Having just got back from a pub where at least two thirds of the people there were smoking like chimneys, I'm really pissed off.
Not only are my eyes still stinging, but my throat is feeling really raw and my clothes, skin and hair stink of cigarettes.

What I'd really like to know is why? Why do people, knowing full well that it makes everything around them stink and that it's killing them slowly, still smoke?

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Cannabis should be legalised I reckon. It's impossible to overdose on it, you can grow it in your back garden, or in your wardrobe, the only ill effects it has are if you smoke it in a spliff or a pipe then it's as bad as smoking, and if you are susceptable to mental illness it can bring about it's onset.

But to those countless thousands who smoke illegally now, who grow there own or buy off their mates, being forced to fund criminal gangs for something that they want to do... It's a harmless, non addictive activity, with almost zero crime (apart from the fact it's illegal) related to it... It makes no sense.

Legalise it, sell it over the counter, tax it, and sort it out!

As for tobacco smoking and nakedness, I'm in favour of both. within limits of course. There should be "nakedness is good" areas as well as smoking areas, and the world would be a better place. I can honestly say that if pubs were non smoking zones, I wouldn't frequent them, not out of any political leanings, but because after a couple of pints, I'd quite like to have a smoke... cos it just works perfectly. Just a good combination. If it was pissing it down, I'd hate to be drinking if I couldn't smoke...

I'm a social smoker only, with out goings of about 3 quid a week on cigarettes (2 a day on average) so I've still got my sense of smell, and yes, stale smoke is horrible. Really horrible. But that;s sortable, as you can just move the smoke with fans, and it disappates and you're sorted!

I am fully against the banning of smoking in pubs. In public buildings yes, but in public houses and inns? no way jose!

Spin, bounce, be one with the world, because it is yours to enjoy...

im not saying if you dont smoke then you cant go to the pub a lot of people in england smoke when they drink dont get me wrong
i can understand the fact that non smokers would like to sit in a non smoke enviroment.
but in england non smoking pubs have started to come about personally i would not go into on of these pubs because i like to smoke now if all pubs ban smoking it will cause problems as smokers will become discriminated againt what im saying is this pub landlords should have the right to chose weather or not thier pub should be smoking or non smoking the same as an individual that smokes or doesnt can chose weather or not they drink in that particular pub

i dont get paid to belive i get paid to destroy things

Landlords do have the choice. If you own a pub and decide you want it non smoking then you can have it. Of course there is a matter that the majority of pubs in the UK are part of a chain and the rules and regulation are set by head office so it's up to them to say if a pub is smoking or non. Most pubs that are privately owned or leased from breweries will be against going non smoking as it would alienate a lot of their customers.

Could somebody stop the room please... I'd like to get off

I just object to having my choice of clean air removed by those too inconsiderate to smoke somewhere else.

The point is that everyone knows pubs are smoking, so non-smokers know what there getting themselves into. And it is our right to smoke, just as it is yours not too!!!

Sure smoke makes peoples eyes sting and clothes smell, but you knew it would be like that before you decided on going out that night. The only people you can blame are the pubs, or the millions of people who havent opened up non-smoking pubs. And why are there so few non-smoking pubs...... because the majority of their customers are smokers!!!

Why do we have to move just because you want clean air? Asking us to move is the same discrimination as racism is to minorities. Pubs have always been smoking places, its the way its been.

Your getting your way.....smoking in public places WILL be banned, so all you non-smokers shut up whining about it, and spare some consideration for those of us about to go insane, or freeze in the winter because we cant have a fag in a pub or club (and before you say it, my uni has banned smoking, so im allowed to expree my rage)

Yes, we know that pubs will be smokey, but when there is NO ALTERNATIVE that is where I have problems. If I want to have a game of pool/snooker without smoke then I have to travel 80 miles (read: £20 in petrol money and 2.5 hours in the car) to get to the nearest Pool Hall which doesn't allow smoking. All the local pubs have tables, but I refuse to go and play a game in them because I will end up smelling like sith.

What if we want to have a pint or two, why do we have to stay at home? We're not the ones causing harm to other people.

"It's the way it's always been" isn't a valid argument. Racism was "the way it's always been" in the South of America before Martin Luther King made a stand. Does that make it a good thing?

And it's not discrimmination, because *smokers* are hurting *non-smokers*. If anything, non-smokers are being discrimminated against because many of us have no alternative than to breathe your smoke when we want to have a night out.

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

Actually, only a quarter of the population of Britain smoke. It seems to me that the minority are getting all the benefits at the moment. I'm glad it's starting to change.

That's not quite true now is it? Racism is discrimination without any real basis.
Asking smokers to be a bit more considerate because it makes me cough and my eyes sting can't really be compared to making those with black skin sit at the back of a bus.

I don't think most smokers really appreciate how much pain their smoke causes - after a night in a pub my eyes are often streaming so much that I can barely see. I cough up black goo the morning after.
Is it really so much to ask that you don't make me suffer like that every time I want to go out with my friends? Are you really that selfish?

As I've said before - I don't know of any non-smoking pubs within reachable distance from here. Spending an evening in one is not an option for me, since there are none to go to.
Therefore, I'm left with two options:
Stay at home
Go out and breathe in the smoke

Great choices there huh?

