I went into a shop today called "Off ya Tree", known in Australia for selling bongs and other smoking apparatus, as well as cheap, rip-off band merchandise. To my initial delight, I discovered they had started selling poi and fire staffs. However, I quickly discovered that the people behind the counter had no clue as to who makes them, what materials they use, and actually knew nothing about fire safety.

Surely the people selling the equipment have a responsibility to their customers to provide information about the right fuels to use, equipment care, and basic safety precautions? Just wanted the opinions of you lot.

In agreement.

Although my first thought was "yeah, as if we don't get enough "stoner hippy" stereotying anyway" and m second was "great, people spinning stoned"

well. people spinning stoned isn't exactly something new, is it? Might be worth starting a poll "was your first firespin or firebreathing under the influence of alcohol or illegal drugs" ubblol

How can they not know who makes them? Surely there must be some name on the packaging, or they'd know where they order them from!

Apart from that, yeah, they should have some basic idea of info on the toys for people who ask. But then, do anything specialist you buy in a non-specialist shop is like that. If you buy outdoors equipment in a discounter sale, do you expect the people at the tills to tell you how to abseil?

I'm not sure if I've ever spun sober

Back on topic, if anyone's silly enough to hurt themselves with firepoi/staff it's their own damn fault it doesn't take a lot of common sense to be safe. And most of the ones you'll find in this sort of shop are glow or tail poi.

Thats true, however tha fact is that people with no clue DO buy them and people DO get hurt.
It would be different if the owners showed some willing, or made sure a fire safety dvd (nice one hop) was included with each.
Thinking about it, there may be some legal problems (there would in the UK anyway) because business owners have a duty of care towards the customers (if that makes sense).

Well, ethically I'd say that any store has the right to educate customers on any possible safety hazards of the use of their wares.

Now, this place sells drug paraphernelia. So you tell me right off the bat how good their ethics and morals are likely to be. I mean, I'm not saying that all drug users are bad people or lack morals or ethics, but this is what we in the U.S. call a "Head Shop." Not exactly the sort of place that has a reputation for being a fine and upstanding establishment.

Go figure.

Last time i was in off ya tree in adelaide, they didn't have any fire stuff, i know cuz i was asking. Funnily enough though, off ya tree in adelaide does have a pretty good reputation, mainly due to a child business "punktured" that runs out of the same premisis which is among the best peircing and tatto parlors in adelaide.

However, i do think it would be a good idea for the staff to know what they're selling... and/or, as sketch said, at least include fire safty documentation with the product.

mm yup they do have them in off ya tree in adelaide now [pixie -*- staffs, i might add biggrin and pixie poi book!].. and those guys seem much better than other places i've seen around.. and they seem to be more safety orientated than say happy high herbs which is just down the street from off ya tree..

so it's not too bad.. though i think they should make sure they keep on with the promotion of safety a bit more
