For those of you who havn't heard, check out your favourite news feed. The Bush Admin has issued a supoena (months ago now) for google's records, a list of some or all of the sites indexed and either a week or a month or some similar amount of time... all the searches entered.

Google is fighting it of course, thank god, but still its worrying... and...

The (US) news media claims google's stock is falling "because its standing up for human rights" more or less... personally I would think its fallig because people are afraid it WILL start being used for surveillence.

Anyway, I'm sure you all have thoughts/worries/opinions....

I heard this on the radio. The US government want google to provide information on the most popular searches. I'm glad that google is standing up to this. I like google. biggrin

The reason for this is that someone in the Bush administration is trying to resurrect this online anti-porn law that would be terribly restrictive.

It's pathetic, really.

It kind of reminds me of the restrictions they have in China. How all searches coming from a Chinese ISP are monitored for things like "freedom".

ooh how funny, iwas watching a programme about google the other day and it mentioned the huge amount of information that they have... stored... i kind of wonder why they even need it, but it's good that they're not giving it away...

The goal of Google.

To organise, catologue and make available to the public all the information in the world.

And to destroy all that cant be organised, catologued and publicised.

Look, dont worry about google. They are going to be the next microsoft. Pretty soon they will be unstoppable.

Wait... did i say dont worry? i mean WORRY WORRY WORRY

ubblol... google overlords.

Indeed, I think cataloguing and making available information to everyone is awesome. Its still a bit american-centric (you have no idea how hard I had to work to find lays mediterranea crisps images today....) but its a lofty goal.

And what can't be catalogued at all, if only as misc? tongue

seriously, whats your beef with them? They have issues on a personal level of course, but the coperation is still doing some pretty decent things. what are they destroying?

but what if old people dont remember anything, cause they could just store it in their short term memory, and then google it the next time they need it? only when they get old they might forget how to google, and then they will know nothing!!!!!!!!

This story is interesting, especially if you want to speculate as to google's motives.

If they are trying to portray themselves as "bad boy" countercultural rebels that want to help the little man against government control, they pretty much screwed themself by aligning themselves with Chinese communist censorship.

Actually the growth of the number of internet webpages in asia will soon far outstrip the english webpages. I forget where I read the exact figures and what they were.

So in a business sense, google is pretty smart, considering how China will soon own us all anyways...
