Hello my Antipodean friends,

My parents are sailing the world (Currently in Tahiti- life's tough for some!) and they have asked me to find out how they can get from Cairns to Perth for a wedding in September.
Help! Where do I start - how much should the expect to pay? Any point trying trains?
Sorry to sound thick, but I know nothing about Oz travel.

Thanks guys, Loads of hugs.

If it costs "a penny for your thoughts", but people give you their "two-pence worth", who is getting the extra penny?

trains??? ubblol only if you have a spare week each way

flying is really your only option. off peak flight will probabably cost $375 AUD each way - peak time probably over $500 each way. A direct flight may take at least 4 hours - although may go via sydney or brisbane so up that to 6 hours

i thought there were international flights directly to perth? i think the cheapest flights from the UK stop over in Thailand. maybe you should speak to a travel agent wink

yeah, flying'd be where its at. Driving would be an extraordinarily long ordeal, as would bussing or training.

Probably take the best part of a week and a half, maybe two weeks to drive, depending on how long you stay on the road for each day (6hrs per day is about 12.5 days). Add seeing the sights to that, and it turns into a very long prospect. The overall distance is about 6000km, or 3700 miles. On the highway, you'd average about 80-90km/h, after traffic, towns, and all that sorta stuff's taken into account. At an average of 80km/h, 75 hours or so would be spent on the road. Add another couple of days for bus travelling, due to stops and all that.

Not sure what a train would take, but i'd say it would be about the same sorta timeframe as driving. maybe a bit less, but then there's transfers and so on.
