A tongue-in-cheek look at advertising directed at keeping women looking the way nature never intended.
And it made me think. Why do women shave their legs? Or armpits? OK. I know lots of women don't, and it's (I believe) predominately a western thing, with the exception of a few European countries.
But why is it meant to be asthetcially pleasing? At what stage did someone sit down and say, I know, while we're shortening skirts, let's make everyone think that women's legs should be unnaturally silken (have I just answered my own question with that word!?)
There is a bigger discussion here though. While women are being pushed to primp, polish, tweeze and pluck, what, historically are men still pushed to change about their appearance. (I'm not, at this stage, talking about body shape - ie skinny, or buff - that's a whole new thread!) Just why did no-one say...right, men should shave their arms as well as their faces? Or their armpits, or legs?
Or is it something that's changing? Men now do tweeze their eyebrowns more, and get their backs waxed...what is it about excess hair in these societies?! Why is it so frowned upon and considered unattractive?
A quick statement of intent here - this is not a feminest-orientated rant. I am just interested in why and what started the whol process. I need my bra, and am not ready to burn it....

Playing devil's advocate to the whole 'shaving isn't natural' lobby; The hair served a purpose once (warmth) which is now no longer necessary (underarm hair is different but also no longer necessary) and therefore surely it's just evolution in a way. Who knows, humans might end up with just hair on their heads one day.

hair tends to grow over glands, which produce pheromones...the oils that contain the pheromones get held by the hair in these places, thus aiding in attraction...hypothetically....

hair never served the purpose of warmth...at least not with homo sapians...

I'm pretty lazy my hairs!
I regularly wax my underarms and bikini line though but everything else I'm just sort of like 'meh'
I'm totally lazy with eyebrows, and only pluck them once every couple of weeks. I'm the same with shaving my legs, the hair on my legs manages to stay fine and light so it doesn't really bother me that much. Especially now that the colder weather is coming up which is more of an excuse to be lazy!
Sometimes it just feels good to be hair free!

i'm with zamirii, i shave cause if i let my beard grow too long it itches like crazy.
make-up is silly. i have a blue scar inbetween my eyes (from splitting my head open with a flaming staff) that gets commented on heaps, but i dont really care cause its just a part of me.

I think the shaving legs and pits business playes up with the whole "women = weak" and "men = strong". If a man is harier, he seems more rugged generally, meanwhile women who are supposed to be very feminine and not so rugged are kept clean and soft. Think of the women from the 50s (as in the cover of the book) where they were very soft and bilowey, and seemed very fragile. I think a lot of the "beauty" expectations came from this period in time.
Personally, I don't shave all that often really. I normally have my legs covered, but if I don't have them covered, I do feel much more comfortable having them shaved. Mostly I'm just lazy

I also think a large part of it is that we've forced it to be needed to be socially acceptable. I remember in grade 8 when us girls would scrutinize one another for our shaving habits. It was like we were trained to think that hairy legs was unattractive. And unfortunately, myself included, we have bought into it. I enjoy looking at a female with smoothe legs and non-hairy or stubly arm pits. It just makes everything to streamlined and neat, maybe. Also, I've gotten used to feeling things on the skin of my legs, but not things brushing against the hair of my legs. Two completely different feelings, for sure!
On a completely different topic, procrastination is fun

When you get cold your goose pimples rise, making your hair stand on end slightly which traps a layer of air on the surface of the skin and you warm up.

Beards are even better. A natural scarf for the rugged woodsman... which is why men have to go out in the snow and chop the firewood while the women get to stay in the house by the fire.

as someone who has been both shaved and unshaved, hair doesnt keep you warm......i speak from experience...your hair isnt dense enough to trap warmth

At first it was sexy, hot hot hot, then I realised that the amount of time and energy dedicated to that purpose was kind of absurd, and when I saw it that way, the sexiness of it all receded... Is there nothing better to do with ones time? It was practically ritual for him, so we parted ways.
I do wear makeup, and kind of randomly shave or wax, but only when I feel like it. Often makeup is a mask, when I feel like [censored] and want to hide, or maybe just want to feel like someone else for a day...
Other times I just enjoy it, luxuriate in the textures colours and smells, and make my face like a canvas. When I was a little punk rocker I used to do one half of my face one set of colours, and the other another... silly, but fun.
Where I live, it is really open, women can be or not be whatever they want, you see a bit of everything going on. But still,the guys recognize the city girls when they come on holiday, cause they are more likely to be shaved perfumed, and as one guy said " not barefoot, birkenstocks or gum boots"lol

I beg to differ. Hair definitely keeps me warm. Every summer I have to tie my hair up or die from the heat. Every winter I keep my hair down so I don't freeze. You wouldn't think so, but it makes a huge difference.
And about the whole leg-shaving bit...I think it's silly. Don't get me wrong, I love the feel of smooth and silky body parts, but it's a royal pain and extremely time consuming. I'm way to lazy to deal with it on a regular basis, so I only shave when I need to wear something that'll show off my legs or whatever. Curse society/media for saying females need to shave!

I agree with what Beth said about men being nice and hairy
also, i find that I dont mind shaving my armpits, but I find legs a real hassle and only do it if i have to or can be bothered. I havent plucked my eyebrows for about a year and to be honest, am putting it off for as long as possible.
I also dont particularly like wearing makeup, but will apply eyeliner if i can be arsed and if i'm seeing anyone that worthy!
really though, if you're happy in your own skin and you feel beautiful then why bother with all the treatments and products and pain?

Men have hairy scratchy legs but arent expected to shave, at least, the majority dont.
I disagree that women prefer to be smooth because i dont care either way and most women i know either dont shave or only do it because their boyfriends like it. I think that women shave their legs because its a societal expectation, especially from men. It's that expectation, the want of your girlfriend/wife to be pre-pubsecent-looking and unnatural, that i totally object to and defy.
Personally i really dont see what the repulsion is to the natural female form, hair and all!

But surly you do feel nicer with silky smooth legs, not sratchy hairy ones, so if it wasnt hastle to do it then you'd do it all the time wouldnt you?
I would think most woman do it because they themselves prefere to be smooth
Men have hairy scratchy legs but arent expected to shave, at least, the majority dont.
I disagree that women prefer to be smooth because i dont care either way and most women i know either dont shave or only do it because their boyfriends like it. I think women shaving etc do it to feel good, both becuae it litterally feels nice and it is the done thing when you are going to wear something that reveals your legs as its not socially acceptable to have big fat hairs all over them.
I guess its an exaggeration of communicating "yes im a delicate youthful fragile female" compared to an extreme "I'm a strong hairy maleprotector"
...........I envy women with fine sparse leg hair
Why do we have to go through so much pain, time energy and money just to look normal every morning?
I'm glad I dont have to shave my face every morning, I'd definately be a beardie if I was a man................probably....

And when it comes to individual partners, who I do care about , at least to a degree... I prefer men who think for themselves about what they like and do not like, and recognize me as a whole person not just an object --smooth or not. If the partner thinks in an open fashion, then anything goes, and we can just have fun exploring and appreciating all sorts of diversity of physical aspects.
I feel compassion for the young kids, who are still developing /finding identity , wanting to fit in, and may not yet have the confidence to assert their own likes and dislikes, or even know what they are. Hopefully they will get through it with some esteem intact, and eventually define their own beauty , do whatever feels good for them.
