Hey, i've said this a dosen times to myself and my friends, i'm going to get fit. Personaly I don't like doing exercise, apart from swimming(But not liking people seeing my body puts me off). Right, question is what would be more effective to get rid of my man boobs and gut, jogging or swimming. Which one would be more rewarding, personaly I prefer swimming as I can keep swimming for almost 3 times as long as jogging. But I feel more physicaly drained and tired from jogging then swimming.
Can anyone give me some advice, if i decide to take up swimming i'd go about 3 times a week for 90minute sessions at a time(i've found the perfect times which means I don't waste my 3 hour breaks in between college lessons at the coffee shop). I'd most likely be swimming with a friend of mine who's getting fit for the RAF.

The only reason i'm scared of little kid's is because I know in ten year's time they'll be mugging me.....

Swimming would be the best for man boobs - especially breast stroke. I suppose you could always call it man boob stroke ubblol

The resistance you get from the water when swimming is very good. What about something like water aerobics as well? that would be very good as it uses the resistance of the water as a positive. plus you said you've got a friend who will come with you. This is very important especially if you spur each other on to keep going.

I would say swimming too for the upper body but if you want to work out that tummy you will need to add in a bit more than just that...maybe doing some sit up (stomach crunches) in your bedroom at night before you go to bed as well....

I seriously have to get fit, i'm fed up of feeling this bad about myself, time to make a change, i've had this pair of 36" baggies that i've not been able to wear in ages(i'm 39"). I miss my baggies. Me and one of my mates (Craig) also take digs at each other(Me "Emo kid", Craig "Fat [censored]"). These comments don't really effect me, just Craig doesn't have to work to get thin(He's got like a 26" waist, not kidding). He has a OOber high matabalism. But if i can get thin, then i'll be impressed with myself as I would have to Really have to work for it,.

you need a workout that will burn fat. you need to get "puffed out". you need to raise your heartrate. Is there anything you would do that's slightly more intesive?

What about cycling or circuit training as an alternative to jogging?

Weights alone won't do much you need the aerobic exercise.

jogging, cycling and an aerobic element to your other exercise (e.g. sprint on the spot for 2 minutes, do some sit ups, sprint on the spot for another 2 minutes, do rest of situps) would be good to lose the weight.

i'd cut out the lifting until you have lost some weight first - otherwise you will find that you put on muscle under the fat and you will in all likelihood get bigger for a while!

swimming rocks because it is aerobic and also works at giving you a toned muscle base smile

i know a bloke that got a figure like this just through swimming eek kiss wink

theyre both really good for toning up. start with jogging to get in shape a bit, then start swimming, if your uncomfortable with people seeing you. or just swim, and dont worry about it.

If you really want to get a better wasit line you will also have to watch what you eat and drink....it's all well and good going about exercising but if you are then going out and eating rubbish or going to the pub for a couple of pints it isn't going to be very effective....

(Not saying you do that) *disclaimer*

One of the best ways to lose weight is to watch the diet.

I put on a fair bit of weight before I left Australia, since being in London I make sure I walk a lot and always take the stairs instead of the escalators (or walk up the excalators instead of standing still on them) but I eat really healthy as well and that alone has helped me shed a number of kilos.

I don't eat amazing amounts of junk food, I usualy have a tuna and salad bauguette for lunch. I next to never drink fizzy drinks(2 cans a week maximum).I do have about 5-8 cups of tea a day(only 1 sugar in each though). The tea is proberly the most unhealthy thing I have on a daily basis. I don't drink that much beer, (infact last night I had 2 cans and that's the only beer I had in the last 3 months). I go through maybe half a bottle of whiskey in a week or two. I don't eat pub meals or go to pubs for drinks. Don't smoke.
Erm. I usualy eat something like chicken kieves and rice, pizza, soups and bread, I love melon, i eat a lot of melon. Thats usualy what I eat when i'm in my home, but it's not that often I eat at home. I don't eat sweets or chocolate ever(for the main reason that it really really hurts me teeth). I'm in work 3 nights a week where I may have a small bowl of chips while i'm there.

I want to get back into baking my own rock cakes and stuff, those are usualy pretty healthy the way I make them, and they fill ya up really easily.

