Ok, the problem:

My name is not actually Sym_ as some of you may think, it's Sym.

However, HoP seems to think that a Sym is already signed up so I can't change my name to it. Looking at the user list I see there is no Sym.

So, I though that UBB might only look at a-z and 0-9 and strip anything else (like the _), so I changed it to "somethingelse" and then tried to change it back, but no luck stull.

Can anyone help?

hug

Thanks

But I also have a userrname problem.

When I first joined HoP my name was x_aimee_x and about a year ago I changed it to *Aimée*. Now I want to get rid of the stars and -

You can only have alphanumeric characters in your display name. Special characters are not allowed because this allows users to spoof other display names. You may use the _ character to represent a space.

I'd just like to take this opportunity to say that I like my underscores. And, for what it's worth, I like Sym's one too. And I think Aimee's is fine as it is.

erm, yes

you are probalbly talking about a short while ago when it was the old boards

wit hthe update of teh site taht happened a short time ago, and possinbbly with the movmnet to the new srv for hop, it might hav eloacked certain names into place.

i think hop has a limit as to how short a nam can be, either three or four characters leng, i think its four, if you are a new member, or three if you are a very old acount, i know PK had a load of problems with his name length...

so maybe the update has locked your names in to the db as a set char value?

and wont revert back over the original user name, as it might be seen as your original sign up information in teh DB and for some reason my have become read only....

no

maybe i can think of soimethin gelse by tomorrow...

Bah, the really cool kids don't need them, or the spaces wink

Actually, I'm not sure that all members are represented on the user list.

For instance, I KNOW that one of my friends in cambridge is reged as yeahpoi, but there is no record of him in the user list, prehaps as he has never posted, only used his account to purchase fire poi?

Mech's fingers have turned into bananas. It's a sorry condition, and quite understandably he's very embarrassed about the problem. Please, let's leave Mech's banana typing alone now, poor guy.

The limit is 3 letters (according to the form), and if I changed my name to under that it would tell me that I needed to add more, not that a user with that name exists....wouldn't it?

I think Guys idea might be right, I need to find this ghost Sym and tell him that he shouldn't have taken my name in the first place. ubblol

Mech: I've had this problem for ages, before the new server. I was never on the old system, as I signed up for the first time about 18 months ago, and AFIK it's on the same UBB system (I guess it's been updated a few times, but just with patches)
