Having just got back from a pub where at least two thirds of the people there were smoking like chimneys, I'm really pissed off.
Not only are my eyes still stinging, but my throat is feeling really raw and my clothes, skin and hair stink of cigarettes.

What I'd really like to know is why? Why do people, knowing full well that it makes everything around them stink and that it's killing them slowly, still smoke?

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

as a former alcoholic, i neither now take drugs or drink, occasionally have a nice pint of ale but only one, i have a toke once in a blue moon, if i feel i want to have one, but smoking keeps me remotly sane and i enjoy it.

others polute the atmosphere in many other ways, but i kick up no fuss, we are a here to enjoy life and i wish to enjoy mine.
you goto a pub, others smoke, you wernt forced to go there or where people smoke, so why be pissed at others for enjoying them selves.
prochoice....
maybe you were drunk and pissed some one off and now their sat there on some buletin board slating you for some thing you did?? who knows.

I'm not pissed off at anyone really, more pissed off that something so antisocial can become so widespread.

If it wasn't everywhere, I'd be quite happy to just go somewhere people didn't smoke, but if I want to go out somewhere with my friends, there's going to be someone there smoking, even in the no smoking sections which don't ever seem to be enforced.
I refuse to effectively be kicked out of the only places in this town to go during the evening purely because a bunch of people want to smoke - I've already stopped going to most of my previously favourite pubs because too many people smoke in them.

I really just don't see why so many people smoke at all

It's really bloody addictive. Ive never smoked cigarettes so I don't know first hand but I know it's pretty addictive stuff. I think cigarettes taste like crap personally. I smoke a tobacco pipe a couple of times a month, that's it.

well, i might be letting myself in for some criticism here, but i smoke because i enjoy having a cigarette after a day at work, its something that relaxes me and although i know it smells i agree with the other guy, it keeps me from going totally insane. most smokers are usually a considerate bunch and wont smoke if people dont want them to, although like life theres always the exception of arrogant bastards who choose to do whatever the hell they want. as for being antisocial, to me its very social, im always meeting people because of smoking, were always chucked outside in the cold rain to have a smoke and so we all huddle together in small smokers sheds having a good talk about the unfairness of not having a proper room that we can smoke in. imagine if they stopped people from smoking in pubs, alot of cafe's and restaraunts dont allow smoking and now people are wanting to ban it from pubs where men and women have smoked and drank beer for generations, i feel like they may as well ban beer from the pubs as well. i do see your point mate i really do, but to be fair, it not gonna kill you (little joke )
we all gotta live in this world together, a lil give and take is neccesary me thinks.
so to answer your question, we smoke because were addicted or because we enjoy it, take care man

Okay, you can get addicted, but that obviously isn't the reason you started smoking. You say you enjoy it - what is there to enjoy about it?

So many of the people I know who don't smoke dislike smokey pubs for the same reasons as Bovril Monkey. I don't smoke anymore but I always end up smoking in the pub because everyone else is smoking and I have poor willpower. So I have come up with the idea of smoke free pubs for non smokers. I'm sure the idea would take off. Smokers I'm not saying ban smoking in pubs instead I'm thinking of opening a new chain of smoke free pubs. Or what about bringing back the idea of having a smoke room and a no smoking room in pubs like in times of old?

Feedback anyone?

Are we nearly there yet?

i started smoking because it helped keep the stoned feeling tha igot when i smoked pot. i smoked pot because my friends smoked pot ...

eventully i quit the pot , but i couldn't stop smoking cigarettes... so for 10 years i smoked .. they made rules saying i couldn't smoke ( pretty much anywhere but at home ) and they raised the price of cigarettes to about 10 $ canadian ....

so i quit

but. if you go to a place that allows people to smoke you have no right to whine about the smoke .. thats like going to a bar and whining that people are drinking booze.

and i never really noticed the smell until after i quit ..

thats right i look like an albino ape that has had a bad day.. go ahead say something stupid... i dare ya !

I like the idea of a no smoking chain of pubs, but I don't think it would work for the same reason having a segragated smoking room wouldn't work - in every group of friends, there will be people who smoke and those who don't. By segregating one group or the other, it means you can't socialise with your friends, and I think people would rather put up with the smoking.

I don't think that's true - at least with alcohol, you don't end up with the second hand shit all over you like you do from people smoking near you. Unless you happen to be too close to someone who's had just a little too much.....

I quit 3 weeks ago (well, I've had about 8 cigs over the 3 weekends - but that's very good for me)

Why did/do I smoke?
started with pot, like a lot of smokers I know, then ended up on 20 a day.
I quit because it was costing me more than 2 round the world airfares each year

no, I'm not exagerating. 1800 sterling pounds a year.

I don't think the physical addiction was as strong as it was meant to be because I didn't go cold turkey or anything like that. In fact, after 2 days I didn't really crave badley at all.

I think the reason I smoked, above all others, was boredom. Having a cigarette is a lot more fun than doing nothing for 5 minutes.

I have noticed the smell a lot more too now. I can't believe how strong it is. No wonder my parents noticed the second I started smoking!

That's not strictly true, you can avoid the offensive drunks in a bar and I have no problem with people getting merry even though I don't drink anymore.

You can't avoid the smoke though, even in the no smoking sections the smoke just drifts in anyway, I even saw someone yesterday pick up an ashtray from the smoking section, sit down in the non smoking section and light up. Would I have a right to complain about that?

I have a friend who can't go to busy pubs in the winter because he's asthmatic and the smoke wrecks his breathing if he can't sit in the beer garden. Does he have a right to complain, or should he abandon his social life with the seasons?

Someone smoking the odd cigarette doesn't really bother me that much since I can wander away, but when the majority of people in every single place to socialise around here chain smoke, do I have a right to whine or should I just sit at home and watch tv every night instead?

