Heya,

I have two friends that are getting married this coming Saturday. There's will be a non-traditional wedding, incorporating a circle of friends, heart attunement & blessing circle. Part of the ceremony has 3 people (of which I am one) offering the couple a gift... something symbolic, along with a small speech explaining the gift.

I need suggestions!

One of us is givng them a mirror, so they can see the truth reflected in each other and themselves.

I would like to offer them abundance, so that they may receive & cherish all they desire.

I think that's what I'd like to offer them... am open to suggestions though.

Ade - where are you? This is your area of expertise!

Yeah - maybe. Or, to represent virility, I could chop your boys off and present them to my friends on a platter...?

Heh, I think FF is getting annoyed at the lack of serious suggestions...

Guess it should have been put in Help! or something. rolleyes

A sword, to symbolise the willingness to defend each other from harm? Although maybe a weapon isn't what you want at a wedding. shrug

A mini fountain/waterfall thing to go in their lounge? The water symbolising clarity, life and (maybe) change. You can get some really nice small fountains that are like a foot high. Also is really relaxing to have in the room.

After much consideration, I find that the view is worth the asphyxiation.

Not sure how practical this is, but it's a chinese tradition/supersition/myth/symbol that eating a really really long strand of noodle (imagine a large bowl of noodles that is actually just one strand) is ment to mean a long life (longer the noodle = longer the life or something like that)

for the life of me i can't quite remember what those noodles are called... and i'm supposed to be chinese too redface

What about seeds, flowers/vegetable/whatever. I know lots of people give seeds away as wedding favors.
They symbolize the commitment to care for each other so that they can "grow" together.
It could also tie into the abundance theme... shrug

I smile because I have no idea what is going on...

simian suggested covering them in honey and releasing killer bees to represent the hardships and challenges they will have in life together.

Blayze, I thought seeds too for lots of reasons, especially herb or fruit or veggies ones.

This is why...

If you take something small and nurture it, it will grow and as it grows, it brings a light, a warmth, a joy to the world. To nuture something to the point where you receive the gift of abundance from it takes time, commitment and patience, something all too often overlooked in this day and age. So while we slow down to take the time to care for it, we also slow down and appreciate each small amount it has grown along the way, thus appreciating the journey and not necessarily the end result.

For me seeds offer the capability of nuturing commitment, patience and the time to appreciate the small things in life and the ability to one day reap the rewards of the abundance they offer when they have been properly cared for.
Much of what a marriage should have in it as well I think.

I also think that if you do give a fruit tree it should be apple. The whole thing of you passing an apple on a sacred (to them) day is too funny to me! wink

the traditional symbol for this sort of blessing is wheat - a sheaf of wheat - to symbolise the planting of the grain in spring, the growth of the season in summer and the sacrifice required at lughnasadh (the first harvest).

It is a symbol of the wheel of the year as they travel together, may they never hunger, may they never thirst.

Well, the wedding happened last Saturday and it was lovely!

Thanks everyone for your suggestions.... I was on the hunt for a sheaf of wheat for a week, to no avail. Then, after having been told that barley would be an acceptable alternative, went shopping for a nice pewter bowl to offer it in. Whilst in a groovy shop, I was struck with inspiration and ended up getting them a small djembe drum instead! During the ceremony, 3 of us offered our blessings/gifts along with some verse to explain it.

My verse:

Please accept this gift of a drum
Primal, Ancient, Tribal

With its rhythmic beat
May your bodies connect
And
May your Spirits unite
in Love

Dance together on your shared Path.
