so i'm finally thinking of buying a mac smile

i'm looking at an imac g4 (1.25ghz) with a 17" screen:

Non-Https Image Link

i'll be using it for layout and graphics mainly (running quark and adobe cs2) but would like it to completely replace my pc if at all possible.

i currently use my pc for video editing, watching videos, watching dvd's, playing music and browsing the net, so i don't think a g4 should have any problems doing all that stuff!

the problem is, the last time i used a mac was in 1997 so its safe to say i don't know that much about them...

will i need to look out for one with a hardcore video card if i want to edit video?
how much memory is sufficient to run say illustrator and quark at the same time with a few files loaded?
how easy would it be to replace the hard drive with a larger one?
can i convert my current hard drive to a usb external drive and use it?
will pc peripherals work with a mac (hp scanner, sandisk card reader, svga monitor/projector)?
how much cooler will my ipod look next to an imac? wink
should i keep my pc anyway cos all my friends have them and its easier to have one around than mess about converting files?
can i get good thirdparty software for free like firefox and thunderbird, a download manager, anti-spy/adware, virus checkers and a multi-region dvd player hack so i can play any dvd form any region (this one is *really* important for me)?

i'd also like some general advice please, especially anything important that i should look out for when buying a mac.

if anyone has any experiences that they'd like to share of going from using a pc to using a mac as their main home computer, i'd love to hear about them too.

cheers,

cole. x

Pen draven... Huh?

Nice one for the link cole... as soon as i get my machine back in ship shape i'll have a look.

My mac got sooooo hijacked as soon as i bought it... i've barely had time to break it, let alone fix it. Im a bit of a geek so i'd be dissapointed if i couldnt break it a bit.

What would you do if you had no tv, loved movies and your flatmate bought a 20" imac...

Cole,, It's not monsterously hard,, but if memory serves you'll probably need Torx drivers sizes 6 and 8 to undo all the screws (but my memory is rather flakey so could be wrong)

No Worries Mr Cole smile Always glad to help

You should be able to chuck 10.4 on it no worries,, but if its got less than 256 meg of Ram in it it'll struggle a lil so maybe 10.3 might be a better option. You can buy either of those from your local Applestore/ online or just do the usual and errr {cough} angel2

Good lil app i use for mac specs and helpfulness is Mactracker https://www.mactracker.ca/

MCP Good way of finding out all your specs is to launch System Profiler (Its in the utilities folder in the Apps folder) All the info you need (and a shedload more) will be listed in there

thanks mr draven (can i call you nick/nik/nic/gnyq?) hug

meg = the angel i mentioned earlier hug

i found out the specs by removing the keyboard (use the two little slide switches at the top in-between the keys) and looking at the serial sticker above the airport card slot.

they are both 12" dual usb models (from around 2001) and the sticker says something like "600mhz/128mb/15gb/cd", which i guess means its a g3 600mhz processor with a 15 gig hdd, 128 meg of ram and a cd drive smile

of course, if you can turn them on and that, you can just click the apple on the menu bar and go to 'system info' then click the 'more info' button if you need more (this will launch the system profiler app that pen mentioned).

this wiki page lists all the ibook models with basic specs and release dates smile

if when i can turn them on it turn out that they only have a cd drive, i'll be replacing it with a dvd drive.

i only need to get one airport card though as one of them already had one in it! biggrin

right, i'm off to look for 10.3... ubbangel

I think the cd drives are all combo dvd cd/rw drives... which should be sweet.

Hey chaps

I recall being able to make my iBook a target drive of someone else's iBook by connecting the two with a firewire to firewire cable then holding down apple T during start up on mine. It's not working though when I connect with Dave's.

I know that a firmware password witl lblock that function, but

I don't have firmware password as far as I know...that's not something that would automatically instal with a software update is it??

Or maybe I've just mashed my cable somehow by carting it around?

Clues? confused

You might need to get into target disk mode, then connect the cables. If it's showing just the disk icon it's in target disk mode.

If you can get into open firmware (Apple+O+F) then you don't have a password (just type boot to carry on booting).

Firmware updates can't be done in OSX anyway, as you need OS 9 for some reason (PITA doing it with a Japanese copy wink).

--------

A G3 should be fine running OS 10.4, so long as you stuff it with memory. My G3 clamshell (466Mhz) happily took a 512mb SODIMM (more than Apple says it can take), and with 640Mb total runs Tiger well enough. An upgrade to a faster hard drive can help too.

Polarity,

thanks for your help: open firmware password wasn't the problem: my memory was.

I just needed to hold *t* not *apple-t* whilst booting my pooter (the target drive)

All sorted and functioning perfectly now. The target drive method is brilliant, so fast for transfers (now I remember how to do it!).

My interest in computers is at the level of a pathological obsession (I own about 40, entirely as a hobby), and after 17 years of using PCs and MS operating systems, I got my hands on a G3 iBook running OSX (I'll admit OS9 and pre Blue & White powermacs are rubbish). Since then I've sunk more money into my G4 than any PC I've owned, and won't be buying PCs again.
