Posted:I'm sorry, I've been searching all morning by my damn internet keeps defaulting to American websites.

All I want to know is how much is an 8 foot 2x4 piece of wood. Do you have 2x4s? Or has cut lumber not made it out to the UK and y'all just live in large log cabins?

In the US, an 8' 2x4 is just under $3 and a 10 footer is just over $3.

THIS is a 2x4.

NYC - did you remember to add an unspecified amount of tax to your American prices before calculating how much their wood costs? tongue

Wow..I don't think I ever knew how much I loved men who really knew their wood and poles. *shivers* ubblove

Enough o dat...

Hey NYC, ever occur to you to ship the plans to one of the smarter UK crew (I know, I know..slim pickins tongue ) to convert for you.

Or...and this I agree with...well..whoever it was...

the Geo-domes are not so hard to come by and are pretty easy to assemble. They also tend to be available globally...so perhaps a crew of you can chip in for one?

Instead of tarps you can also use hot air balloons.

Many commercial balloonists will give the old ones to you for free. They allow filtered light to come through, are of a rip stop nylon which when treated is also pretty weather proof, they are airier than tarps and come in megaloads of colors. It is very nice and ethereal indeed. Just a thought for you.

As for the web issue...you are typing ".uk" in right? I know you damn sciency types like to make things over complicated so I'm just making sure.;)

Oh pleeze... the UK crew don't even make their own poi. You think they can assemble a geodesic dome from lumber they apparently don't ethically believe in?

wink

And the only thing that's harder than getting a UK crew to build something is to get them to pay for it.

Either way, the wonders of google can translate measurements for you, make someone buy you 50x100mm boards (I think?) length shouldn't matter as long as they're all consistant your angles should stay the same and you'll be golden.

If you want a hint, look for where the lines change direction.

Cool huh?

And there's always 12 pentagons. No matter how big the sphere or how many hexagons.

It all comes back to D+D dice. Start out with a 12 sided and just start adding hexagons.

Ha, D+D and geometry. Try to outgeek that!

i guess this would be a bad time to mention that eden's bio domes have 831 panels in total (625 hexagons, 16 pentagons and 190 triangles)? wink

I was thinking of that but actually it's geodesic domes to geodesic domes in 3 pages. smile

And any variation in the hexagon/pentagon ratio is due to the fact that life isn't perfect and you've got gravity to contend with.

It's actually that buckyballs aren't round but have several planes of hexagons joined by the pentagons. If you want to have round ones (like all of the above) you actually have to warp the struts a bit. All large structural geodesic domes cheat a bit to compensate for weight and gravity and to make them a bit rounder.

I did say it was my favorite organic chemistry lecture ever. biggrin

And now, every time you see one, you can find a pentagon and think of me. wink

That's a better one showing that the bigger ones aren't actually round.

Oh, but the coolest thing is that C60 is slippery because they act as the smallest ball bearings. smile
