Having just got back from a pub where at least two thirds of the people there were smoking like chimneys, I'm really pissed off.
Not only are my eyes still stinging, but my throat is feeling really raw and my clothes, skin and hair stink of cigarettes.

What I'd really like to know is why? Why do people, knowing full well that it makes everything around them stink and that it's killing them slowly, still smoke?

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

It's soooo anti-smoking here, and I loooove it! No smoking in Public areas or properties, in pubs, resturaunts, etc. etc. Prices for smokes are high, and on the packages are horribly gruesome pictures of black lungs, artery squeezing, and little children with little pleading eyes with the caption of "Please stop killing us with 2nd hand smoke" or something to that affect. We have anti-smoking commercials, and sooo many programs - including in public schools, where most kids who smoke are underage anywho (tobbaco age is 19 here).

I went to a school where they wanted to ban parents from smoking in their cars as they came to pick up their kids after school. Okay, I thought that was a bit too far, but it's the thought that counts!! I very rarely come across smoking here now... It's soooooo lufferly *tear*

Here in the DC area more and more cities/towns/counties are banning smoking in public establishments and as a non-smoker I have to say that I am ecstatic about it. I hated going out with friends and coming home smelling like I had rolled around in an ashtray, immediately having to shower and do laundry so my home didn't stink. But, some places are actually considering banning smoking outdoors. That I don't agree with, it's just silly.

I am SO thankful that cigs never caught on with me, it wasn't for lack of trying...

lol that would just make me and my friends laugh and spark up a ciggerette, oh wait I mean fag (may as well let the americans laugh eh)

I love holding a fag, and I love the smell (as an ex smoker) that pretty little plume of smoke that floats upwards and gently into the nose. Yum! Everytime I walk past a smoker i take a great big sniff lol

I think that smokeing is like drinking in a pub, its just whats done. Its pretty crap that you cant smoke at the bar anymore couse the staff winge about the smoke. Dont work in a pub then thats what I wanna say to them, smokeing in pubs has allways been done, so its your own problem if you choose to work in a place where people smoke, its not like they suddenly started getting smokey AFTER you got the job.

That's not a reason to keep pubs smoke filled places.

Sometimes we just realise that we're better off without stuff that we've done for ages.
We don't cane our children anymore, and we don't hunt foxes either, why shouldn't we just stop smoking in pubs?

I find it disappointing how, as smokers, we are now being discriminated against. You wouldn't ban drinking, which in many ways and quantities is just as harmful as smoking. I think its utterly unfair that we 'smokers' will have no-where to smoke in 10yrs or so. There should be designated pubs and restaurants specifically for smokers, just as there are for non-smokers now.

I find it hilarious how the Government is banning smoking publicly, but haven't as yet increased the age of purchase on cigarettes. If it is such a dangerous habit as they suggest, why not make the age limit 21 for cripes sake?!. And where on earth the Government has found its statistics to back the public banning is odd to me, as the percentage of people who I know smoke out weigh those who don't 70-30.

I love smoking....i mean i really really enjoy it. But just because you don't like it, does not make me a bad person one bit. It maybe fun to join on the band-wagon of smoking hatred.....but just remember, SMOKERS ARE PEOPLE TOO!!

I don't think smokers are bad people, they're entitled to make their own choice as to if they want to smoke or not.

I just object to having my choice of clean air removed by those too inconsiderate to smoke somewhere else.
It's all great to say that I can go somewhere else, but there are no pubs around where I live that are no smoking, so the choice is either to go to the pub and breathe in the smoke, or not go to the pub at all.
I'm sure you'd agree that it's a pretty crap choice, but it's one that's forced upon me by people who smoke.

Before I stopped going to one of the popular pubs in town, I'd come home coughing with streaming eyes. How is my discomfort due to some else's smoke anywhere remotely near fair?

Can I just ask... those who want smoking banned in all places... how do you feel about smoking marijuana - or do you put that in a different bracket?

Because any legislation that prevents smoking in public places will make it more difficult to legalise weed.

I'm not making any judgments... just asking out of interest...

I used to be one of those people who smokers hated. I hated smoking and made sure every smoker knew that I hated it. I coughed obviously. I pretended I had asthma and asked people to stop (the almost joke of it now is that I have since developed excersise induced asthma for whatever reason). My last Australian boyfriend smoked and he wasnt allowed to smoke with me around. And if we were together all day, then too bad for him. If he did want to smoke, he got the guilts really bad and always bought me something (i know that sounds terribly high maintenence on my behalf, but I swear Im not THAT high maintenence!)