My boss lost over 60 lbs by swimming 3 times a week and changing his diet, so I'd say doing both of those could work for you. By changing his diet, he gave up chips, cokes, and several other things. One thing he does to maintain the weight loss is to not eat bread - that's why the pizza might not be a good thing. Not the toppings on it, but the sheer amount of bread content in it. Opting for things with high protein content instead of things with calories and not much nutrition value (i.e. the bread).

Advise for diets is to stick to the healthy food pyramid...don't cut things out of your diet completely (like breads, oils even, meats) as that is actually bad for you...

If you stick to the healthy food pyramid and don't eat anything in excess (no matter what it is) then you will be fine diet wise and add the exercise of swimming and whatever you do at home (crunches etc) then you will start to see the changes.

Personally I'd stick to the weights as they should aid in achieving your goal, which isn't to lose weight, but to lose fat and make your waist smaller.

Muscle weighs more than fat, which is why assessing progress with weighing scales can be a bad idea (it's possible to gain weight while actually losing fat, if you're also putting on muscle).

Fortunately, a kilo of muscle needs more energy to sustain it than a kilo of fat- so having more muscle helps with your metabolism and burns some of the calories that would otherwise go towards increasing your body fat (that's the theory anyway).

When it comes to exercise, the main factor isn't necessarily whether it burns the most calories, but whether you're going to keep it up.

So enjoyment is a big factor and, from the sound of your post, it would seem that swimming is more to your liking than jogging.

There's one thing I'm confused about though- you say you don't overeat and than your diet is healthy, but this seems inconsistent with having a 39" waist.

Whatever your metabolism, it's unlikely that you could have a 39" waist if your diet is fine.

You can get bigger even if you eat healthy by having a slow metabolism and not exercising....

That is why sometimes diet is simply enough...also some medication can make you gain weight....

Of course metabolisms differ, but, ultimately, fat (and muscle) require calories to both create and sustain them.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't that mean that, for the body to be creating/maintaining fat, there must be an excess of calories over and above that needed to sustain the body?

If we think of those horrible photos of holocaust camps were, without exception, all the victims were skeletal; regardless of metabolism, the lack of food led to an absense of bodyfat in all the victims.

Obviously, that's in extreme circumstances, were food levels were way below those found in any weight-loss diet; but the point I'm making (and like I said, correct me if I'm missing something here) is that, fat requires an excess of food over and above the level that would be required to sustain ones body if one were not carrying excess fat?

That is correct but you can not say that is a given for each person...there may be exteniuating circumstances that we are not aware of here...such as medications.

The medication I take make a few people put on weight (I am lucky it has no effect like that one me), women can put on weight b y taking the pill, and there are other things that can also have that effect.

There may also be a health condition that makes people put on weight.

So you are correct in Some instances but not all.

My husband lost weight, his chronic back ache and gained alot of energy by swapping his cups of tea for water. It is difficult at first, but once you are out of the habit of drinking tea, (we both find) you don't miss it.

Small changes can make a big difference. Good luck with it- I hope you can start to feel better about yourself soon, regardless of whether you change your body shape hug

I know that if you actually eat like 5 or 6 times a day (healthy food;smaller portions) it's better for you b/c it speeds up your metabolism. I've been trying to loose weight and am eating a lot of tuna, chicken, fresh vegetables steamed. Oh and salsa isn't bad for you. And you can still have like a potato or bread or something like that with your dinner. Also protein shakes help b/c they are good for you and they fill you up. And of course still doing your swimming. Hope this helps I'm trying to loose weight too, so we'll do it together I'm at 138lb's right now and I'm trying to get back down to 120, I'll check back in and we'll compare:)

When you're already walking on thin ice...why not dance?

The swimming three times a week would be a great start. Then try to find something to do on the other days.Fitness and weight loss will work a lot better with 5 days a week than 3.
Try to include some weight bearing exercise walking/running.
Spinning with heavy poi would count too
Do a food diary for a week where you write down everything you eat and drink and analyse or have someone who really knows about nutrition look at it.
chicken kiev is basically chicken with lots of butter not good.
doesnt seem to be much in the way of vegetables in your diet.
I had to take a good hard look at myself in january last year when I turned 50. Now 14 months down the track I am down from 91.5 Kg to 78Kgs.
Five days a week I do this
get up and do 30 minutes dancing
cup of black coffee
go to gym for
-20 minutes running on treadmill
-15 minutes poi practice
-20 minutes weights
go home and have breakfast
I eat a bit less and cut out the junk but do not go hungry so it can be done.

