I'm sorry, I've been searching all morning by my damn internet keeps defaulting to American websites.

All I want to know is how much is an 8 foot 2x4 piece of wood. Do you have 2x4s? Or has cut lumber not made it out to the UK and y'all just live in large log cabins?

In the US, an 8' 2x4 is just under $3 and a 10 footer is just over $3.

THIS is a 2x4.

If you're using google... did you try the advanced search?

https://www.google.co.uk/advanced_search?hl=en

It has a function where you can search for certain domains, so those ending on .co.uk in that case smile works for me, and my default is German.

We just got back from Playa Del Fuego (regional burningman burn festival weekend thingie) and our themecamp built one of these and threw tarps over it making a really nice shade/rain structure to sit around in. It's only $65 + lumber.

I loved it so much I was daydreaming about bringing it to EJC but I don't know how I'd get 25 pieces of lumber out there. And the fact that y'all are in metric and the system is in inches makes it even more difficult.

Harder to bring the themecamp love to Ireland than I thought...

Oh well, a boy can always dream.

There are other kits like that NYC that involve poles and connectors.... I'll see if I can find you a web page. They use...if my memory serves me right..... broom handle sized poles for the small structures and slightly thicker poles for the bigger ones.

If you want to look it up yourself I think they were called geo-dome kits.... but my memory isn't all that reliable so they might have another name and I just imagined that one biggrin

[edit]

I found This american site for the connectors. I'm sure there are british ones somewhere too. I just haven't managed to find them in my quick Google search. I'll take a better look tomorrow when I'm less tired.

This site might interest you too. I only skimmed through it but it has plans for very complex domes on there if you want to be adventurous. ubbrollsmile

Hey NYC

Firstly, that's a fortune. Secondly, I find it strange that I still can't find that anywhere on the internet.

Here's what I found from a US site:

KD Hem-fir/SPF Estimating Guide, 8' 10' 12' 14' 16' 18' 20'
2x4 $2.60 $3.26 $3.91 $4.63 $5.30 $0.00 $6.68
2x6 $3.73 $4.74 $5.69 $6.64 $7.58 $8.67 $9.64
2x8 $4.80 $6.00 $7.38 $8.68 $9.92 $11.16 $12.40
2x10 $6.48 $9.56 $9.56 $11.15 $12.74 $14.58 $16.20
2x12 $7.58 $9.40 $11.19 $13.05 $14.92 $17.06 $18.96

I'm guessing that you'd call that PAR since it's like the above pictured wood which is smooth on all sides. That means that for a 10 foot piece of wood, I'm paying $3.26 and you're paying around $10 (more than 2 meters x 2.50 pounds)?

Yikes. Nevermind my shade structure indeed.

But why can't I find sites online? Is buying lumber uncommon in the UK? I do it all the time for art projects and my apartment. confused

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

NYC, most bristish sites won't list prices for wood, you actually have to go into the stores. For examples one of the biggest DIY stores in the country B&Q, do not list timber on their site (www.diy.com) but you have to into the store. Put a plea out to anyone that works in B&Q, Wickes, Travis Perkins, homebase etc and ask them to nip up the timber aisle and tell you.

Your right dude - it is wierd, i buy timber all the time, but in large quatities and with huge discounts so i dont really notice.

Over here it is amazing how building material supply companies rip off the general public. I mean our standard discounts with most suppliers is 50% with some its up to even 85%.

Which in my eyes really puts into context how much our commercial compainies rip off the general public.

Sad thing is since the DIY boom over here thanks to programmes like "changing rooms" really has made the industry capitalise on the nieve public.

Tiz a shame as the big bosses in our construction marklet are fricken loaded!

Most of our products are imported as well, where as i would imagine yours are obtainable from your "own" land, if you get what i mean, our country thrives on TAX, youve been here, surely youve noticed wink

I like the structure idea though smile

It is strange. I did the math a while back and found that I'm about 6 times richer living here than there. My teacher salary is about 3 time what it would be in the UK and everything costs about half here.

firstly lumber is called timber here - that's probably what was messing with your searches smile

i know that, in general, we are much less addicted to hardwood than america is.

for example, hardwood decking here is very rare as far as i know (due i'd guess to the average house size and type?).

here is travis perkins timber catalogue:

https://www.jewson.co.uk/en/download/brochure/category/TimberPanel/2Inners.pdf

(you want page 9 onwards)

you can get wood, but as strugz said, you will be ripped off unless you already have a good relationship with a builder's merchant.
