Would any of you consider Poi as a candidate for an olympic sport? It's already very international, very physical, requires much skill and training, and is known all over the world and practiced as an art.
For those who consider Poi as a dance, not a sport, what would you consider choreographed ice skating to be? Would any of you support the idea of poi in the olympics?
Why or why not?

because there has been interest for some time amongst some jugglers about getting 'sport juggling' into the olympics.
I think it would be either/or (poi or juggling) and, if so, juggling is, IMO, far more likely, due to the fact that much of the organisation/infrastructure is in place and well established.
My own personal feelings are that I don't care
for me, much of the beauty of poi/juggling/similar skills is precisely the fact that they aren't sports (with all that goes along with being a sport) and provide an alternative to those who wish to progress in a skill but who feel excluded from traditional sports. "You can't outrun Death forever.

'Olympics' on its own will turn up every thread that has the word 'olympics' in it, many of which will be irrelevant.
My use of +poi +olympics narrowed it to threads which contained both 'poi' and 'olympics'
Another option is to use the phrase-
"poi in the olympics"
enclosing it with speech marks means the search engine lists only those pages with the specific phrase; this is a very powerful way of narrowing down the results and often results in missing out on pages that may be relevant yet which don't include the full phrase.
Using "poi in the olympics" in the search yielded 3 pages, one of which was this page itself

I think I'm just now realizing how broad and extensive these forums are, never would have thought I needed to type in more than one word in the search to find what I'm looking for.

It's interesting. Some might argue that figure skating, diving, and gymnastics are more akin to dance than sport. Yes, they require great athleticism, but for some reason they are defined as "sports" when equally athletically demanding feats are defined as "art" or "performance art" such as dance, or object manipulation in general.
How would we grade a poi spinner? What would be the rules?

I would HATE poi to be in the Olympics.
nationalism, competitiveness, rankings and trickery and tension and sponsorships and commercialism and corruption and elitism and all the rest of it. YUCK POO let there be something sweet and beautiful and community without grubby paws all over it.

Its interesting to note that in a survey of disciplines, the second most demanding was ballet, after football. As for the sports you mentioned, while yes they are performative, they are more about manipulating one's body, as opposed to objects

This thread reminds me of [Old link] thread about the Future of poi and going on it talks about poi in the olympics.
Poi is getting more and more mainstream and im sure this summer lots more people will be into it, in the meantime i doubt ti will be anymore of an olympic sport than ballroom dancing is

Hmmmmm from memory the Sydney Olympics had some rad spinners in the opening.. as well as an ocean of indigenous women, massed a cappella tap dancers (how the hell did they do that? earphone click tracks?) and giant spinning ikebana arrangements.. it were purty and the best thing I ever saw at an Olympics apart from those stunning boy skater the other night...the Japanese lad in the velvet jumpsuit.. and the USA lad who did a Swan Lake routine with silver feathers...
who got introduced as the 'Oscar Wilde of ice dancing' Pretty cute seeing Oscar was like 8 foot tall and hardly delicate... I think they just meant he was gay... .....Can't juggle balls but I sure as hell can juggle details....

I always see object manipulation as a community-based thing. To put it into the public spere of medals etc would be good for publicity, but really really bad for the art, I think.

Quite the chap who won the icedancing got amazing marks but it was horrid to watch.. out of relation to the music, jerky, looked strained...blah blah. The other chaps were I saw were lovely, made me happy to see their joy in movement... but there weren't marks for that.

to much compitetion in the olimpics.. i never watch them for that reason.. if poi was in it tho.. they should have the "everyone is a winner" rule were you get a metal just for trying OOOOooOOO!!! or a gold STAR!!!!