I work for a weight loss and eating disorder clinic.

Do weights...absolutely!!! The build lean muscle, which increases your metabolism.

Here's the question, do you want to be thin or do you want to be healthy? Keep in mind that thin is not always healthy.

Do not deprive yourself of anything, instead have it in moderation. Pizza is fine, have one slice 1 time per week. Coke is fine, have no more than 24oz. Focus more on veggies, fruits and lean protiens...in that order.
Watch your sodium...it causes people to take on more water than the Titanic.

Don't just start off with jogging. Walk fast first, for 10 min then increase time and speed till you get to the point where you can jog. Wear some music and be off. Slowly building up is better for your body, your heart and you will be mentally in a place to stick with it. Most people who just jump in don't stick with it because they get bored or intimidated.

Swimming is excellent. Different kicks work different muscle groups and it is wonderful for the upper body and abs.Change the stroke you do to get a more even workout.

Drink things really cold, it speeds up your metabolism (to heat the cold internally).

Eat the bulk of your foods earlier in the day including a full protien (usually between 6-8 oz) in the morning. It helps to get your metabolism up early and keep you from being ravenous the rest of the day.

Don't cut anything back either. Most people do not eat enough and that creates a grinding halt in their metabolism. You *need* to eat to lose weight, you just need to eat healthy and in the right portions.

And finally, pay attention to both the weight on the scale as well as your measurements. Often when we work out we gain weight but shrink or we lose but don't shrink. You have to look at both when guaging your success.

Best of luck and be healthy!

A mention on the weights. From personal experience I have learned that you must be cautious in how you lift. If you lift heavy weights small amounts you will put on a lot of muscle quickly while smaller weights in larger amounts will allow you to tone your muscles. I have a gut that is a small layer of fat then rock hard abs from my old workout routine. Whoops. The swimming seems like the better choice to me. Just my 2c.

just dont push yourself, remember to have time out and to treat yourself, as a lot of losing wieght is will power and you have to keep your morale up, so dont go too hard on your self. be realistic too!! and good luck...i need to pair up with someone to loose weight, all of my mates are fine with themselves or cant be arsed so im in a catch 22!!

Medussa is bang on biggrin
Losing weight is largely dependant on the foods you eat. You could visit with a dietician to find meal ideas or if you want even a set diet of what you should/should not eat, or how much you can eat of something.
While exercise is well and good, it doesn't cut it alone.

As for exercise though, I'd say walking. Walk for 2-3 hours at a time. The longer the workout, the more fat you burn. Jogging is alright if you can go for a little while at it, but keep in mind the impact of jogging could do some serious damage to your knee joints if done on the wrong surfaces or with the wrong footwear :S
It's good to get healthy, but better to stay healthy once you're there :S
No point in jogging off 5-10 inches from your waist then having to use crutches or limp because you blew out cartilage + ligaments in your knees.

I wish you the best of luck in your quest man (Y) It's always a good thing to see people try to improve them selves! I've got the reverse problem, I'm skinny as a stick, at 135lbs, and I can work out 4-5 times a week and still not gain weight ^.^'

but yea, watch what you eat, and i really enjoy walking, it clears your mind, isnt hard, yo dont need to pay to do it, theres no extra skills you need and its good for your body. plus you dont sweat and feel all uncomfortable. you can go whereever you like too, take your discman with you (yes i still have one im in the stoneage) and listen to some music you enjjoy, make it a pleasure not a chore.

I'm a big fan of team sports. I've been a bit of a fitness freak since I was a teenager, mainly because I played a lot of sport and was a state representative in many of them.

A lot of my friends go through yoyo dieting any exercise programs but they have so much difficulty sticking with it for more than a month or so. If they are interested I try to get them to join one of my sports teams and since they are accountable to the rest of the team they tend to stick with it more.

I also think it makes exercise a lot more fun when you add in a competitive element because it takes your mind off the fact that your muscles might be getting tired or sore and stops exercise from being too repetitive.

And of course it's also a great way to make new friends smile

Good luck all.
