...*

I was thinking... it'd be nice to have a short-form verb for:
"rotating an object and manipulating the centre-of-rotation in such a way as to produce strange, interesting or startling patterns."

cos at the moment people are often using "anti-spin", which is really quite a particular definition, and doesn't cut it. Particularly if you're not manipulating the centre in a circle in the first place.

something related to the op-art movement would be fitting, as the aesthetics of anti-spinny business are very similar.

we have to think about this carefully.
It can have TERRIBLE ramifications if a bad name is chosen.
For example, see "Wibbling"
*shudder*
