After a party the other night, my kitchen bench now has some lovely rings from the bottom of red wine glasses.

And I can't get them off.

I have looked on google, but the overwhelming result has been getting wine out of fabrics; carpet, table cloth, couches, etc.

In talking about removing wine from walls, one mentioned citrus juice based products. And another mentioned vinegar. I worry about lemon juice or vinegar eating the top of the bench.

What are people's tried and tested methods? Baring in mind I live in a houe of students so lemon and vinegar and washing up detergent are pretty much all that can be found in our house (and afforded).

I doubt lemon or vinegar would damage the worktop at all, as acids go they're pretty weak. Try bar soap.

Salt on a wet stain soaks it all up and I know it works. smile

Other than that.. try white wine (seriously) it should mean that the stain comes right out. biggrin

Or try "Stain Devils" of the red wine variety. ubblol

What's your bench made out of? If it's marble the lemon juice will erode it, other surfaces will be OK.

There is a slight possibility that I am not actually right all of the time.

theirs a cleaning paste thing called something like 'Gumption' that ive used on bench stains in the past and works pretty well.
Otherwise, just find a dog and im sure it will lick any food/wine residue off.

White wine works to remove red wine stains. Same solvent, no pigment.

My mums a cleaner and has many tried and tested weird cleaning tips.
Her one for this one sounds completely bizarre but TRUST me, i promise it works!

Get some cigarette ash....yes cigarette ash....and mix it with a little olive or vegetable oil to form a thin paste.

Rub on to ring mark, leave for half an hour....wipe off!

Don't know if they have them where you live, but here in the US there is a product called "Magic Eraser." I think it is made by the people who make Mr. Clean. It looks like a white sponge and you wet it and then use it to rub away stains, marks etc. It seems to work miracles, so I recommend that. But it might be best to test it on an inconspicuous area first. Good luck!

*wears geek hat*
if anyone's interested, the reason this works is 'cuz you're basically making soap; alkali + oil or fat = soap.
simple smile

you could try lighter fuel, thats quite good at cleanign things off
