Just found that site, i knew ipods had this problem but i never knew it was this bad. I hear the new ones are better tho, anyone know anything about this?

I love that these guys actually went out and did this. I've always talked about this kinda thing when i've been stitched up but to actually do it, film it and get it online gets full props from me.

What Apple actually do is give you a whole unit, so in my case it would cost 60 to go from a 40gb G3 to a 60gb G4 with a color screen. I'm quite happy with that smile

Posted:depends on what sort of battery, as to how good it'll hold its charge.

Ni-Cad (Nickel Cadmium)- Not used so much anymore, but it likes a full discharge, then a full recharge. if you half deplete it, then charge it, it develops a 'memory' and only charges from that point. So, if you have a 2000mAh nicad, it gets half flat, and you charge it again, repeatedly, you'll end up with a 1000mAh battery. You can take them in to some places and get them cycled, which brings them up like new, but i don't know how much that costs. Good for high current applications, like cordless drills. Tend to have a lifespan in charges (however many cycles)

Li-Ion (Lithium Ion) This is in a lot of phones. Good for constant, low level drain. Very light. However, they lose capacity over time, charged or not.

NiMH (Nickel-Metal Hydride)- Good for medium drain devices, like cameras. Otherwise, fairly similar to nicads. Suffer from some memory effect, but not too bad.

Q: I need a rechargeable battery that will last 10 years in service. My boss is suggesting lithium-ion. Any suggestions?

A: This is an open question, since you don't say how many charge/discharge cycles you need. Unfortunately lithium ion won't last 10 years. Industry rule of thumb has been "2 years whether you use them or not." The technology has been improving, and some are now saying "3 years whether you use them or not." The reason for the short life is that the electrolyte reacts with the lithium ions and creates crud on the electrodes.

This, of course, depends on your criteria for failure. The 2-3 years is based on 20% permanent loss in capacity. I have a lithium ion battery for my cell phone that is 5 years old, but it is only good for one call a day (which is enough for me). No one will guarantee lithium ion rechargeable cells for 5 years, or even 3 years. Another problem with lithium-ion is it doesn't do well with fast discharge times. The higher the rate of discharge the more reaction occurs with the electrolyte, and the faster the crud builds up. There are lithium polymer batteries that can give higher currents, but lifetime is also a problem with them. NiCad is the best for long life. NiMH may be a possibility, it depends on how many charge/recharge cycles. NiCad is by far the best for fast charge. Lead acid lasts 3-5 years on standby. So the only possibility for a 5-10 year life is NiCad, and then only if you charge them right, don't discharge them past 1 volt per cell, and over-specify them so that you still have enough run time even though they are starting to degrade.

The only way a Li-Ion battery is going to get it's maximum lifetime, is if it has a computer watching it's usage, and handling it's charging. There probably isn't space in an iPod for the extra circuitry.

Freezing batteries may work for the NiCd and NiMH batteries used in cordless drills, but LiIons don't charge properly when cold.

You obviously think apple are customer orientated, not proift orientated! And with so many customers blindly going back to apple when their ipods fail and buying a brand new one instead of pushing for replacement batteries and customer service or looking at the huge range of competitions inthe market it's no wonder they left it so long before changing their policy to replace batteries. It's earnt them millions in the last 5 years or so....

Posted:I've had my iPod for 2 years, and I paid 250 for it (I think, thats the most anyway).

So it's cost me about 34p a day for those 2 years. Even with the price taken up to 310 when you include the new battery it will only have cost me 42p a day for the last 2 years. If that lasts another 2 years it'll cost me 21p a day.

I use my iPod every day and I get about 20 tracks on my way to work and back, plus the podcasts and partys etc. I will end up paying 1p per song I hear.

I earn that much in 4 seconds.

Granted, that could apply to anything, but if you think about it that way, 60 every 2 years isn't really bad at all.

I find it very amusing that anyone who wants to watch that video has to download Apple's quicktime software, and therefore also download Apple's iTunes too.
That was particularly well thought out by the Neistat brothers umm

well i think its a damn good offfer, and the fact that if you had an mp3 player that used normal btteries you would probably end up spending well over the price for a new ipod for them anyway

so my message to all you people out there is be happy with what you have, and then spend 60 quid and get a new one lol

hope i havent offended anyone

And how it took a video spread across the world to cause enough trouble and strife to force apple to change this policy and give their customers a fair priced replacement of genuine apple products.

Much like how Supersize me changed MacD's in the western world.

it's a bizarre world we live in, but AUD$450 products (or whatever the equivalent in your part of the world) have become consumables.... you use them up and chuck em away...
