Posted: Thursday 24 February 2006. Synergy Film and Food night - The Kalahari Bushmen
Join us at the Synergy Centre this Thursday February 24th for Kalahari night, part of the buildup to the Kalahari Bushmen benefit night this Friday at the Mass, in Brixton (see www.tribalvibrations.net). Amongst the films on offer will be The Great Dance, a film about the Kalahari Desert Bushmen and their relationship to the landscape in which they live. This fascinating documentary, which has been made available to The Synergy Centre courtesy of Survival International, has taken film festivals around the world by storm (see below for synopsis). We also hope to be showing “The Gods Must be Crazy”, a South African film about the misery brought to a small group of Sho in the Kalahari desert in the form of a cola bottle. In his quest to throw the evil object over the edge of the earth, Xixo encounters Western "civilization," a haphazard doctor and a tyranical despot. If Joe can't find this in the chaos of his bedroom, then the alternative will be "Rabbit Proof Fence" - similar except in Australia and centred around the Aborigines. Additionally, we will be screening The Motorcycle Diaries, a film based on the journals of Che Guevara as he and Alberto Granado ride around South America on a journey of self-discovery.
The Sattva Cafe will be serving delicious, healthy vegan meals from 7pm, and there will also be tea, cake and snacks available the whole night. Entry is by donation, with all proceeds going towards the centre’s ongoing renovation fund. Please donate generously! The Synergy Centre is located at: 220 Farmers Road, London SE5 which is off Wyndham Road, which is off Camberwell New Road, London SE5.

"The Great Dance” is a fascinating documentary that examines the unique relationship between Kalahari Desert Bushmen, or the San people, and the harsh landscape of the Kalahari Desert in Southern Africa.
Filmed through the eyes of !Nqate, a hunter and one of the Kalahari Desert bushmen, “The Great Dance” follows the life of !Nqate as a hunter and tracker. It’s a raw and poignant story of !Nqate’s survival, as told in his own words.
A collaboration between Dutch and South African filmmakers, the film is a 35mm feature-length documentary directed by South African brothers Craig and Damon Foster, produced by Ellen Windemuth and written by Jeremy Evans. Its use of specially-adapted mini-cam technology and never-before-seen footage of the death-defying 'chasing hunt' for which Kalahari Desert Bushmen are famous for, makes this a unique and remarkable cinematic experience.
“The Great Dance” has been the recipient of many film awards worldwide, including awards at the Wildscreen Film Festival in the UK, and at other international film festivals in Canada, the US and Europe. “The Great Dance” is also available on DVD.
This is a film dedicated to the ancient !Xo San people, whose harmony with this vast Kalahari desert landscape inspired the movie. Use this site to learn more about the movie and the !Xo San - the Kalahari Desert Bushmen - or to travel into their minds, hearts and landscapes through the unique images. Thursday 24 February 2006.