Think of it like this - if every time you went out with your friends, someone sprayed you in the face with pepper spray, wouldn't you get a bit annoyed and want them to stop?

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Yeah, but why should the non-smoker not be able to go out and socialise with his/her friends? I would find it extremely unfair if I had to choose whether or not to go out for the night because I hated being around smoke. It would mean that I lost out on a good night out because of other peoples pretty nasty habbits.

This is hyperthetical though as I've smoked for 10 years. I've finally given up now but don't really care if I'm in a smokey atmosphere or not. I'm just saying that I can see it from the non-smokers point of view and I think what you're saying is pretty selfish.

Alcohol accounts for four times as many deaths as drugs
Twice as many people are dying as a direct result of boozing too much -compared with the end of the ‘70s - according to figures released by Alcohol Concern today at its Legal But Lethal conference.
The figures reveal that the deaths of almost 6,000 people (3,800 men and 2170 women) were directly attributable to alcohol in 2001. This compares with 1498 deaths directly related to drugs.

The only reason non-smoking pubs are on the increase is because of the impending ban on smoking in pubs- without that there would be very, very few such pubs. The industry has had decades to get its act together on this matter, and has shown no interest in doing so until now.

I've been told from the mouth of an MP (take the truth value of that how you will wink ) that the costs to treat smoking related diseases is far greater than the tax that cigarettes bring in.

So next time I'm sat in on a hospital waiting list, I'll remember just what influences the terrible smokers have had on the NHS wink

Ive heard this too, and I was gutted to find out that all my years of smoking wont actually cover the treatment I will need to cure the cancer, heart disease and other ailments smoking causes.

But now the government are thinking about taking the NHS away from smokers. This is a ridiculous idea. I know that smoking is severley harmful, and you may say 'they've done it to themselves', but its still legal to smoke; so how can they possibly stop our free treatment? I dont see them banning treatment for overdoses on illegal drugs!

Ehh, I think it would be reasonable to charge a bit for things that are directly your fault. Kinda like a fine? If you smoke 40 a day for 20 years then surely you shouldn't place the entire weight of your treatment on the NHS? The same goes for excessive drinking and illegal drugs. Kinda Off topic though.

And all that sith about smokers paying for stuff with their tax... I personally wouldn't object to everyone paying an extra £3 in tax if smoking was banned completely. This solves:

The Smoking in Public causing discomfort.
The drain on the NHS.
All the deaths related to smoking.

And if you didn't smoke, you wouldn't need to go to the NHS, therefore the NHS wouldn't need as many funds, therefore that argument makes no sense. I'm far too tired.

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

Can smoking be good for you??

Health Benefits of Tobacco
Medical maverick Dr. William Campbell Douglass, who himself smokes 3 to 4 cigars a day, discussed the therapeutic effects of moderate smoking and secondhand smoke. Campbell said he did not always view smoking in a positive light, recalling his early days of practicing medicine when he would refuse to treat patients who against his advice continued to smoke.

"Smoking in moderation will not harm you," Campbell explained, citing several medical conditions, including cancer, that can be improved by smoking. In one study he referenced, women who smoked the most were found to have a statistically significant 54% decrease in incidents of breast cancer when compared to woman who never smoked. Campbell also said smoking in moderation can prevent arteries from becoming clogged, as well as relieve the symptoms of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.

Here's a link to a page explaining the Dr's views-

https://www.eflanger.com/pipes/health-tobacco.htm

I'd say that it's wise to be wary of stats, as they can be used to show anything. In particular, stats showing that non-smokers get more of some forms of cancer are open to the distortion effect of non-smokers living longer and therefore catching diseases that smokers tend not to, because they've died already.

Written by: MurfdaSmurf

"Smoking in moderation will not harm you," Campbell explained......

Even if that's true, it's well worth reflecting on the fact that smoking is one of those things that, for the majority of users, is not easily done in moderation. It's very addictive indeed, and, while very easy to get into, is, for many, almost impossible to escape.

For those genuinely interested in being healthier, there's lots of options, for example, diet modification, exercise, meditation etc, etc that will greatly outweigh any possible benefits of smoking, and be far safer.

OK, I've been trying to stay out of this discussion as i get quite wound up about it.

I believe in both sides of the argument and i also believe in choice and compromise.

I agree that if non-smoking pubs are available, so should smoking pubs and it's up to both smokers and non-smokers to conform - both parties respect the rules of the pub and no complaints. If you want to go out with your friends then you need to make a compromise on which pubs you go to - maybe one non-smoking and one smoking on a night.

I also agree that smokers should respect the non-smokers view and if they are uncomfortable around smoke then the smoker should move away. I think that all people should be considerate of other people's views.

No-one is ever gonna be 100% happy but at least people can try and make the best out of the situation. I respect my right to smoke and other's right to not have to smoke or breathe in second hand smoke. If people object to my smoking i shall take it elsewhere, the only place that i would positively go mad if people objected was my own house though!! ubblol

non-smokers need to be more vocal if it upsets them - smokers are not automatically mind readers and we need to know if you're upset so we can at least do something about it.
