Posted:First off let me admit that I LOVE Winnie the Pooh (Not the shitty Disney version, the original books and radio series). I actually have a couple of tapes in my car for long journeys but anyway, I digress.

I've always wondered why it's called Winnie the Pooh.

If Pooh is actually called Winnie, why is he called Pooh Bear?
And if he's called Pooh Bear, why is it called Winnie the Pooh?
I don't think it's a verb of any kind, apart from the noise horses make, which doesn't make much sense. Why on earth would you want to make a horse noise at a bear?
And if it is a verb, why isn't it Winnie the Bear, or Winnie at Pooh?

Tis just crazy
Any ideas anyone?

Posted:I reckon it's that his name is actually Winnie, but he is a Pooh Bear.

Since he's the only one in the hundred acre wood, they can call him Pooh Bear and not get confused.
Kind of like how piglet can be called piglet, because there's only one of him.

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Posted:christopher saw the bear ( named winnie after winnipeg, canada ) in a london zoo ( bear was the mascot of a canadaian regiment in europe during the war) .... his dad made the stories up based on the bear winnie.. i heard that it was winnie the poor bear ( because it was in a cage ) but young christopher had some problems saying poor and it just came out ..
winnie the pooh bear..

Posted:That sounds very feasible.

Thinking about it, most stories start:
"One day, Winnie the Pooh was walking through the forest..."
I think it's only the narrator who call's him Winnie.
Also;
Rabbit's a rabbit, Piglet's a piglet, Owl's an owl Kanga and Roo and kangroo, eeyore is a donkey (but heck, I call donkeys eeyores) so it's only Pooh that isn't his name.

Odd

Posted:hes called pooh because of the story when he was holding on to a balloon, trying to reach the bee hive at the top of the tree. he was holding on with both hands, and bees kept landing on his nose. to get rid of them, he had to blow upwrads with his mouth. which makes a kind of "pooh" noise.

this post has justified my whole childhood.

peace
