well, i was just crusing around the net today and browsing some other Forums when i found this

I would take that forum with a pinch of salt. The author seems to have his own agenda and some of the photos and captions are kind of funny.
A completely out of focus photo with the caption, "They still havent figured out how to make flat glass withtout bubbles" !?
Many of the issues the photos show are common to all developing countries (like the slums), not just socialist countries. I think you would find worse slums and more poverty in India for example, a capitalist country that is constantly hailed for its rapid economic growth. I'm sure there are many things about North Korea that should change (you could say that about just about any country), but I refuse to believe that it's as evil as the mainstream media make it out to be.
I was fortunate enough to visit Cuba last year and what an eye opener that was! Having never been exposed to anything but anti-socialist, anti-Castro western (mostly American of course) propoganda, I didn't really know what to expect. It turned out that most of what I'd heard was rubbish. Yes, Cubans are poor by developed country standards, but EVERYONE has a house, food, clothes, education and of course access to one of the best healthcare systems in the world. That is a lot more than any capitalist developing and many developed countries can say. And contrary to popular belief, Cubans are not arrested for hanging out with foreigners. We spent most of our time with ordinary Cubans, staying in their homes. And whether you like it or not, there is also very strong support for Castro among common Cubans. Once again, I'm not trying to say that everything out there is perfect, just that what you hear in the mainstream media is very biased at best, and a complete lie much of the time.

Reminds me of East Germany really. Well, not the slums, but the way guests were escorted through a very pretty street with old buildings, while the invisible back of the same street was still half-ruined from the war 40 years ago...
Standard practice in Africa, too, make one sector of the capital über-pretty and completely neglect the rest.

That's not to say North Korea isn't in a not-too-good state, just that there are countries who might be so called "free economies" even though their people are not.
There was a show on the ABC a few months back about The Games they have in North Korea where all the kids do the dance and contortion. I found that much more of an eye opener as it showed the brainwashing of the children from the propoganda.

I like the fact that communists tend to make massive monuments and obelisks reaching towards the sky, its actually inspiring.
The 3rd picture down of the whole city with that massive pyramid like thing looks awesome.

Oh don't get me wrong, I love Romania! And I'm sure many people here will tell you that! But I think their cities and country towns were worse than those photos of North Korea. But I think one of the biggest differences is (as initially drawn to my attention by my Romanian sister) that in communist countries, everyone knows they aren't free. However, in many post communist countries, like Romania, that are still young in their new government situations, the world thinks they're free but the reality is far from different.

while i concede that the commentry is one sided, the photos are quite interesting in themselves. especially those columns and cubes that can be knocked over to block roads in case of an invasion.
i just found it interesting as one of my brothers friends was a missionary in South Korea for two years and spoke often about how much worse it was in the North. its just all very different from what i take for granted.