I would love to see a pub having a dedicated smoking room that actually kept the smoke in. If one opened near me it would get my business straight away.
A pub with no smoking inside anywhere would be better, but I can see one of them going bust purely because most groups of friends has a smoker or two in them, and I know from experience that they'd moan so much the group would end up never going to a no smoking pub.

i can see points here: peoples health, and smelly cloths, ass holes that dont respect no smoking areas and so on.

smoking is a drug, drugs can be addictive.

i dont go in to the city at night, i cant stand to, i see beer i see violance. i think beer should be banned but that will never happen. the alcohol and tabacco industries are one of the biggest taxable products on the market world wide, if governments wernt so dependable on taxes from these sources then the world would be a better place.
if cigarettes were not widly availiable to younger teenagers although its illegal to them, then that would cut down on the ammount of smokers entering social paces such as pubs.
in my younger days being shown photo's and text books about the damages smoking can cause, never put me off starting, maybe i will stop smoking who knows, but right now i still enjoy it, and if i wish to goto a pub and smoke i will, but that isnt very often well hardly ever, i have no money, enough for 12gram of vag a week and thats my sin.

if i look at this on a whole are we just bitching about townies?.... i think we are. if so we could go one for ever.
its a big world and no one person can change it only start a trent.

Having just finished a shift at work I am pleased to see there was a box waiting from the General Manager of our chain of bar's that had 4 signs, one for each till point that said no smoking at the bar please, i was so happy i rushed and grabbed them and put them up biggrin

Supposedly within a few years it should be totally banned from public houses and manly public places, I have also heard that the smoking age will go up to 18 and by 2008 the price of a pack of 20 will be near a tenner.

Opinions please?

I dont agree with public smoking at all, if people want to smoke they shouldnt do it in a way where it can affect others in a way they cant control like out and about, its peoples choice if they want to smoke, go for it, just remember for those next to you breathing that they dont have a choice if your smoke is around they get it to.

In a way though i think its a shame that it should be 'banned' as in by law, that is as someone said earlier infringing on personal libeteries, i would MUCH rather prefer it is it would be kinda common practise not to smoke in public, like how streaking is frowned upon it could be like smoking

I also found out that a shift at a bsuy bar can be as bad as smoking 20 cigarettes due to the vast amount of smoke around considering the stats show that ina bar 76% of people will be smoking and also coupled witht he fact that rushing around i will be breathing at least twice to four times as fast as the people sitting down relaxing

well as some of you know i work ina busy bar and as a non smoker i pride myself that i dont smoke, i kidna hate the thought then that im getting it anyway, kinda nullifies the point in me not smoking frown it makes me kinda not want to work ina bar anymore but i love it too much

as a smoker I thought I would be disgusted with not being able to smoke in bars (banned Dec last year) but as it happens I agree with the original statement made here, gets in your clothes, too smokey etc. I find I enjoy a nite out more now (even though I have to go outside to smoke) than when I could just light up

Are you up for it?

I think it's socially programmed. You smoke a cigarette, and you feel "better". So you smoke while doing things, and the things you do get "better". That and cigarettes are basically manufactured now to be highly addicting, with most of the product being burnable filler anyway.

I've known people for whom the act of just LIGHTING the cigarette is enough to bring that good feeling. One woman I knew would let it just burn while she did other things, probably getting only 3-4 puffs on the average cigarette. I never did get her.

I'm weird. Just work through that and we'll all be fine.

saying "i enjoy it" is really denying your addiction.
if you say you are pro choice that is totally fine by me, you choose to smoke your first one or two or pack, but after that an addiction forms.
The thing i find comical about addiction is people can go "i'm addicted" and then laugh. i dont think many smokers fully appreciate that that exact response is the key to addiction, denial, its the trick thats been making ciggie companies millions every year for decades.
The thought that "it makes me feel better"(as far as i know) is purely psychological. the women mentioned by Socks shows that anything can be addictive, she barely needs to smoke to "feel better", just the action of lighting up makes her feel good.

umm, i dont think i really addressed the topic, oh well, my sociology teacher would give me a C for that discusion! ubbloco

I'm a smoker. I'm addicted, and I enjoy my habit. The way I see it, I dont have many vices, and this is one of the most harmless, easy-to come by vices I could choose.Because if it were not for this vice, I do believe i would replace it with another that would perhaps be a lot worse.(either for myself or those around me)

I enjoy the taste. I enjoy the time it takes to roll a cigarette, I enjoy the fact that the smokers at work get more breaks, and are forced to leave their chairs 3 times a day to smoke instead of just sitting at their desks the whole day. I enjoy the warmth, I enjoy the fact that I am forced to focus on my breathing. I enjoy the social aspect of it (I have made many friends outside my place of work, purely based on the fact that we are all smokers)

I cant even remember why I started, thats years ago now, but I think it will be a long time before I even try to quit. I can go days without a cigarette, but on average smoke about 20 roll-ups a day. I believe that i am a considerate smoker. I always ask my presant company weather it is ok or not to smoke, and do my best to keep my smoke away from other people, weather they are smokers or not. Luckily, I tend to keep company mainly with other smokers.

I understand that I get something on a psycological level from smoking, but I try not to delve too deep. It keeps me happy, and it makes most of my smoker friends happy, thats all I really need to know.

I wasnt implying that smoking was harmless by any means, just that there are a few other things that I would like to do but dont because they are a lot more harmful. It wasnt even a very good point, I was just rambling a bit.

Undoubtedly, I can vouch for that, as can most smokers. That knowledge doesnt change a thing though. I dont deny that I would be better off not smoking, but like most, I turn a blind eye to this logic and go about my day.
