As I'm sitting here filling out my non-settlement visa (VAF1) I get to question 5.5 "Do you have any family or close friends in the UK?"

Well, I certainly don't have any family, but how do I define close friends, and what are the consequences of listing and not listing people?

P.S. If anyone takes a look at the form, you should totally read 4.16, the wording is wonderful and really most interesting, considering.

I would recomend finding you local British Consulate and disscussing the form with them, they will be better possitioned to help and explain any part of the form to you smile
Central Library should have the information on where your nearest consul is and opening times and the such (or even your local library).
Good luck with everything smile hug

They ask because they want to know if you have connections who might help you to stay in the UK permenantly(I have a Romanian friend who was denied a VISA for this reason).

I had a similar worry when I was going to the UK (worried about what I would write as my accommodation when I was staying with my Aunt, and was yet to buy my train ticket to leave the UK!) but my problem wasn't that; it was my Romanian VISAs. I think they assume that a lot of people going to the UK are going to have connections of some sort.

I would be a bit wary about calling the consulate. Or if you do make 100% sure you don't give them any information that may identify you. For a start, they will tell you to be honest, but if they receive a form that they suspect is whitholding information they can decline a VISA. A friend of mine was rejected from Brazil because the people at the consulate had remembered her from previous applications.

I don't want to say this to scare you, just to be wary (I am possibly over cautious after my experiences and that of my friend). Of course, the UK will receive a lot more VISA applcations than Brazil therefore they are less likely to remember. But rejected VISAs lead to more problems than anyone wants to deal with so just be cautious hug

Hence my confusion/curiosity.... because if i ask them than i have to put it on my visa form, but i don't know if i should or not.

Basically there's only one person in question, and its a question because i've stayed with him before and he's in my financial documentation, but this is all because he's friends with my (ex) boyfriend... I just have no idea if they'll be bothered by this or not and what to actually write in on the form....

ok, i can't tell you about the UK

BUT I have just asked someone who works in this field in Australia and

To come to Australia, it actually helps to say you have contacts because they can act as a means of support for you in case things go wrong. For example, if you need help with paying a bill one month they can help out rather than you needing to take a loan off the commonwealth. Or just support in general.

So what I previously said aside, yes, put on people who might fit the above description because it is likely to be a similar situation in the UK.

Any other questions PM me and I will try to remember what my source just told me!

Not exactly immigration specialist either but I have travelled.

Generally, on such forms you need to get across that you can stand on your own feet in any situation ie have funds insurances home support, that you come to the country exclusively for the reasons of your Visa type (study, tourism etc) and that you absolutely intent to leave again, with home property family ties home career etc strongly underlining this.

Hence I'd never list "close friends" there, especially not of opposite sex, as this could be interpretated as relationship, reason to stay on ...

Read the forms with a diabolic mindset about what could read between the lines and answer them so that one single clear motive of you coming is visible, that you can support yourself and that you'll leave after purpose is done.

What happens in reality during your travel is an entirely different thing ...

In this form, I like the questions 4.27 and 4.28 "have you ever been concerned in the organisation of terrorism/genocide" followed by "if yes, please explain" ... but then 9-11 pilot Atta was granted a green card in Spring 02, sent to his flying school ... so burocrats become wary about these things apparently.

Maybe I'm just extremely optimistic, but for a visa for a student, surely thaey'd take having a friend more as support than a potential relationship? And even if, if that ensures the country gets a smart student to marry one of the citizens, I doubt that anyone will mind. It MIGHT be a problem if they thought you were after benefits, but the number of people from the US doing that is probably quite low...

ZeroG, the question's 4.27/8 are there for people that have been convicted of such crimes in a court of law, they have to declair them for the rest of their lives. I.E. a former IRA bomber would have to answer yes to 4.27 and then explain what offences he was found guilty of and which country the conviction was held.

As for the friend situation I think Rouge and Birgit have covered it pretty well. I never thought about the flip side of talking to the Consul when I originaly posted, and now can see why you were/are hesitant.
