In a few weeks I'm planning on lighting up for the first time at a festival where there will be a few experts and i'll have people to spot me (Sacred Harvest Festival in MN). I ordered my fire poi yesterday, and they should be arriving in the next couple of weeks.

Other than practicing a bunch with the new poi to get used to them, and basic fire safety, do you all have any advice for me? Thanks much. weavesmiley

*dont smoke while dipping your poi

*look both way before crossing the street (serious u wanna make it to the festival dont you?)

*practice with your eyes closed i find it makes my co-ordinatio better, this may not work for every one.

*dont worry about it, its gunna be fun biggrin

Hmmm...fire safety....you would think a site named 'Home of poi and fire twirling' would have some sort of fire safety advice on there...

It's not really as scary as you think it is. You'll realize this at about a minute into your first burn.

I was worried all throughout my first burn as I wasnt good at spinning so was nervous... the sound was great, but I was nervous.

So, like anything, don't lose your fire virginity until you are ready and you know it in your heart and your head

I was nervous first time I lit up too. I felt like if I stopped spinning I would hit myself! My advice would be just to remember that if you hold your arms out to the sides and stop moving them your poi should stop moving too, if they're shorter than your arms you're quite unlikely to hit yourself.

Just remember you can stop moving any time it feels a bit much. Oh, and stick with the stuff you can do well rather than things you're still getting the hang of.

Happy spinning! weavesmiley

i'll keep that in mind about the staying fire safety concious. unfortunately, i'm not going to have much chance to light up except at friends houses that live outside of the city.
i went to a friends house on monday and tuesday, we both lit up both nights, together and seperately. that was fun. don't worry, we had spotters, and her mother made us soak our hair first, so, it was all good.

well,
her mother went out to get fuel and some groceries,
but she bought liquid potpuri instead of lamp oil by mistake.
we didn't realize it until i had completely soaked my poi with it.
they wouldn't light of course, and i decided to air them out for a while.
one nice thing is that my poi smell like vanilla now smile

anyways

my point is,
i couldn't get them to light,
so my friend offered to let me use hers.
they were a different weight, style of head, and diff length, so i practiced for a few minutes, but they felt right so i lit them up.
did i mention that at this point they had run out of regular
lamp oil, her poi heads are about twice the size of mine, and we used tiki torch fuel because we didn't have anything else??

mannnn those were some BIG and HOTTTT flames.

that was fun.

i'm aware that you really shouldn't use tiki fuel.
i got it.
ohhhh but that was fun.

i'm thinking i'm going to get another set of poi when i've got the money. i want them to have larger heads, because the set i've got is really light.

that's my story.

Yeah.... I was going to warn you.... my best advice to you is to do your first spin with people you know and trust well, both trust to be good safeties for you and trust not to make fun of you in case you have a first burn like me.

*giggle* I'm still getting made fun of for the half an hour of, "It's SO hot."

"So long and thanks for all the fish."

No, I wet my hair too... It's over a metre long at the moment tho, nearly down to bum-length! So I have to wrap it up in a wet cotton headscarf-thingy.

It may be a little overboard, but I'd be very sad if I burnt my hair off and plus I know hair burns really quickly!

I've got a mate with very long hair who tucks his ponytail down the back of his shirt to spin.

i dunno it seemed a little overboard because i have short hair, i mean it's not even shoulder length, but better safe than sorry and i'd rather wet my head than not be allowed to spin at their house.
