I've been busy designing recently and I'm happy to report I've made some serious progress! I've very nearly got the final prototype board fleshed out and a design I reckon ought to work very well for the casing.

I'll send off for the first set of prototype boards some time next week (still needs some tweaking and double-checking). I need to investigate a few more companies to find someone to make my polycarbonate balls. Just need to get the software up to scratch now. As it stands you'd need to have some special hardware to add new light sequences etc. into them... once I've got my head around a few things, you'll just be able to plug your hyperlights into a USB socket, fire up your software and tell them what you want!

Watch this space biggrin cool

sounds quite good. id just get some rechargable ones like uniross or something. Try and make them as light as possible, i dont fancy a 200gram weight hitting my spuds! 60 or 70 grams would be perfect (ie tennis ball weight)

They will definitely be less than 200g... I've started to think they might actually end up being too light! I've made provisions so that more weight can be added easily though smile

thats good. i suppose if there gonna be put in socks or whatever it doesnt matter if there too light because some extra weight could be added around them.

Very true!

The boards arrived today (exciting stuff smile).I spent a few hours this evening soldering away. Unfortunately I've realised I ordered a couple of wrong components so I've just stuck another order in for those. Farnel are pretty quick at delivering so hopefully I'll have them in time for Thursday. Here's a sneaky peak:

would it be a good idea to market them somewhere like play.com with a couple of videos of you using them. Im sure many would buy into the idea if someone markets them as being 'cool' smile

I dare say that when they're ready for public consumption I won't have to make any videos. People will be doing that for me because they're so happy with their toys wink

To get poi into the mainstream though, something like that could be pretty cool. Could be good publicity for the poi scene in general in fact eek biggrin

Highly likely... and if anything, I think the new versions may be (slightly) brighter still! I'd double check but the prototypes are in the car and that means three flights of stairs which can wait 'till tomorrow smile

I have a few hardware / firmware issues and features to fix and implement before I'm ready to send prototypes to people... but I may well release a teaser of myself and chutney probably spinning them in a month or so's time. I'm off on holiday at the end of the week and I'm super busy up to then. When I get back though, I'll be very keen to get cracking on it all again!

And you think I will be able to compete with this?? Haha... I'm almost a complete newbie to building stuff seriously. Sure I built some simple stuff, like flashing diod light and stuff with batteries and stuff, but nothing seriousl + I knew how to handle a scredriver before I could walk "it's true"...

Eagerly awaiting to see your future progress man!

Could I request a special hyperlight unit please?

I'd like one that can be clipped to a keyring so that I don't have to wander up and down a campsite when Dunc drops the bus keys in the grass at play next year wink

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

Drops? hmm, that doesn't sound right at all... are you sure it's not devolving?!

That's certainly possible, although the new lights are so bright you'd be blind long before you got close enough to pick them up. Mind you, you'd be unable to drive then so I guess it solves the problem wither way biggrin

3 LEDs (RGB)

3 Transistors (or FETs or something)

Some current limiting resistors

Some capacitors for smoothing

a PIC to control it all

...is what that diagram looks like to me. Sound about right? smile

[Edit] For the record, I'd say you were progressing at a similar rate rather than catching up wink I've just about finished some revised (now even closer to the final product!) schematics to get made up[/Edit]

Cheers... things are starting to gather momentum once again:

I got replies from another 8 plastics companies and will send of diagrams to them tonight to get some quotes
I've started work on the website with Sym's help
I had a play with the accelerometer over the weekend (this will hopefully let you do things like triggering colour changes depending on how fast you spin, positions of your spin (at the top or bottom for example) or making things change colour when you do a wrap or a stall)
USB support. I think I have just about all I need to start work on the USB conenction to your PC/MAC/whatever smile

The USB part is going to be tricky, but I'm feeling confident that I now have all the pieces in place. It's definitely possible to do what I'm planning, just needs me to build the prototype circuit and have a fiddle biggrin
