so i'm finally thinking of buying a mac smile

i'm looking at an imac g4 (1.25ghz) with a 17" screen:

Non-Https Image Link

i'll be using it for layout and graphics mainly (running quark and adobe cs2) but would like it to completely replace my pc if at all possible.

i currently use my pc for video editing, watching videos, watching dvd's, playing music and browsing the net, so i don't think a g4 should have any problems doing all that stuff!

the problem is, the last time i used a mac was in 1997 so its safe to say i don't know that much about them...

will i need to look out for one with a hardcore video card if i want to edit video?
how much memory is sufficient to run say illustrator and quark at the same time with a few files loaded?
how easy would it be to replace the hard drive with a larger one?
can i convert my current hard drive to a usb external drive and use it?
will pc peripherals work with a mac (hp scanner, sandisk card reader, svga monitor/projector)?
how much cooler will my ipod look next to an imac? wink
should i keep my pc anyway cos all my friends have them and its easier to have one around than mess about converting files?
can i get good thirdparty software for free like firefox and thunderbird, a download manager, anti-spy/adware, virus checkers and a multi-region dvd player hack so i can play any dvd form any region (this one is *really* important for me)?

i'd also like some general advice please, especially anything important that i should look out for when buying a mac.

if anyone has any experiences that they'd like to share of going from using a pc to using a mac as their main home computer, i'd love to hear about them too.

cheers,

cole. x

The most fun ever to be had in an airport: Visit Saudi Arabia in 2002 with your physics professor father to demonstrate laser technology to one of their oil companies then three months later try and get into America on the same passport. 100 points for every hour you have to spend in immigration explaining exactly what you were doing in Saudi. 1000 bonus points if your Saudi visa is on the page next to the American visa. 1000 more bonus points if you can then produce a Canadian passport. biggrin

I love being dual nationality especially when I go over to France and wind up the French customs by flashing my Canadian passport and telling them I'm looking for a job...

Back on topic. I've been told to turn my iBook off on a plane twice. Once because it was making a "whirring" noise while I was watching a DVD and the other time because I was watching the Pilot episodes of Lost on a Glasgow to London flight...

I had intended to move to Japan permanently, and would have got much satisfaction posting my British passport to Tony Blair with a letter saying 'Your country sucks. I won't be needing this any more'. Unfortunately emigrating isn't easy when you're on indefinate disability benefits.

The second time out I kind of surprised people by eating the Japanese airplane food (skillfully with chopsticks, of course) and watching all the Japanese films (albeit subtitled).

You wouldn't've heard the whirring where I was sat. One of the engines was making some wierd noises biggrin

My trip to Japan allowed me to ship 7x30Kg boxes of computers home, nearly all of which I got for free over there smile

I had plenty of reasons for wanting to move, but 100Mb ADSL in a remote mountain valley for ~£20/month and 128Kb wireless for the same amount is one I think you'll agree is pretty sweet.

if only apple uk would be so accommodating to [Old link].

while i'm here, does anyone have any apple-related forums they'd like to recommend?

specifically for discussion/support on os x, general mac use, photoshop, and illustrator.

no, but i did bookmark hop last night as soon as i'd set it up biggrin

as easy as it was to set-up, i still had some teething problems - the first thing i tried to install didn't bloody work!

double click on the application, it appears bouncing in the dock for a couple of seconds and then disappears again frown

but i managed to find a replacement app fairly quickly and installed a bunch of other stuff too, including quarkxpress first thing this morning biggrin

its sooooooooooooo sexy! ubblove ubblol biggrin

yep - i now know exactly what i would look like if i were on bo selecta smile

i think my imac has a dodgy screen though ubbcrying

spent ages on the phone to apple who assed me to do lots of software things and resets before they would believe me that it blatently has a sh!t screen and that i would have to take it to an apple shop/dealer/fixer upper to get them to look at it.

the problem is that after the mac has been sleeping for more than a few hours, when i wake it up, it has funny lines down the screen that are either discolured, flicker slightly or both.

gonna leave it for a while now that the call has been logged (so they know it hasn't happened because i stepped on it or anything like that) and take it in if and when it gets worse.

The only problem with that is that they may just give you a new one - so all your software and configs will go. You should do a full back up before you give it to them...

Sorry if that seems basic - I just know what a pain it is! smile

In the Computer shop I ran (PCs and Macs) I found so much porn (home made was the most fun - when the wife came to pick it up....) illigal software, bank numbers, etc etc.

You learn to ignore it all and just fix the problems. I doubt apple tech support will care at all, but it might be best to back up and remove it anyway...

My iBook HD went down like two day after the warranty finished. Fortunately, Apple called me a week before that and asked me if I was AppleCare. I told them I will think about it which gave me an extra month to apply for it.

Sign up for AC and wheeled my baby in. The darlings fixed the HD and replaced the patchy screen! hug On top of that repair, I will have two years coverage! Kick Ass!!!

The registration number should be registered with Applecare as soon as you buy it and 'linked' to a particular computer. That starts a file on a central database somewhere in Appleland that can be accessed by Apple shops anywhere by keying in your computer's serial number (which is under the keyboard, I think). So you don't have to carry your warranty around the world if you travel/everyone knows what's been done on it elsewhere etc. The file even has a pretty picture of your computer model on it..

If you have not already registered that number with Applecare, I suggest *yes* do find it and register, will make life very easy if you ever need to use it.

If you can't find it, call the shop you bought it from, they may have registered it for you (mine did)
Or they may have copied the number onto their invoice or sales system.
