Just had some fun last Weds at a party. When I was setting up before hand I was assigned to hang lights. I'm sure many of us had thought of spinning light bulbs before (I certainly had) but I actually took the time to do it and had a blast. I spun 60 watt bulbs on the end of regular 120 volt wires plugged into an extension cord wrapped around my neck and down my belt.

Granted, every time the bulb gently banged something it went out but at $0.75 a bulb I only burned out two.

And before I get yelled at YES, I had bulb safety. Molly was at the ready with a dustpan and broom ready to pull my plug if I tangled. wink
Photos in my gallery.

This actually rose the question:

Why are we busting our butts trying to put power sources in the balls of light up poi when they can easily be relocated up the string to the spinner or even to a wall outlet near by?

Food for thought.

Well, shall we go?

cool! I have to admit, fear of borken, hot glass and electrocution would put me off that one, but very impressive nonetheless.

problem with poi attached to the spinner: no throws!

I'm all for it as a bit of performance equipment... might be a bit tricky doing lots of turns, or moving around a lot... (depending on the size of your extension cable...)

Actually, I was suprised that it didn't tangle as long as I had it 'attached' to my body. I think if it was run down a leg it would be pretty mobile. I mean, you wouldn't be able to skip down the street but you could certainly move about a stage area.

I'm even thinking of larger batteries and such in backpacks or something.

fair enough. The best bit is that you're NEVER going to have issues of 'not bright enough' ... Different colours lightbulbs would be worth a laugh too...

and energy saving bulbs are a bit tougher aren't they? But they would gradually get brighter at the start...

So, what happens when you smack yourself in the face while spinning light bulbs?

Perhaps if you coated the bulb with plastic wrap or silicone or something it would be a little safer. Just gotta make sure it wont be something that nelts.

I think if it shattered into your eyes it'd be bad. But breaking in general is just thin glass.

I don't really smack myself in my face when I mess up. Do you?

Really? I never really found that. I did quite a few pinwheels with the bulbs and didn't have a problem. I generally find it will hit my chest before it will hit my chin...

It's not so much hitting myself that I would worry about; it's random people getting hit by flying glass shards that would worry me.