But since my 6 months in Romania, my attitude has changed. I am much more apathetic towards it (is that the right word?) Out of my entire group of friends, only me aand one other didnt smoke. That includes one of my 15 year old students. Did I like to see it? No. I didnt. But I learnt to get over it very quickly. I developed a smokers cough living in Romania, and yes, knowing that passive smoking is worse scares the hell out of me especially with the amount of sport I play in Australia. But their attitude was different and I was fitting into their community so I learnt to accept it. Accepted it to the point where my Romanian boyfriend smokes and I would kiss him while he had a cigarette in his hand because it was usually the only time he had a few minutes break from work. I didn't realise my dramatic change in attitutde until I met up with my parents in the UK and had them complain about the smallest amount of smoke that I didnt even notice.

I Don't really know what my conclusion here is. I have always had the "each to their own" attitude, but I suppose I just have more of it now. I agree that non smokers shouldnt have to put up with smoky bars and pubs, but at the same time, contrary to what I used to think, smokers are human and also have their rights.

On saying that, I look forward to a non smoking world even though I know its not possible.

I knew a woman who smoked (who has since died of cancer) who, on a visit to her doctor was told "do you realise how much you cost the NHS?", to which she replied "do you realise I'm paying your wages?". It's only because the government gets so much money from smoking that fags and tobacco are still so widely available. And when non-smokers whinge about how much smokers cost them, think about all the public services that are largely funded by taxes on fags and tobacco.

I'm a non-smoker, but have a lot of friends who smoke who have smoked since they were about 12. It all starts in school when kids want to toughen up their image. Girls spend their free time in the school bogs smoking; and because of the way young girls like to hang around in groups, all of them start.

With regards to alcohol, it's undeniably a huge killer, and only so widely available because of the money that the government gets from taxation. Frankly, the legalisation of cannabis, the declassification of many class B drugs and perhaps class A's seems to make sense to me because there would be better quality control. When we went clubbing in Amsterdam, they even had pill testing stations run by police to check your pills weren't going to kill you. And the way that everyone gets so up-the-arse about weed sending you mental; just look at alcohol. No one puts a spliff in your mouth and demands that you toke. It's a choice.

I've been around smokers for years and i don't smoke; I'm not even tempted to. But that's just my choice. My friends have accepted that smoking happens in pubs, and that you'll go home reeking of smoke. If i worked in a bar, i'd be chuffed if smoking was banned from the bar area - because not even smokers would want to have secondhand smoke blown in their face all night - and non-smoking areas should be enforced, but not take over the entire place. In a way, smoke is part of the pub atmosphere......... We're alienating smokers from society, when it's socialisation that got them smoking in the first place. Smoking is definitely not anti-social: how many millions of conversations have started with "got a lighter mate?", or "can i scab a pinch of baccy?".

People can smoke if they like, as long as i don't have to. And maybe the world would be a better place if there were no smokers full stop. But that's unrealistic - it's a give and take world.

I smoke, its a bit of an annoyance having it banned in pubs, but I wont mind, as I dont want to harm the guy sat next to me. I never smoke around children, i always go outside a friends house if i want a cig, but all it is is inconvenience, it's not like i'm being forced into an Iron Maiden to have a cig is it?

Bov, bang on. I totally agree, if you choose not to smoke, then people are forcing you to smoke by being in an enclosed space and hanging round you. Ba bum.

Can I just ask... those who want smoking banned in all places... how do you feel about smoking marijuana - or do you put that in a different bracket?

Pretty much the same bracket.
I don't smoke it, but I'm not going to try and stop people smoking it, it's up to them.
Smoke is smoke, regardless of what's being burnt, I don't enjoy being stuck in an enclosed space that's filled with it.

I'm not after a complete ban on smoking, I'm just after some clean air in the enclosed areas where people socialise. Generally though, the places I'd like to be smoke free are free of marijuana smoke anyway, I don't often see people smoking anything other than cigarettes in pubs.
Ideally, I'd like the laws to be saying something along the lines of 'smoke anything you want, just don't do it inside a pub, restaurant, shop or at work'

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Why isn't streaking legal? I mean, who does it hurt? You have more of a case to ban smoking and drinking than you do to ban nudity. Makes no sense.

