Filmed with: DV camera

Spinning for 2 years on/off (1 year seriously)

Props: staff (singles and doubles)

Edited: yes

Fire: no

I want feedback on my spinning: yes

I want feedback on technicalities of video making; yes

The first staff only vid I've made. Very sloppy planes in a lot of it, but I've been trying to add some character to my spinning: let me know what you think!

Lazy Contact Staff

Filmed with: digital camera

Spinning for 3 years-ish

Props: poi

Edited: not much

Fire: yes

I want feedback on my spinning: yes

I want feedback on technicalities of video making; no

personal notes:

the turning antispin same direction flowers suck, btb planes are well dodgy, as is split time butterfly turns with left hand, stalls look rubbish, timing comes and goes and not nearly enough movement:

on the other hand, some variation between 2-4petal flowers is quite nice, longarm pirouettes are pretty nice, and it was only the second time I'd played with fire in a long while (+ the second time I'd done spiral wraps) so not too bad considering

LazyAngel spinning in China

facebook vid from a mates camera phone quite entertaining commentary, quality not so bad for a phone

A result of Durbs' video challenge:

A brief documentary on the nature of poi

'Warm night, Lazy Fire' - recorded 9/6/06 this is footage from a couple of burns spliced together. No fancy angles or anything, just some footage that wasn't helped by autofocus. A bit of experimentation 'isolating' moves and with hand and arm positions at the end. Anyway I hope you like it, all feedback appreciated!

'Dirty sox and Lazy spinning pt1' - I finally got round to making a sock vid. Some of it I really like, some of it I quite like, but there's still some bits and pieces to tighten up. Visibility is a bit poor but I'm still searching for a decent location. Hope you enjoy!

25MB/5min40s

FireLazy.avi available on request

20MB/ 5mins 48secs

happened to record this the other day, so I thought, why not post it anyway.

Nothing special in there, just a fire spin with lots of things to get nice and clean (especially timing)

Also featured:

me setting my arm on fire a little bit at the start (kinda distracted me from the pendulums a bit)

pretty much invisible attempts at cheese: the spiral wraps at the end all had fingers pointing at the camera.

and one or two random experimental body movements

I like the way you were spinning behind what looked like a dead bush... ubblol

Also made me aware of some things that I need to practice...

Cheers Guy!

biggrin

One tip I can offer, Is with your Buzzsaw fountains. Move it around more, and try to get more rotations in there... You looked very stationary as you did it, try to change the level of your body as you take the circle round instead of just moving a buzzsaw from side to side... smile Or maybe what I'm trying to explain is for you to take the buzzsaw higher bofre Changing sides... shrug all this poi terminology nowadays... wink

Actually that makes a lot of sense! I actually think I need to do both those things with buzzsaw fountains. I also think I need to practise with my chains unlit a lot more, it's biased all my moves with regard to socks as I take them *everywhere*

Wiggle, wiggle...

You nearly did it... at the start.

Lots of deep stances and movement.

Then you stopped. Behind a tree (or small twig-like thing) frown

But apart from that... nice one hug

yeah I was out in Ben's back garden, we did have the lights on at the back, but he has a small patio bordered by plants (the famous twig is part of that) so I could only get so close to the light.

I think I need to get a better camera. Or a spotlight. Or maybe wear brighter clothes.....

If I ever get a socks video sorted, I promise all the light you could possibly want...

and video watched.... eek

very nice spin, and kwality soundtrack (the warm tribal feel is nicely undermined by the hat an gloves). you look like a man who's watched a lot of dervishley yers if you don't mind me saying so. wink very clean and lots of nice ideas with circles ('s what i like) and as claire says some good body movement... but as is usually the problem with fire it gets harder to see towards the end (as everyone's already reminded you)!

rolleyes

my favourite bit has to be the antispin buzzsaw flower/fountain towards the end. that looked lovely and really nice keeping it to four points (i think i usually use 6 like a normal fountain). also liked the long arm/short rm stuff about the 2min mark... do you ever use the other arm on the other side to balance it out? marks also awarded for setting yourself on fire.. comedy, danger and dediction to the cause all in one! biggrin

you should come long to this kalahari thing in a couple of weeks for a fire spin to some real african percussion.... look forward to the next one... hug

biggrin Thanks a lot dude! Yeah I have watched a lot of dervishley yers ubblove, but I think I actually get more out of nickwithfire. And also that workshop Nick did at Falmouth 4. As for thinking about the circles, well anyone I try explaining poi to usually gets an attempt at explaining the formation of pretty patterns with body movement, but it boils down 'It's all about the circles!' wink

Been sketching lots of (very basic) circle based mandala style patterns which are helping me too understand the relation between normal and antispin a bit.

I'm still working on moving the 'short' arm in the long/short stuff (trying to isolate with one arm while doing longarm with the other is a right chore) did you mean balanced more like in a flower pattern?

will look into this Kalahari thing... hug

As for vid , good performance by the bush . ..

Also liked the spinnage and jumper setting on fireness , should get your mum to patch it up for you ...

I liked the 4 beat buzzsaw was very cool, a different variation on the slower, fuller buzzsaw most people doo...

Good work , I like the long arm stuff too good work

hey Guy i love the new video! the sunset is really nice, and the tree is also lovely, way to go Nature!! Towards the end of the video, there's someone doing stretches on the right of the screen in the background, who, i'm ashamed to admit, got some of my attention through mere curiosity!
Anyway, I really like your spinning style, very zen! peace hug hope to see you this week! hug
