I only watched the first five minutes - unfortunately, it's not really the kind of comedy I find funny enough to watch all of when I should have gone to bed about 4 hours ago.

If you read this, could you do me a massive favour and change the thread title to something that shows what this thread's actually about? It'll help the search engine work much better and let people find it again later. smile

But there's no sense crying over every mistake. You just keep on trying till you run out of cake.

and your point here is????????????

honestly, i always find much of american stand-up lacking. it seems every time the 'comdian' says a complete sentence everyone automatically laughs.

Ok, favor to ask (since we haven't gone over this in a while)

Please, please, please do me (and everyone) a favor and make thread titles MEANINGFUL. "Check this out" means jack squash. And squat. And squish. And squares, too... even *horrors!* squaw.

The title of this thread could have been "Check out this comedian." Makes it easier to figure out what the thread is about.

Alternatively, all threads could just be given gobeldygook names...

there is a list of about 20 different commedians all on youtube. Yes they ARE American, however I find them funny for the most part (couldn't be cuz i'm american could it? naaaaah). Don't get me wrong, I like british humor as well.

anyways, some ones to check out for sure:
Stephen Lynch
Dat Phan
Leiws Black

enjoy

Stephen Lynch is fantastic biggrin As is Pablo Fransisco (his impersonations of the movie trailer guy alone make me cry with laughter)

The UK is better for surreal comedy (Bill Bailey/Eddie Izzard etc etc) and plain sarcasm which the Americans can't seem to get. I lived with a guy from Kentucky last year and it took him about three months to get some of the running jokes that were floating about in halls especially the "Invaiding Britney with spears jokes while playing Medieval Total War and chimp rape jokes that went around for a while.

thanks for that Stephe, I for one really enjoyed it.
I'd like to say that I love American humour and UK humour but there is no comparison. Its like comparing dogs to cats, theres a world of difference between the styles and each have really funny performers and really really bad ones.

Ide like to know what english commics have followings in america? I find it hard to imagine our comics being heard of in the states but apparetnly they do. With the exception of John Cleese and Monty Python we all know those have crossed over incredably well, who else?

Sorry to say but aside from some select musicians and actors most Americans couldn't name a British celebrity or athelete. Or actually anybody British.

If you showed them a picture, I'd bet most educated Americans could name:
Tony Blair
John Cleese
Princess Diana
Prince Charles

If you showed them a picture, I'd bet most educated Americans could not name:
David Beckham
Winston Churchill
Margret Thatcher (if they're under 30)
Any Royalty aside from above
Any other Python

Hrmm... this is quickly diverging off topic...

Long story short, John Cleese is certainly the only British Comedian most Americans have ever heard of.

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

I do understand what you're saying... it took me a while to understand that most UK standup comedy has context and flow whereas part of the humor of some US comics are the lack of context.

Many American Comics like Stephen Wright, Mitch Hedburg and even old guys like Rodney Dangerfield all have 'one liners' as a mainstay of their comedy.

In contrast, not many American comics use 'storytelling' like most of the UK guys do.

I think that Quintessential American Comedian "Jay Leno" is a master of the technical joke. Don't get confused, he's not one of my favorites, but he is absolutely clinical in his "Setup, Joke, Laugh" sequence. The guy is a workaholic and you can tell. He's probably got more hours of logged technical standup than any American in history. He's on every night at 11 and is the most popular American Latenight Host. (Before Americans yell at me, I don't think that Letterman or Carson are quite as technical.)

Well, shall we go?
Yes, let's go.

I know many Americans who love Brit humour. there is a BBC channel here in the states so we do have easy access to many of your shows and celebrities.....I only have time for a sort list but I know and love many more than I have time to say, heres a few comedians and shows that I absolutely love......
As I already said Eddie Izzard makes me near wet myself
Rowan Atkinson
Tony Slattery
Bill Bailey

some shows I love are:
The young ones..........its a classic!!!!!!!
Black Adder......also a classic!!!!!!
Are you being served
Who's line is it anyway........UK version

I could go on but time doesnt allow, but the moral of the story is that brit humour is know, loved, and available to many Americans.....especially me!!!!!! biggrin biggrin biggrin

Russell Peters eh......?? That's a good Indian name.....!

He was ok..... but it really annoys me that comedians from ethnic backgrounds concentrate their humour race jokes...... 90% of that guys act was "A chinese guy will do this..... and an Indian Guy will do that...."

It's a very interesting story, Future Boy....!

Not many Brits get my New York sarcasm. It's just different flavors.

One serious difference is that Brits do tend to generalize a bit more.

I agree the humour styles are very different flavors
sarcasm is one of my favorite types of humour if done right
I was told once that sarcasm is the lowest form of humour but that was by someone who just didnt get it
I think its one of the highest forms because it takes a certain level of intelligence to get it wink just like the really dry english humour does