Actually on the topic, I don't see the point in smoking. Costs money, kills you, harms others... the list goes on. If you want to do something with your hands, why not start twirling a pen, or wear a ring you can fiddle with? If you want a nipple substitute, get a bottle.

Have all the habits you want, just not near me. This goes for drinking too, because I'm sick and tired of walking home from work at 11.30pm and having to either go down the main street (drunken gangs outside the takeaways) or the back alleys (people doing needles). How about you all just stay at home and do that sith? Why should I be afraid to walk home alone? That's why I think there should be harsher laws on drinking and smoking, cos it harms people other than those who choose to do it.

And I hate Chav parents who smoke near their kids. I don't want to see what the next generation is like, I'm moving to Africa after I get my degree...

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

Can I add perspective to this?

I'm not an asthmatic, or a hyprcondriac. I have a rolling state of injury, but I do sports which keeps me in LOTS of pain on a regular basis.

I had lived in a place where I was the only non-smoker. The only. Everyone around me smoked. I felt like I was going to vomit daily. The smell of smoke always went stright to my brain and gave me headaches. Several dinners were ruined when one person would light up, then suddenly everyone would feel the need to smoke a cigarette. One smoker isn't bad, but 6 or 7 at the same time... I didn't eat on many nights becasue of this.

Lemme see, one smoked menthols. One smoked Marlboro reds. Two smoked Camels, one smoked OPC (Other people's Ciggs), and one would always swap from Camels to Generics. If I left the room I got no end of grief about how I was ruinign their enjoyment, or I was being a "drama queen" becasue it's "only cigarette smoke". Ok, it's only my head feeling like it's being pounded on by an air hammer, leave me be.

To this day a lot of my clothing still smells like smoke after washing it for a few years. I'm happy I never stored my costumes there, as I use them for performance and I don't want to smell like cigarette smoke.

Look, if people want to smoke, fine. Do what you want. But when you smoke around me, and I turn green, don't start yelling at me about how I'm ruining your buzz. I don't eat milkbones or chow down on dog food around you, so don't smoke around me.

And if your stomach just churned thinking about that, then you know how I feel when people light a cigarette.

I'm weird. Just work through that and we'll all be fine.

The thing with smoking fags is that most cigerette smokers go crazy if they dont have their ciggies! my mates tend to get very uptight and stressed without it. However, i also know a lot of people who are very uptight for stoners!

skunk smells nice before and after lighting up, but i still don't like tobacco (burnt or not).

considering marijuana has medicinal properties, shouldn't that set it aside from cigarettes a little? (when they're considering legalising i mean).
i think limiting the number of public places you can smoke is a good idea, but it's a bit extreme to ban it altogether. if they're legalising marijuana in the UK, then it should also be limited to certain places to stop young 'uns getting involved at an early age, but stricter age-checks are needed i guess...the current alcohol and smoking age checks are pretty bad in my home area.

It makes perfect sense, it stops minors being exposed for one, and secondly not everyone wants to see a naked person when there in public its disgusting. I might walk up to you on a meet and pull down my pants and shove my c**k in your face, will you think its harmelss then? lol Ok I wont do that biggrin ubbrollsmile LOL biggrin ubbloco

Ive been lucky, I have never minded smoke. Its never made my eyes sting/water and even though I have asthma ciggerette smoke dosent and has never affected my breathing...if anything it helps it it opens up the lower parts of my lungs, Ive known other asthmatics who say this is true too.

I think its only fair that if pubs become none smokeing they should offer smokers a smokeing room (with two heavy doors to limit the smount of smoke that wofts through to the next room) Is smokeing banned in cafes and things with outdoor seating? I dont think it should, inthe open air smoke wont affect anyone unless your practicly sitting on the smokers lap.

Sure, like the kids have never seen an adult naked before... And if it's in a non-sexual context, what's the problem? It's just our bodies. Why is it disgusting to be nude? So long as they're not doing anything sexual, I don't see why people shouldn't be allowed to wander round naked (at least during the summer... biggrin). And I'm not suggesting wandering up to strangers and shoving anything in their faces. It's streaking, not molesting. wink

Damn. Off topic again.

Pubs don't neccesarily need to have a separate smoking area. What they need is decent ventilation. If the smoking areas had decent extrator fans fitted then the area isn't half as bad.
