Bolas were used for hunting deer. It has two or three "wick" and the horse rider swing them around head and throw agains the prey.

They tangle around legs and tend animal to stop running and drop
down. Most of them were made from leather and stones.

Original [Old link].

I were playing with the when I was little hunting my brother smile,

Doesn't sound like traditional Bolas (three piece projectiles) to me.. here's more info on what I think is being talked about:

https://www.cirquedusoleil.com/CirqueDuSoleil/en/showstickets/saltimbanco/acts/boleadoras.htm

not much info tho... I've never seen it m'self.

Definition of poi- A Hawaiian food made from the tuber of the taro that is cooked, pounded to a paste, and fermented.

Yeah, ive seen this performance, its a kinda gypsey thing, they wack the balls off the floor and stap thier feet in rythum to a drummer, I think it features in a CdS show. I saw it on telly once.

construction wise they are about 4 1/2 feete long with a wooden ball on the end. They dont do anything specialy spinning wise but they do go pretty fast and keep excelent rythum, a rythum that gets quite complex when they add the stomping.

From your description, it sounds like these are original, traditional Maori poi, not necessarily bolas.

Poi reffre to traditional Maori prop, bola to south american Gauchos. But as time pass there come several new types, like flags and the rhyming thing that is for sure neither Poi like nor Bola.
Still I dont know where is its origin.
