I think the general deal is that if everyone were allowed to have avatars, it would slow the site down way too much.

I'd love one. But if it means that each page is going to take three minutes to load, then that's not really worth it.

And think of the poor blokes who are stuck in the stone age on 56K modems! Oh, the humanity!
