Posted:I'm a light hearted guy, and i can have alot. I can respect people for whatever skills the posess. Graffiti artist, cool, make a nice drawing, and I'll stand right beside you. But just shamelessly defacing someones home, with nothing but racist slur and your in my bad books.

Essentially this happened to me, my home being my website. Shamelessly defaced, is just that. As some of you may know, I've got a website on poi and juggling in general. It's just a hobby, free for all to view, no ads, no strings, no forced logins, nothing. Just as it is, take it or leave it.

In that website, i have a forum, where a few of my friends and i chat alittle, discuss meets and future plans for videos and what ever else we can think of. Two weeks ago it was hacked. Fair enough, first time it happened to me. Quite annoying, but i had a back up, an old one, but none the less i got it working again. I lost alot of stuff, but i cut my loses and continued. Yesterday, I got hacked again, but this time they did enough damage to cripple my forum again. Had to install a new version, did'nt read my back up, lost everything.

Now comes the rant. To all you kiddies who wanna be just like the guy in hackers. If you have to stretch your proverbial wings, then hack something difficult. Manipulating a tiny bit of php just because you can is not cool. It's not even your own work, I guess you typed in how to hack into google and then stood on the shoulders of others. If you must hack, I'm not saying you should, but if you must, then please go for porn sites or rasicm sites or something. Firstly, it might present a challenge for you and secondly it could even be considered positive. I've lost the whole day, trying to restore my forum, and then getting a new one up and running. Thats it, thats all you achieved. My faith in humanity has taken a blow as well, but whatever, that'll bounce back.

Anyway, thats my angry rant, sorry. But I'm so highly strung at the moment I need some kindof outlet. Please, aspiring hackers, please, be reponsible with your skills. It's great that you can develop such an understanding of programming that you can manipulate it from outside. There is soo much bad stuff on the internet, evil stuff even, destroy that, not just some hippies homepage. If you need notches on your belt, try and earn good ones.

Silver lined clouds, it's been a learning experience, I'm a little wiser to the workings of it all now.

Moral of the story - To all of you fresh blood to web design, like me. Dont think that it wont happen to you, random attacks. I thought who in there right mind would bother to have a go at me and i got sloppy with back ups. If you have a forum, and you hav'nt backed up your data base in a few weeks, go forth and do it now. Dont let the security updates slide.

Hackers are petty people (usually skinny nerds who trhink the world owes them something) who are too runtish to go and pick a fight on the street so they hide behind their computer and destroy things.

A hacker would only enter a site to expand their own knowledge, they would cover up their tracks and leave no trace that they were there. Hackers are generally just programmers expanding there knowledge in other ways that just learning code.
True hackers have been given such bad names by the media and other so called hackers (crackers, skiddies).
If you want to know more check out, www.sourceforge.org this is a 'home' for many hackers that share ideas/programs/code.

Otherwise you will get clumped together with "disillusioned adolescents".

And to be honest, I would say it is a script kiddie, and not a cracker.

"These people are normally power hungry adolescent males."
Once again, I would think this was done mainly by (not saying you but peoplelike you) 16 year old males who are trying to make themselves feel cool and show the world how 'dangerous, wild and individual' they are.

Trust, Ive been there... wink

If I had a pic hosted on my server I'd have the IP number of everyone who looked at it. And you can get the name of someones ISP from the IP, and then send mail to abuse@their.isp. And they get their account terminated, which will not please the parents who payed for it.

hug Mot - good to hear that you're back online and kicking!

It seems to be in fashion these days...

After years of receiving hopeless virusmails from funny people (which get deleted by my provider anyways - so I was safe) some funny censored uses my email adress to send viruses to people of my adressbook.. eek

S/he even used my headers (not the usual: re. your application, data, bank accountcrap)... frown Very nicely done! Those have not been sent from my account, that much is sure and were likely to have contained some spy/derware...

This funny being is not just ruining my credibility - it's strongly annoying me... frown

I close shoulders with Mot: Girls and guys - if you really have to hack and check other peoples bank account statements or private informations: why not trying something challenging? Try BofA or G.W.B. accounts? umm Or maybe you don't have the skills and guts, so you have to pick on the average joe... umm wink

I'm not so much convinced that it's "power hungry...."
I guess they are not much thinking about what they do, or do just for the thrill and to proove that they CAN.

Unfortunately there seems to be no ethics code in those pirate-communities (anymore) shrug

not if they are using an anonymous proxy, or using a compromised pc as a proxy.

hacking a network is illegal full stop. if you dont ppl to come into your bedroom you wouldnt leave the doors to your house unlocked would you?

Similarly I walk about the streets as a vulnerable unarmed female, but am not,by that, inviting assault. I do understand that the internet/pooter world is much more full of nasty types than my suburban street. But in either case, leaving the 'door unlocked' does not imply a desire for cyber/spacial rape.

to be honest gabe your house is an exception to pretty much every rule which is an awesome thing. i agree that an open door is not an invition to enter, breaking the law is breaking the law.

the level of cyber crime on the net is astounding (i recieve at least 4 emails a week from people trying to steal my bank details) http://www.zone-h.org/en/defacements/special
is one site of defaced sites lists which only list big sites. its the admins job to make sure holes are patched firewalls running etc etc to close all the doors to stop ppl getting in.

your not afraid of someone entering your house who isnt ment to be there hence the open door. if there was a reason for you to be afraid of someone entering your house (ie home invansion was happening on a regular basis in your community) surely you would be much more inclined to not leave your front door open when no ones home??
